28-YEAR-OLD Josh, also known as 'The Tourette's Barber', was 14 years old when his life changed forever. On a ski trip with his school, he had a "minor fall" which triggered his first ever "tic attack" out of the blue. Josh told Truly: "I started convulsing, involuntary movements, I couldn't control my arms or legs... I felt scared, I felt angry at myself, I felt guilty, I felt confused." And Josh remembers how his family at the time were "just completely gobsmacked with what was actually going on... I also had family and friends asking, 'Can you not just stop?'" But it soon became clear that he couldn't and within 6 months, Josh had been formally diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome. Josh's early tics were more physical, so his future career prospects were unclear - but when he "made a big decision" to leave the family business and set himself up as a barber, Josh had no idea that would lead him to where he is today. 3 years ago, Josh set up his own barber shop and began building a loyal, local client base - then, about a year ago, his fiancée, Lucy, suggested that he record his haircuts and post them to his TikTok. Josh has now gained a huge following on social media, where he posts clips of his tics whilst cutting hair and answers questions from followers about his condition. His content receives a huge amount of love and support but has also attracted negativity: "people have accused me of faking it." But the one thing that Josh says "really gets me going" is seeing that his videos are reaching other young people coming to terms with Tourette's syndrome. Josh witnessed how much of a "toll" it took on his family in the early years and hopes to prove to others going through similar circumstances that "you can be successful with Tourette's and be a well-rounded person". With the support of Lucy, Josh's sister and fellow barber, Mia, and her partner Caolan, the success of Josh's barber shop is just the start - as he told Truly: "I'm not done yet."

I would want to take my children to his shop because firstly he seems like a decent hardworking guy that deserves support in his small business but secondly I think it’s important for my kids to see the differences in the world and a little bit of swearing really is nothing compared to teaching children kindness and compassion, my eldest is autistic and would probably love having this guy as his barber, although it’s two completely different things I think he would feel safe in an environment where he could be himself just like this guy ❤❤xx

All of you people commenting about the barber accidentally hurting clients act like that never happens with stylists that DON’T have tourettes. I’ve been burnt with curling wands on tips of the ear, singed by a flat irons, blasted by dryers that are too hot, pricked while getting sew-ins, nicked while having my neck shaved, scalp burnt with relaxers, all by different very qualified and talented stylists WITHOUT tourettes. This barber would have no more accidents than the usual stylist would, so stop being prejudiced.

I was friends with someone that had mild Tourette’s and like most things people who don’t understand or haven’t met anyone with tics can be rude and inconsiderate. He’s a top bloke and good on him for having his own business ! That’s impressive Tourette’s or not !

I feel bad for people who have tics when still in school. I know how that feels and kids can be really cruel. They know you can't help it, but they mock you anyway.

You're not alone. Many of God's beautiful souls of Light are disabled and are made stronger by the responses we get from the insensitive and the curious. We have compassion for them. If a person has not learned the merits of walking in the shoes of those who are different, it's their loss.

Well done mate, good on you. I know what it feels like to change overnight. Played guitar for 20 years and had a motorcycle accident where I caused severe spinal/nerve damage and lost the use of my left side from chest through to back including left shoulder through to fingers. Now my arm dangles unusable and I look really strange. Before that I was in the gym leg pressing 400kg etc. A big dude. Now I’m 17 months post accident and just starting to get to grips with it. I get looked at strangely as well. Just gotta crack on.

My friends with tourettes were the best because they can liven any dull moments 🤣 We used to pretend we all had it and we'd go to the mall..🤣🤣 People always assumed we were from a group home 🤣 I wish him nothing but the best,he is a good barber 💈

No one genuinely understands about tourette's unless you have tics or tourettes. You don't know what it's like to live this way I went miss diagnosed for 10 plus years. Got told all the time it was anxiety. Tics when IT WASN'T It was tourette's the entire time and at 30 I got diagnosed with tourette's when I should have been diagnosed at 25 until I Saw new specialist that knew what the hell me and my dad were talking about. They said all the evidence was clear that it was tourette's not just tics I was suffering. He really is so strong for handling his tourette's so well and people accepting including KIDS accept his tourette's and that's the most important thing people with tourette's or tics We just want to be supported and accepted like everyone else. We just have a brain function and our brain that we cannot help or control

I remember when he 1st opened his shop & I decided to give it a go... Local lad, local business & all that jazz. His opening gambit to me was to say he had "Tourettes" & would I still be comfortable going ahead with the haircut. Speaks volumes that 4 years later, you need to book him 4 weeks advance & both my boys get their hair done by him too. Forget the Tourettes, he's a bloody nice fella with a great family/team around him, a bit of a pillar of the community & wish the shop every success. My favourite Josh tourettes moment was when he'd abuse people walking by on the street & they have to pull the shop blinds down🤣 Top man !!

It'd be scary for me if I couldn't control my own body and had uncontrolled movements and verbalizations. It's bad enough that I can't control my own mood/thoughts sometimes due to my mental illness. Many Kudos to Josh for embracing his differences and starting his own business, on his own terms, and for being able to take off when he needs to. I hope he's successful and happy.

I think people misunderstand bipolar illness an think it's just a constant mood switch like every few hours 😂 or that the person is crazy an capable of murder 😒 just nuts lol hope your doing well God bless you 🙏 ❤️

The interesting thing is a person isn't born knowing curse words, so that was learned. Movements aren't learned. So I think if people in this world stop cursing in every sentence they say, people with Tourette's would never repeat them. But clearly, that is not possible.
