The same applies in this case: the helmets are engineered to absorve the impact on both sides, so neither the one wearing it and the one receiving the impact get hurt. And talking abot laws of physics... Energy equals mass times velocity squared (E=½mv²). But, as velocity hits a peak and doesn't grow more due to air friction, and child are pretty light, the Energy to which they get at the bottom is actually LESS than the Energy of the adults in the middle floors when falling! This makes it easier to the ones below to catch them. In addition, yes, a mass of trained people who blend over when anyone falls is softer than impacting the floor. It's like water: it can be hard to impact it if you don't know what you're doing, but if you do, then it is softer.

The lower level of the tower is a lot wider than the rest. It is called the "pinya" (in English, the "pineapple", as when looked from above it resembles that fruit). This level of the tower exists both to provide structural support and to soften the possible falls, which by the way are really rare :)

@@dominohades 97% of the "castells" are finished without any fall. Even more, when there's a fall, the people at the bottom, the "pinya", absorve up to 60% of the impact. The helmets that children wear were specially engineered in Catalan universities to avoid injuries both for the ones wearing it and to the ones recieving the impact. I'm not saying there are 0 injuries, as with any sport, some people might get hurt. But taking into account that more children in Catalonia get serious injuries due to afterschool football than to castells... You can make an idea of its safety! :)

Entrenan años para lograr hacer esto. Individualmente, y en grupo. Solamente los más hábiles y los mejores, o sea el élite, participan en las posiciones más importantes en las torres más altas. Esto no es algo que se monta de voluntarios de la calle precisamente.

Actually only 3% of the castles end up with a fall. That doesn't even mean they fall with the children on top, maybe they fall when they're at the 3rd level. Additionally, there are lots of protection mesures and those people are trained professionals :)
