Thank you for showing the way you work with the easy parts as wel as the struggles. Most of my students have a hard time believing that drawing is most often trail and error, and believe that they should get it all right with one first line. So its great I can now show them your video's to convince them that accuracy takes the courage to fail and try it again.

Wow, you are very good with your lines. How can you enlarge with this method? How can one use electronic version of the reference picture?

WHat about the curved mouths on the second plate? i dont understand how you would achive all of the curves unless we are expected to split into each curve into straight lines. they seem freely drawn.

Once you have enough "scaffolding" in place with straight lines, it's ok to curve them.

Why not use measurements from plumb line and horizontal line?

You can certainly do that as well. Just make sure that your plumb line and horizontal line that you are referencing is placed correctly.

Is there a reason why you're not measuring at this stage? I mean, should one try not to measure for the sake of observation training?

Hi Ricardo, there are different philosophies about measuring depending on which atelier method being used. At some point, however, every artist needs to depend more on observation and less on measuring. Measuring is simply a tool to help your eyes be more accurate in their observations.

I think I got it. You mean like the side wheels on a kids bike, right? With practice the estimation of the artists eye will improve so that the drawings will become more "spontaneous" but at the same time accurate and proportional. Thanks for your very helpful hint :) Btw, these videos are great, and are really helping me improving my drawing skills. Thank you for that!

Measuring is just a tool to help train your eye to see better. At some point, it's good to practice making educated guesses. Because you have a strong (measured) framework at this stage in the drawing, it is a good place to start practicing eyeballing distances. Different atelier instructors have different methods, this is just the way I have found most effective for training students' eyes.
