When it comes to using an AD200 in a modifier the question that people will ask is, "should I use the bare bulb or should I use the fresnel head, or does it matter, can I use either one?" In this video we're going to find out if it matters which one you use.

Great video! Interestingly enough, in the Sharpen video about "Overpowering the Sun" the AD200 with the fresnel head smoked an AD600 when they were both using a shoot-through umbrella, but fell notably behind when they were both placed in softboxes. You touched on the difference of the intensity of light between the ad200 bare bulb and the fresnel head, but it's good to be aware that the modifier itself can additionally make an enormous difference on top of that.

I agree 100% @Ryan Redmond. I have modifiers that cut light by 3.5 stops when all levels of diffusion are in (which is usually overkill anyway, lol).

@Christopher Rodriguez I truly feel it's important to at least know how to use flash, even if you choose not to use it much. Sometimes natty light can be very restricting in your compositional options and it's nice to have the flexibility of OCF to do whatever you want, not to mention the creative options it opens up. I'm looking forward to seeing some of your flash work. ;-)

Very helpful comparison! I've been shopping for my first strobes, and been chart a course to build a system over time. Naturally, the AD200 is high on the list, but I'm sort of cross shopping with studio strobes that are cheaper. I suspect that I will start with a 3 light setup with an AD200 and a pair of speed lights as secondary lighting. The fresnel head of the AD200 will probably match the speed lights better, and now I know that the fresnel head isn't something to be super concerned about, especially as a beginner.
@AnthonyToglife
@AnthonyToglife 5 ай бұрын
That is a system I use quite often - an AD200 and two speedlights, and it has served me very well. Some photographers will push the AD300, which I understand, and I could argue that’s a great option, but I like having two AD200s with the AD-B2 adapter that I can use for a 400w light if needed.
@nevermore311
@nevermore311 4 ай бұрын
@@AnthonyToglife Yes, that will be my plan. I was going to get some MS300s or SK400s, but eventually I will venture to outdoor shooting. What good is 400W if I can't use it where I need it, right? I'll probably start with an AD200 as my key light for a while, and then add the AD-B2 when I'm ready for some outdoor shooting. I've seen people pull off lovely beach shots with speed lights, to be fair. Although I'm sure it must've been at full power with a horrible recycle time. The AD200 makes a lot of sense. Even if I outgrow it, it's a perfect fill light for a larger setup.

Repeating this experiment with a double head mount (2xad200) and comparing it with a single ad400 would be interesting. While I do not have an octobox, i may try it with a rectangular softbox. I wonder if a double ad200 bulb setup does create a hot spot in the center or not.

I could @Michael Phillips, but, what I really wanted to illustrate in this video was an apple-to-apple comparison; in other words, how do they both perform under the same conditions/circumstances. From a practicality standpoint, yes, removing the inner baffle would help, and I actually have a video comparing the light with the inner in and removed, and for the most part, the inner only provides marginal (really need to look hard) improvements to the quality of light.

Unfortunately I don't have the round head for my AD200 @Chas Bell, but, I would imagine the result would be about the same since the round head is still directional (light forward) and using a deflector plate would essentially eliminate most of the benefit of using a round head.
@rickjbradbury

The AD100 has the highest green tint. The V1 just needs a .8 magenta to correct it if mixing with other lights otherwise just customer WB that thing. Fresnel heads give an over inflated mater reading in softboxes as they are more focused, I personally will take bare bulb over that any day. Bare bulb in umbrellas like shoot through need a wide reflector really.
@AnthonyToglife
@AnthonyToglife Жыл бұрын
The deflector plate in Glow modifiers eliminate that more focused light @Richard Bradbury, and if one feathers the light (as I prefer to do), this also eliminates any issues with meter readings. I wouldn't necessarily say fresnel heads give over inflated readings though; if you have the center of the modifier facing your subject, it would be best to not blow out that part of the face or subject by metering more around the perimeter of your modifier. I hardly ever use the bare bulb and I personally don't have any issues metering or using fresnel heads.

Great video and info! I never tested this myself but expected the result would be something like this. I usually use the bare bulb because it is spreading light nice and even and I never really ran out of power. One question though: you mentioned you used double diffusers. Did you do that on both the bare bulb and the Fresnel head? I would expect that the use of a double diffuser instead f a single would also make an important difference in output power. So maybe the bare bulb would not need a double diffuser and recover a bit more of the power loss?
@AnthonyToglife
@AnthonyToglife 2 жыл бұрын
Hey @Pascal Hibon, I did use a double diffuser for both, mainly because when doing tests like this, the conditions need to be controlled. The point wasn't to try to match outputs, but to measure the amount of output from both options under the same conditions. I've also done tests on single layer versus double diffusion and their is a difference in the quality of light, so using one diffuser to "match" the output of the fresnel head wouldn't be a viable option for many.

What's the best way to add gels when using a bare bulb?
@AnthonyToglife
@AnthonyToglife 7 ай бұрын
You have to get gels designed for “studio” lighting, otherwise you would be very likely to burn a whole through it, or worse, it could catch fire. But in terms of how to actually use the gel, the easiest way is to gaffer tape the gel to the inside of your modifier in front of the bulb. If that’s not possible due to their being no good place to tape the gel to, you can just wrap the gel around the bare bulb. Again, you want a gel made specifically for this use case as they’re designed to withstand heat.

So if you using a AD-b2 your getting the best of both. Even light with power. Because them 10s will then be 20s right ? Or is it not that simple?
@AnthonyToglife
@AnthonyToglife 2 жыл бұрын
@Amerson Griffin I'm assuming you're referring to the meter readings? Using the AD-B2 wouldn't necessarily turn those 10's into 20's, because a big part of the fresnel head hitting 20 in the center is more because the fresnel head concentrates the light. Bare bulb doesn't have that light concentration so it's not as simple as doubling the readings.

@amersongriffin6284 2 жыл бұрын
@@AnthonyToglife Ooh okay gotcha well I have them both now just thinking on how I should take advantage of both. But you should definitely do more video on the ad-b2 because there’s definitely not enough videos out. I feel like having two ad-200s pros top the AD600 and 400. Because you can use them separate like having one in front of your subject and have a back light. And if you are in the sun you can use them together.

I have not but the round head wouldn't be much different than the regular fresnel head when shooting into a modifier. It likely would change the pattern of the hot spot but you're still going to have a brighter light in the center than on the edges.

Why is it that Rob Hall in his video states that the fresnel head produces only 1/10 more power than the bare bulb. When by design, the lenses of the fresnel head concentrate the light making it way more efficient than the bare bulb as demonstrated in your test
@AnthonyToglife
@AnthonyToglife Жыл бұрын
I can't comment on that @YogaLifeEtc because I don't know what video you're referring to, and Rob Hall is damn good at testing. If I had to guess, he likely metered the heads bare, meaning without any modifier in front of them. In my case, in using the modifier, it's very likely the modifier itself intensified the light from the fresnel head, creating a bigger difference between the two. I will test this later without a modifier to see what results I get, and I'll report back.
