Man this is very true in so many aspects of life. People look at the instant price of things and not the value of things. Those are very different figures and outcomes no matter what part of life you are talking about. Value is always more important than initial cost in my opinion.

Aye thank you bro. I’m making the change from working in the shop to opening a salon suite in the next few months. What you were saying solidified me in leaving. I asked the owner for a booth rental option and was told no. Gotta make that change for myself for the future

Thank you! This is definitely something I needed to hear. I’m a barber from Guam who’s been cutting for 6 years, and I’m moving to Vegas to start all over. I’m nervous because I’m starting fresh with no clientele, but I’m so excited to see what new opportunities come my way. I hope to work for a shop owner who cares about their barbers like you do!

Bro facts all day cause most shop owners don't really care about their barbers growing it's hard to find a shop like that and when I get my shop I'll be looking for a team to grow with and when it's time they'll go out and get their own shop I love to see other people grow...👍

Great advice. I started out 50/50, but my shop owner invests in training so he adds value to his barbers. But I do feel commission should be capped at a certain point to allow a barber to truly grow is income. I do see why a shop owner who truly invests in his barbers would do commission though

Question. Where I’m having issues as a booth rent shop owner. I rent out to someone and they don’t come in and just sit like I did when I was growing. They say “I’m going home. Call me if something comes in and I’ll come back.” The last 3 I’ve brought have done that to me and as soon as I said “absolutely not! If someone who is here is available to take them, then they get first dibs.” They bounce out everytime. They have a blurred mindset between booth rent and commission. They want me to go out and get customers for them and advertise for them (which I advertise the shop frequently) as commission, but want the freedom of booth rent. I’ve been in this industry 25 years and finding people who are committed to growing is like finding a unicorn in my area!

I have a similar problem in Chicago. Booth Rent, nonchalant owners/barbers have really changed our industry. Add salon suites and everyone thinks it’s easy to to be the boss… It’s sad, but true…

You always speak sense but not always on the most obvious things but they seen obvious after you explain them. Ive worked in places where the chair rent increases every year where ive gone in and my tools have been damaged by other barbers or customers . Ive worked in places that havent changed in 30 years and when they come up against competition they dont know what to do . They say shit like “ i cant wait for fades to die out “ but never the attitude to start improving and learning and marketing . Instead they just show up and open up . Ive worked places that havent seen product on 20 years where thr customers actually complain that youve offered product . All i want is a shop where i can learn a bit more and improve my game but the example i get set is fast shitty looming cuts and bad habits . I think the type of shop owner your talking about here doesnt even exist in my town . I wish to fuck i could find somebody like yourself just to give me some guidance and shit . The thing about the 30 year barbers youre saying is so so true . To be fair though the good teams never seem to have spaces at their shops

Everyone want booth rent until they go on vacation and find out they already used their one week rent free vacation on a weekend getaway and still gotta pay rent after their actual vacation. I been found 70/30 at my shop for almost 2 years now they both definitely have their pros and cons

I wouldn't do commission long term unless I'm being paid on a w2 . I see these shops around military bases doing their people dirty 1099ing them on a bad split. When the shut downs happened they got no help because of blatant employee misclassification .

If they were set up as an s-Corp like mentioned in this video they would have a w2 and be contributing to fica therefore they would have qualified for unemployment. Unfortunately most people don’t know how to navigate these things or don’t even know they should learn how.
