In this video I go over a simple test that can be used on Ford vehicles to check for clogged EGR ports. This test is simple. First, hook up a hand held vacuum pump to the EGR valve. (The vehicle should be off and placed into park before hooking up vacuum pump.) Second, after ensuring that the vehicle is safely parked and secured, start the vehicle. Allow engine to reach operating temperature. Once the vehicle has warmed apply vacuum to the EGR valve. If the EGR ports in the intake are clear then the vehicle will most likely want to die out on you as shown in the video. If this action has little to no affect on the idle then it is likely that the ports are clogged.
Note: As mentioned in the video a faulty EGR valve can cause similar results as clogged EGR ports. Ensure that the EGR valve is in good working order before inspecting for clogged EGR ports. Also, a visual inspection of the EGR ports will be needed to confirm clogged ports.
Note: As mentioned in the video, some EGR systems, even ones equipped with a DPFE sensor may be designed differently rendering the instructions given in this video for this test useless. Please refer to your repair manual.
