Som Luong, Mark P.: Are you guys on drugs. She was 25 years too old and both Pearl Bailey and Ethel Merman sang it better. Not everything that Streisand does is “better than buttah”.

Agree- Streisand even stated later she was too young, but when she sings "Before the Parade Passes By" with such passion, you believe her!

Wow, how amazing. Her voice is so strong, ringing and resonant. Her voice is very powerful but not in a "Shirley Bassey" kind of way. Shirley Bassey always sing at full volume, that's her default setting. Barbra can be loud, soft and everything in between. She is devoid of any habits, she just adjust to what the lyrics or her inspiration demands. She can be breathy one minute and growl like a tigress the next. She never strain her voice, it looks so easy. And since she's a natural (she never took a lesson), her singing doesn't sound manufactured. It's always fresh, spontaneous, free with a certain kind of purity, innocence, vulnerability. There is a certain detachment also in her delivery, like she doesn't care if she isn't liked, contrary to someone like Lea Michele who wants you desparately to love her (even if I love Lea).

You are completely right, Barbra has a breath and vocal control like no other, even Shirley bassey, Judy garland and Whitney aren’t a match for her… Truly the queen, and the charm of Barbra is that she is one of the greatest actresses of her generation, and she mixes the singing and acting in stage perfectly… Ps: I can’t stand Lea Michele and she isn’t comparable to Barbra in any way…

I was at this show 50 years ago tonight, the night before this film was made. It was to be a TV special, but was only telecast on Ed Sullivan in this great segment. I was 16 years old. It was a memorable night. For $15, you got Barbra and a lobster dinner. I still have the program/menu. Her singing and star power were consummate perfection. I feel lucky to have been there and remember the show vividly. That same afternoon Ted Kennedy had gone on TV to try to explain Chappaquidick. To think, Barbra was just singing in Hyde Park a week or so ago. Like the song says, "She's still going strong."

Great memories, Jorvieto! Elvis would make his premiere at The International Hotel three days after, on July 31, 1969. Do you have photos of this time? (in Las Vegas, at hotel...?)
@Jorvieto
@Jorvieto 5 жыл бұрын
@@mwendler I don't have any photos, only the program. I wish I had taken pictures. The hotel was brand new. Just outside the showroom was a baccarrat table, and Bill Cosby was playing there an hour or two before Barbra's show started, placing huge bets. It was so hot in Vegas (of course). Peggy Lee was doing the lounge show. We didn't see her. The oddest thing -- when I went down to scout out where the showroom was that afternoon, a man came up to me and asked me if I was with CBS. I had no idea they were going to be taping it. Being 16, I can't have looked like a CBS staff person. Will never figure that one out. I wish we could have stayed and seen Elvis.
@mwendler

@@Jorvieto Fabulous memories! I'm trying to find internal photos of The International Hotel at that time but is very hard. I think if you tell you were of CBS staff, maybe you would have backstage access and maybe could see Barbra face to face. But I agree, with 16 years old, probably nobody would believe in you. (kkkkk) I don't have 100% certain but I think possible Elvis was in the audience at this show presented by Ed Sullivan. If yes, maybe CBS can had registered some footage of him. I have Elvis 69 menu but a special edition released in 2009. Original version is very expansive.
@Jorvieto
@Jorvieto 5 жыл бұрын
@@mwendler I haven't looked for photos of the International. Would love to see some, but I remember it very vividly. It had some wild colors. The carpet in the lobby and casino was a pattern with mainly lime green and pink. The Showroom Internationale, as they called it, was mostly turquoise, with red velvet booths and a red velvet looking stage curtain. Did you get to see Elvis there? The special edition menu sounds cool.

@@Jorvieto unfortunately I don't see Elvis in a live concert. I'm from Brazil and I was born in 75. Now, I'm researching about that period of his career between 1968 and 1970, trying to find out more informations. 1969 was a great year for him and to wrote a post I needed read about Barbra Streisand on International.

Barbra at her very best. She later started singing more softly but that trombone growl she had at the time in contrast with her crystal clear high notes just went straight to your heart. Even the nasal quality of her tone was pretty and brought perfect emotional depth to the material. Her fashion sense and presentation were absolutely beautiful here as well. She was a rebel up until the 80’s where she became a much more polished version of herself. Cannot wait for her book.

And for that she has my eternal gratitude. ,

Bae M.: She got the history wrong. Thornton Wilder wrote an adaptation of a German comedy, from the 1890’s, and called it THE MERCHANT OF YONKERS with Jane Cowl in 1938 but it failed on Broadway. He rewrote it as THE MATCHMAKER in 1955 for Ruth Gordon and it was filmed with Shirley Booth. Then the idea was to musicalize it and Ethel Merman and Nanette Fabray were the first two choices. Despite the voice, she wad 25 years too young for the role and the film flopped badly, BIG TIME.

this clip of the concert is Sublime and mind-boggling. Since it was all taped it is in Barbra's vault and i assume it was not released at the time as right after this movie and On a Clear Day Barbra had to change her image to the 1970s to stay relevant. Just think she was a legend and still in her 20's. I am certain as time moves on this entire concert will be released, Barbra, is pretty much settling down now as she heads to 82 and wants everyone to see all the incredible works she's been storing in her vault. Look how much she just gave us with The Yentl album and the restored scenes from TWWW. She is an Earth Angel.

You're right. There's a French-German documentary about her on YT now ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nr6KmKpn172qnKc.html ) containing this whole segment from "one of those cold winter nights, Horace" up to the final top note in chrystal clear sound AND resolution (ok, "chrystal clear" might be a bit exaggerated, but just a bit), starting at about 33.45. Damn, I knew it had to be out there. Hopefully she will release this at some point, it's one of her finest and most outstanding performances. I don't think Ed Sullivan made it clear that this was virtually part of Barbra's act at her current residency at the (brand new) International Hotel in Vegas (July 2-Aug15 1969). Critics ripped the opening night to shreds claiming Barbra didn't even acknowledge the audience because she felt they were hostile, so she reportedly sang to the orchestra with her back to the audience most of the 55 mins.. But the second night went better and by the time this was filmed, Barbra had the act down pat and was clearly enjoying herself. She was paid over a $1 million dollars, the highest in Vegas' history at the time. Tickets were $15 dollars!

We hit it off right away and she invited me to live with her that next summer in Martha's Vineyard for 3 months. I did. We smoked pot - drank green tea and went yard sailing everyday - laughing our asses off. It was very HAROLD AND MAUDE without the sex. She was sexy thought in a way - very spunky at 94 with alot left in the tank. Then I met Barbra in Hollywood 3 months later.
