You should react to her singing the Yentl medley of that same concert. Highlight of the concert where she's singing with herself ! Amazing !!

Definitely a big big song! I real 'get to you' song! On the radio a lot back in the day! Why can't they write songs like that anymore? I think they can! Thanks Dani!

Stage fright kept her away from the concert stage for 27 years. This is from her return tour "The Concert". I was there the very first night, New Years of '94 at the MGM Grande in Las Vegas. It was something. All of Vegas was consumed. It was said Vegas had not seen anything like it since Elvis's return in 1969.

What a great song! Glad to see you back doing Barbra... it's been awhile. Did yoy see the movie of the same name? That last scene in the video behind her, the one with Robert Redford, is a scene from the movie... when she unexpectedly runs into him several years after they graduated from college; she fell in love with him back then in college, but he never knew it. The movie is great. By the way, the songs composer, Marvin Hamlisch, is standing behind Barbra conducting her orchestra... you see her glance back at him as the song is beginning. What makes Barbra stand out over most singers is that she's always in the moment. She's sung this song over the years dozens and dozens of times, and no two are ever the same. Those subtle nuance changes you hear are probably being evoked from a different moment in her current life at the time of the performance. That's how she elicits so much emotion from her listeners. As she says, "What comes from the heart, goes to the heart." This 1996 concert was actually her return to live paid concert performing after nearly a 27-year hiatus, except for some fundraisers here and there, and short hotel stints back in the early 70s. There's a song from this concert I'd also love for you to react to..."Somewhere"... Thanks for bringing Barbra back, and look forward to your version when it's done.

Plus just slightly over two years previous to this, she had done an interview with Mike Wallace on 60 Minutes where he point blank said to her, "Your singing voice is a gift from God!" Barbra took a moment to respond, replying "I think that's true," in a tone which didn't imply to me that she thinks she is the greatest singer to ever live, but that it was a talent which she was born with. Mike followed with, "But you won't sing live anymore, why?" And she replied: "It's not audiences as a whole, and it's not critics as a whole, but you know that there's a certain percentage of both that is just waiting there so that they can say, "Ah, see, she's not as good as she used to be." So it took a lot of guts for her to go out on that stage, and Marvin Hamlisch going to her and offering to work with her on the concerts was a big part of why she agreed to do it. Mike Wallace, as was his style, was very combative in his interview with her and, years later, when he and Diane Sawyer were preparing to watch it while doing a retrospective of his interviews over the years, she asked him about it. Mike maintained that you had to be tough and abrasive if you didn't want her running roughshod over you and that when he first met her, when she was just 19 years she old, he knew that she was 'already a diva'. After a moment's reflection, he added: "Of course, I also knew, within a few moments of sitting by this 19 year old and hearing her sing only accompanied by a piano, that I was sitting in the presence of one of the greatest singers that has ever lived." So he and Streisand had an interesting relationship, LOL.

You need to hear Lara Fabians live performance of Barbara Streisand's songs Papa Can You Hear Me and A Piece Of Sky (also known as the Yentl Medley) both done in the same performance. You won't be disappointed. Barbara once said to Lara after hearing her perform "you're very good and I don't say that to very many people".

The orchestra starts out by playing "Memory" (from Cats), which is another stellar performance by Babs. "Somewhere" (from West Side Story) is another one she absolutely kills. You need to check out both of them.

I've loved Barbara Streisand's music since hearing her song People on the radio when I was in high school in the mid 60s. I even went and bought the album People. What an extraordinary talented and gifted singer! Enjoyed your reaction Dani!

Andy, I hope you make it to the Met. I was reviewing it in my opera study book. It's a big and important opera.Where I am ,the opera house has a 40min review before the show and the lyrics are typed in English well above the stage. Probably the same and better in NY.Thanks for your help on Live Stream.
