I want one of the Córdobas. I have grown fond of the brand as they offer good quality without spending a fortune. Have the 25tce and it’s wonderful. And I do know quality as I also have a Martin solid Koa tenor as well. Baritone will be super nice to have as I started with guitar and because of playing uke for awhile, the old Dread feels huge. The Baritone Uke will be a great addition to the team and may fill the guitar void.

I'm so glad there's a range of baritones available, especially ones in the lower price range. I feel like when I was first interested in buying one (7 or so years ago) there was only the Makala MK-B (?) available for the cheap, and every one of those I heard wasn't quite good enough, or ones in the higher price ranges. maybe I wasn't looking hard enough. Really should buy a nicer baritone one of these days, my Korala UKB450 is on it's last elbows (its only plus is that Omega Music put a Fishman active pickup in it as an experiment...and some emotional attachment)

I preferred the Kala SAB over the Pono. Warmer tone and resonance I thought. I have a custom walnut Bonanza baritone that sings beautifully ..

I've moved on to baritones, I've got the Clearwater, kala 8 string, Enya, kala solid accasia (though it looks like you have a different style maybe in the video), and a moselle bamboo. Love the Zachary so tempted by the one you had earlier in the year with the striking ziricote back and sides. Just can't afford it! 😭

Thanks for the overview! I liked several ukes very much. The ZT was the one I *wanted* to like the most - because of the handy cutaway and the great looks - but to me it sounded quite harsh and shallow. Is this just the way it sounds or might that be more about strings and/or the specific recording?

Hi Alex, I still have the Pono MB I bought from SUS some years ago - lovely instrument. I've just acquired an Antonio Cavalho baritone which has surprised me mightily - lovely warm tone ideal for mellow jazz and a joy to play. Very light (no truss rod unlike the Pono) but well worth a look. Have also just been watching your reviews of Ultimate High End tenors. Very tempting!!! First, however, I'll wait for the Pono electric steel-strung baritones to arrive ... oh god, I can feel an attack of UAS coming on again.

@@altviooltom Absolutely no problem. Still plays and sounds as good, if not better, than when I bought it. In fact, it's now the only baritone uke that I still have - since posting the above comment, I had at least two other baritones, but the Carvalho left them all for dust. I originally bought from Amazon and reviewed it by awarding 5 stars, as did another reviewer. www.amazon.co.uk/Antonio-Carvalho-BS-Baritone-Ukulele/dp/B008PO9E7I I think Hobgoblin probably stock it as part of their range of folk instruments.

If I may interject. I agree with it sounding really nice although I did replace the saddle with a bone one. I bought the Cavalho baritone through ‘Thomann de’ (U.K.) it’s headstock is unbranded and has Thomann sticker inside. It also appears to have extra herringbone purfling around the edge. www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_baritone_ukulele_de_luxe.htm. I wrote a longer review in the reviews section for it. Hope this helps!

@@adamsandor3883 Interesting - especially as Thomann list one of the specs as "Bottom and sides: Solid acacia" which is exactly the same as mine even though some websites described it as laminated. The edge of the soundboard as clearly visible at the soundhole definitely shows that it's of solid wood construction. Your instrument and mine are obviously very, very similar, despite the brand name difference. Mine has no bound edge purfling and the fingerboard is of a much darker brown than the one illustrated in the link you provided. Superb instrument though, which is why I have kept it despite having had or tried baritones by Pono, Kala, Kanile'a and Ohana.

For me the stand-out was the cedar-topped Cordoba. It sounded almost like a flamenco guitar, a very rich sound with strong bass notes. Is that always the case for cedar tops? Do they always sound more "guitar-ish" than spruce?

Great review video. Worth noting that all Zachary Taylor ZT Ukuleles, including the Baritone are individually hand-made to order. Available in a variety of finishes, and can be fully spec'd up including your name inlaid in abalone on the fingerboard. Available in Maple, Acacia and Ziricote back and sides, with and without fishman pickup. Enquire at SUS to have them spec one up for you or go checkout the website at ztukuleles.com If you do order via the ztukuleles website though, please do make sure you mention in the 'Additional Information' Section, that you were inspired by the SUS review. Every instrument is made to order, so takes around 10-12 weeks for delivery, though SUS often have at least one instrument in stock.

We all realize don't we? That except that it's bigger. You could just take the bottom two strings off your nylon string guitar and pretty much have a baritone. Ukulele, right?
@SouthernUkuleleStore
@SouthernUkuleleStore 4 жыл бұрын
If you own a guitar I can see sense in not trying a baritone before a Concert or a Tenor uke but what about all the other variables that make this suggestion underwhelming? What about the extra 6'' scale length? The big nut width with loads of random extra space you have created? Or, even the completely different tone created by the body size difference that soaks up loads of the brighter frequencies? Also, if your classical guitar is set up properly you will likely find the strings buzz without the E and the A to balance the tension. I think the majority of the people out there watching a video on Baritone ukes above the beginners price point will have an understanding of the similarities to guitar tuning but much like taking the B and E string off you guitar and saying it's tuned the same as a Bass; it's fine for a bit of fun but what makes an instrument is so much more than the tuning.

Eastern Cowboy the Córdoba Ukes aren’t given the respect they are due. They are great ukes for a modest price point. I have a Martin Tenor that I love (solid koa) but have found plenty that cost less and are very nice. I spent a mint on a Gibson Acoustic that I still have and play rarely since I took up uke. I love it, but I would be lying to myself if I said I hadn’t played many guitars much cheaper that were just as nice. Long gone are the days I spend huge money on instruments, I’ve found that the differences are subtle after a certain amount of money. Obviously aesthetically speaking, they can vary huge. Ohana, Cordoba, Lanakai, Orangewood and plenty of others make very nice instruments without having to take out 2nd mortgages. I agree with ya, I liked the Córdoba Baritone.

@GEOFF KNOLL - Names change, down the ages . . . . there has been something with four strings of a similar size for hundreds of years - try looking up 'Cuatro' and 'Taropatch', for example. Some histories suggest that the guitar was once a 4-string thing!
