The WORST burnt drive circuit - GZPA 1.4000DXII Amplifier repair

Despite the terrible condition of the drive circuit in this amplifier, I managed to get her back up and running mostly by cutting away the conductive sections of the board and re-routing where the drive transistor legs connected to. I wouldnt offer warranty on a repair like this as its effectively a write off, but nice to get it back up and running for hopefully a decent amount of time.

+Cole Woodruff sounds like vibration damage. Might not be covered under warranty and could be an easy fix for you.

Factory installed smoke, all electronics run on it. Once it is out, those parts are gone. Until all components with new smoke are replaced, the unit will not funtion haha. Good video mate.

My theory: there might have been a loose screw/bit of metal knocking around in the case, it hit the back of the board where the mark on the case is (between rail and ground I believe), it vaporized and took out the PS section.

I can't say for sure without looking at where the zener's are being used in circuit but if I had to guess, they are probably being used as some kind of voltage spike suppression or some similar function. That board tho.....DAMN! Burnt crispy!

I would probably have cut out entire board section and replaced it with vector board and rerun traces with a repair kit. Used to use "Pace Cir-Kit" repair kit, which is still available, but now bloody expensive. (Found a mostly complete set on ebay ~$15 shipped, but new kits run about $135.) Kits include through hole rivets.

Pretty much what I was thinking, only way to be sure you won't get future problems from the carbonised board.

You stated output fets are 24n40f, saying it’s a bit excessive on the voltage side and that you could replace with 69n25 fets that would make it much more stable @.5 ohm. I’ve noticed the switch lowers the voltage rating but increases the amperage rating of the output mosfets. Im assuming that’s the main change between these fets, is that usually the common way for making an amplifier more stable at lower ohmage? I’m new to the amp repair scene and wanting to learn everything so any info, on any level, would be greatly appreciated bro, been binging on your vids and they are helping tons with my Kicker 06ZX750.1 power supply meltdown repair 🖖🏼

why don't you take a picture of the damaged area, and completely cut it out and replace with a new board with out the copper clad. Or use copper clad board and re etch what is missing and splice it back together with a nice looking repair that will last. I know it would cost more but as for providing a warranty you be able to do that with no problem.

Hey there... I've been looking at a 4000w mains inverter (sine wave) recently which is surprisingly similar to the amps that you are showing, and I wondered if you have ever seen a similar design, it's quite interesting. The unit was reported with intermittent flashing of the protection / shutdown light, and a ticking sound, but was still running, and powering ~2000w of equipment. The unit has an architecture almost identical to the amps you are repairing, and even has the same type of driver boards (I'd love to know if you recognise any of those from amplifiers!). Anyway, it's a 24v unit, and the power supply section has 6 power transformers, each has a pair of IRFP4368 FETs... but each transformer, with it's pair of FETS is in an isolated circuit with on board fuses (sharing the drive to the gate)... and what has happened is one pair of FETS has gone down, burned the drive resistors etc... but the (40A) fuse for that pair of FETS has blown, and the remainder of the unit is still running!... I believe that one of the drive channels is impacted by the failed FETS however, and this is causing the remainder of the power supply to run at a lower voltage than normal (it needs 340vdc)... and this is what is triggering the warning light. The net result seems that I have only 2 FETs to replace, not 12, and the unit remained operational, albeit at a lower output power.... I'm somewhat impressed! I'd love to know what you think about that design.

Are most of these amps that you repair because of running them at too low of ohms or poor airflow?

Hi dude, sadly no, I have asked sounddigital for information on their component parts but they only give this info to official repair centers and will not tell me. As a result the amp is not repairable without knowing the part numbers.

Hi, i have a huge skar audio skv2 2500.1d amplifier that has been blown for a while, sitting around in my house and it feels like a waste, but, i am unable to find someone who is willing to work on an amp of its caliber in my area. Is there a way for me to send it in to get it fixed? And approximately how much it would cost... it doesnt look bad but what do i know. I am not sure where to message you on though! Thank you!!

Wouldn't it be easier to drill/cut out the entire burnt section, etch your own PCB, and epoxy it in like a drywall patch? I'd never trust anything that charred.
@friedmule5403
@friedmule5403 5 жыл бұрын
Please allow me to answer:-) Your idea is fine but often not the best solution, you risk making that part of the board a week point. You can easily trust a charred board if you do remove all what is charred and then lay new tracks, if particular bad, you can carve out the charred spot and lay new tracks and then fill up with epoxy. In that way, you still have the original stiffness and protected tracks.
