Low back pain is the leading cause of disability for people under the age of 45. Strengthening your lower back is the best way to prevent that. The deadlift is one of the best ways to strengthen your lower back when done correctly. I will answer the debate about whether or not the barbell deadlift or the dumbbell deadlift is best for your exercise program. I will look at the pros and cons for both the dumbbell deadlift and the barbell deadlift. We have to make a change when it comes to how we handle low back pain and it starts with strength! I have the Rogue C-70 "shorty" barbell, which is great for doing barbell exercises in my limited space basement gym. Thanks for the info.

I appreciate you posting this. I've had lower back pain for years that has been alleviated with strengthening exercises, deadlifts included. I sent this video to a friend that has chronic lower back pain, hoping he'll begin to do the same.

@@MovementProjectPT i started doing them a week ago, i've done 2 sessions of deadlifts with dumbbells so far and I always feel a horrible lower back pain after I'm done, I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing?!

At what point does a dumbbell deadlift turn into a squat? I've been slowly adding dumbbell deadlifts to my workout, and sometimes it feels like a squat. Thanks!

Much easier for DB deadlift to turn into a squat than a barbell deadlift. Great point

Bench setup including plate weights about 400-500 (12-13 years old and due for an upgrade) Pull up/dip bar 125 (lots of used options available with online marketplaces) Adjustable dumbbells 349 Slantboard 60 Monkeyfoot 85 Everlast powercore bag 250 BFR cuffs - 30 Multiple resistance bands, small weights, slam balls - 200 Probably more things I'm not thinking of

So do the dumbells still target the lower back just not as much with the barbell?

Generally speaking yes. But you can focus the work more on the LB by putting the dumbbells in front and turned to the side rather than off to the side of your foot and pointed forward.
