This was helpful because it reminded me that shading can be accomplished without blending with a stumps, tissue, fingers, etc. Very helpful. Thanks so much.

Is this the last one in this series? I'm not getting any more populating on KZfaq . Wonderful lessons. I learned something I should have learned in College Fine Art program that never instilled this. I think this is important to drill in.

Are you using a softer charcoal when laying in the shadows? Soft, medium and hard are mentioned in the material section and I’m not sure if I missed something on the grades of charcoal to use.

Do you move your stroke in one direction or do you go back and fourth? Thanks!

Hello, I mostly go in one direction but will occasionally keep pressure down going two directions, particularly in dark areas.

I"ve noticed that while trying to achieve darker shades, my charcoal is lifting while I am laying it down. I have done several internet searches on this but have, so far, been unable to find anyone addressing this. Is it the quality of my charcoal? My paper? My technique? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Jane, this is a very common problem when drawing with charcoal. It's caused by "killing" the tooth on your paper. There are bumps on the paper that hold charcoal. If you lay down charcoal too hard and quickly, it flattens these bumps and they cannot hold as much charcoal. That is why it is important to layer your darks in so that you do not "kill" the tooth of the paper. In your next drawing, I would recommend using softer charcoal and layering in your darks with a lighter hand. I hope this helps and good luck!

I haven't started the yet but I'm noticing that when I perform this exercise on my A3 paper that the softer nitram, after a few layers, pushes its dark value away. I think I'm going to try Strathmore paper and see if it holds better. Anyone else had this issue?

Oh yes, A3 paper doesn't hold charcoal well at all. If you are using standard paper like that, just do it with a pencil, no use fighting the wrong paper with charcoal when it won't hold charcoal.
