A little advice for u my friend wherever you go in India start the bargain at its 5 percent price and never go up beyond 10 percent what the seller says. The watches of 3 pack in Kolkata new market is 300 to 400 max.

Nah man... they do it with everyone. Even though I don't live there but I speak the local language fluently and I got scammed too many times. It's better to buy from big shopping malls or branded shops. The local market is filled with scammers.

I have two modes of dealing with people on these streets: 1. College look, ruffled hair, casual clothing, asking them how much is the price, calling them bhaiya. I get scammed instantly 2. Formal shirt, pants and shoes, serious demeanor, telling them how much I will pay for this, gets you respected and you can push hard on any deal. And then if you want to be magnanimous to that rare well behaved person, pay them extra at the end.

I am Indian and I am going to tell you the fair price of everything you bought. Now 1 USA dollar is approx 70 Indian rupees. Now you can do you math. Taxi - 15 rupees par kilometer. Hotel room - For 24 hours 800 rupees. ( 11 dollar). Watches - single piece price is 500 rupees . For 3 watches 1500 rupees ( 21 dollar ). Ornament - 400 rupees. ( 6 dollar) Clothes - For two pieces 200 rupees. 100 rupees per piece. ( 3 dollar) .

A few things: 1. The airport desk told you there's an ATM outside. There should have been an ATM just outside the gate (and not 2 KMS). It's always helpful to ask the local people, they're friendly and will guide you right, as they've no commercial interest in you. 2. That green trinket is worth less than 100 INR. 3. Those watches are worth less than 100 INR each, so less than 300 INR for 3. 4. The silk scarf deal was still decent. 2 for 300 INR. 5. The hotel was a decent deal. Although I wouldn't pay that much for WiFi. WiFi should have been free. 6. Eateries mostly never bargain. But you're brave enough to walk those alleys, especially that local wine shop, it is dangerous. These are frequented by local labor and the alcohol served is cheap and harmful. I wouldn't walk into such a place, and I'm Indian. But you're definitely something, keep going!
