My plan was to meet up with you but this summer i sailed all the way down to Bornholm and that took me 6 weeks :D Very interesting to hear your experience from charter out the boat. Very nice video! Everybody who thinks about chartering his boat should hear, what you tell. When I talk about expenses for keeping our boat, people always ask, why not to charter it? And always, I tell about my cocerns. And you are the proof that I was always right. Do not buy a boat when you can't pay for it. Maybe think a class smaller. I appreciate your honesty so you help people to avoid an unpleasant adventure. Btw. I had a similar damage when we grounded our 345. Damage was not so severe like yours, but repairing was quite the same effort and insane expensive. Fair winds Thomas

Although we don’t want to charter our boat , that was a great insight on what to expect . I have to say that we have chartered a few times but always have taken care of the boat , but I think you are right ,it’s younger people that tend to use it as a place to stay while cruising , also even as an owner sometimes things happen the same as if it was chartered and accidents can happen. Hi Tanja and Chris Great series of videos from heart breaking to heart warming. Chartering really is not for you if you love your ship as part of your family as you two clearly do. I think the relief is visible that you are now not chartering Aurora ! An important aspect of chartering is the registration as a commercial vessel for chartering and all that entails to keep that maintained too depending which jurisdiction you operate from. Another consideration is that after several years of chartering your ship will have many more engine hours, rig and other components more used so its resale value will be less. Fair wear and tear unfortunately means the odd knock or scratch happens and is almost unavoidable. You cannot deduct for fair wear and tear as you found and maybe after 2 or 3 charters you would see these as accumulated “damages”. We chose to own and not charter because why would you want to go to your boat that was then effectively a charter boat. You may as well not own a boat and just charter one. Not withstanding all the faff of removing personal gear, storage, check-in and check-out. As some say, it may be better have a smaller boat than run the risk and hassle of chartering. Or you own the boat as a business and not as part of the family. I think that would be easier if you had multiple boats for charter and ran it as a proper business so would be less attached. Could not have asked for a more clearer and honest break down of the charter business. Thank you for that. For me - it is important to make a distinction - seeing the Charter Business as a business and recognising it is a business and having no emotional attachment per se. It's a tough one. Because, you love and cherish your boat and others are there to have fun and the reality is - not care for it as you would.

Great to see you back! I look further to new episodes. If I may add another perspective to the Charter issue, I would say that if someone is considering to buy a USED yacht, then I believe he would be better off by buying it new and putting it in the charter business for a fixed period eg 5 years because: - You control the maintenance works and are fully aware of any problems as they arise - You can take advantage of the new yacht with your friends &family especially off-season - If this is your first yacht, you can take advantage of the network and experience (and maybe special prices) of the company behind the charters and its associates. You just need to finance a bigger amount in the beginning, but as a total cost to the family budget it is probably less than just buying it used because you will have any 5-year cumulative profits (less than what pure investors make because you will be doing more maintenance, but still…) Of course it is even better to buy it NEW, but this comes at a premium of maybe >60% for a 5-7 year yacht!

Another interesting video. We can see in your faces that chartering was a painful experience for you and not just the grounding. It makes sense that chartering is just a financial consideration and many other comments here also add good points. I believe you also have another point and that is size of boat you chose and the financial need that imposes (I’m guessing one of your early motivations). We decided to buy a 37 foot new Bavaria back in 2014. We would have enjoyed bigger of course - but every foot more is hugely expensive. We don’t really intend to be live- aboards so the smaller size is fine and economics are very fine. For your ultimate goal I can imagine size matters - and the pain maybe worth it? At least one day soon?

I understand you very well I run my Hanse 400 5 years on charter and had more cost for fixing the boat and other things. Twisted boom 15 degree, 4 Toilet does, lost things, lost radar, leather sofa painter with roller pen and 1000 surprises more. My happiest day was when the charter period was gone. I don’t like to make thatch experience once again. Good luck for you and your beautiful boat

Glad to see your smiling! great information, My boat is 20 years old and I still won't let anyone take it out. I had a question, you mentioned in a past video, that Hansa told you that the stringers were glassed in and of course they were not, did you have any recourse with that? I know that most new production boats most everything is glued in, Just wondered. Looking forward to your sailing vids. Cheers

Very informative video. The other downside is if your boat is heavily chartered it loses a lot of its re sale value, we have all seen the boat you want at a really low comparable price, it usually means ex charter.

Great to listen to your comments on chartering your own yacht, I agree that “do not bare boat charter your own personal yacht,as you have now concluded.i have owned and skippered yachts for over 40 years and been skippering charter yachts in the Greek Islands for over 20 years, as I live in New Zealand my groups which I put together from repeat and recommended customers then they buy my package for their Greek Sailing Holiday, I always use the same charter company in Athens and as my groups are usually 8 pax comprising of four couples mostly all friends which has been a formula that has worked over the years the yachts are always 4/5 cabins with en-suite plus skippers cabin, which means size of charter yacht is 50/60feet to accommodate that cabin layout. As we travel from NZ the charter period is at least 21 days with sightseeing in Athens and Rhodes so with a 3 week charter and travel the whole trip is usually around a month. In all the years of bare boat chartering I have only had to forfeit the security deposit once when I damaged the rudder, that cost 2500 euros, I did consider buying my own yacht in Greece and chartering it but came to the same conclusion as you guys. When I think about it (in a positive way) - wouldn't you go for a big Orust yacht from the 90's - replace the teak deck and engine - go down to the Med and just do your thing? What if you charter the boat "with on-board crew". The crew of course are you two -captain and assistant. That would attract older more serious adventurers and you can keep an eye on your own boat all the time. Plus you can charge more for the charter. I have been thinking of doing this in the Mediterranean with my boat. Any thoughts on that?

Chris. On one of your video I saw your aft anchor with rope winch. Looks like something that could fit in my 348. May I ask for technical information about this. Thanks and I hope you are able to keep your wonderful boat. :-)

I think chartering is best left to a business venture. If you love your boat but need to generate income/reduce cost then one possibility is a boat partnership with someone you have assessed as ‘someone as passionate as you’ and who would love the boat as much as you. The trick is finding the right partner.

The way some people view charter boats says a lot about their lack of courtesy, poor manners and lack of respect for others. I can say that we end up fixing stuff that is broken by others , tidying and cleaning the boats we charter - regardless of who owns them. We don’t thrash the engine and gearbox or the rig. I was always taught that if you borrow something, you always return in better, cleaner condition that when you received it. “You bend it, you mend it”. But there are two clear categories of people who charter. Those who care as though the boat was their prized possession and those who really don’t give a sh*t. I have also been on boats with “qualified” sailors who are a danger and liability to themselves and others. Good decision not to leave the boat in charter.!

There is a paint can that puts on a removable clear film that works on vehicles I wonder if it would work on wood or other material

Would have liked more detail on how this chartering arrangement worked. Where we are in order to charter you have to be a member of the Yacht Club and then the owner can put requirements on the charter, like the skipper needs to have ASA 101, 103, 104 certs or something like that. Also $3500 a week seems cheap. A 40 Benetau is like $1200 per day here.

Great video and good advice! There are two words that give many people instant nausea, "charter" and "Croatia". And when one puts these two words together ... it's a disaster. Unfortunately, the majority of used Hanse sailboats available for sale are in Croatia which leaves us with only two options either order a new Hanse or buy some other brand used sailboat in a country far away from Croatia 😄

If you don’t want the scratch don’t charter, it’s like renting your house, lending your car.

I don’t think I could do it. I know accidents happen but too many people are either careless or simply oblivious. I’ve had our boat for 3 years and haven’t scratched the steering wheel, galley or table.

Croatia is the best for charter

Chartering your own boat it's a big no. If you want to enter the business with an investment then ok, but I would hate to see my own boat ruined or damaged. A boat it's like a wife: you never borrow her to anyone else no matter what.

I would say the question is, do you want to sail or make money. I true sailor will know the answer

you two want to charter ( Cashin ) but you really don't want to have anyone on your boat sounds a little to anal . you must realize that wear and tear happens. that the reason why they make new boats all the time.
