Good review, Chris and Will. That said, here's some facts for Will: Density of CPM 3V = 0.280 lb/ cu in. D2 = 0.278 lb/ cu in. 1095 hi carbon steel = 0.284 lb/ cu in. So, 6/1000 of a pound or 96/1000 of an ounce, in a cubic inch of steel of difference from lightest to heaviest. And, D2 is lighter than CPM 3V. You can't tell the difference by holding a knife. For all practical purposes the densities are the SAME. And, Will, once again, if you put a thigh strap on a dangler sheath you can remove and replace the knife with one hand and no problems with the sheath moving...as if you didn't know.

As far as the comments about the steel being lighter, etc. there’s something about this knife where when you have it hand, you understand! Pretty magically put together knife. Thanks for the video...got mine today.

hey man keep up the good work, my wife and I love watching your videos. was saving up for a honey badger but missed out on getting one. but the BR cub was my strong second. After seeing this video I'm all in. Getting one asap, just wanted to say yeah, Ohio weather sucks right now but it'll get better for us Ohioans. thanks again for all the good info.

I know it’s a little older video, but you’ve got me on Bark River for sure. My Bushcrafter is the best outdoors knife I’ve ever used (full convex, not the Scandi-convex). I don’t really need a bigger knife, I have a Ken Onion Outcast with my own grind on it, but despite that knifes excellent factory kydex sheath, I am starting to consider doing a yellow hawk companion system with my BR bushcrafter and the Outcast.

Lol!!!!! CPM3V is lighter than other steels!! It must have added helium. I don’t know how Will says that with a straight face. You should put in a disclaimer though. There are a few gullible folks that might believe and repeat that.

If he's not joking, maybe it's just how Bark River skeletonizes their tangs for balance that makes them feel light, as opposed to the unskeletonized tangs of LTWK?

I love CPM3V along with a lot of the other "super steels" (as I own a ton), but I've started to move back toward high carbon blades because of the ease of maintenance in the field. As Will points out in this video, if you don't keep that edge maintained, it's a pain in the ass to sharpen in the field. Also, IMHO I cannot personally tell much of a difference in toughness and edge retention between something like A2, O1 or 1095 and 3V as it pertains to field use.
@preparedmind101

I've never had an issue. A few swipes on ceramic is all it takes.
@theaveragewoodsman6002
@theaveragewoodsman6002 6 жыл бұрын
PREPAREDMIND101 for example, I can touch my LT Wright GNS in 3V up with no issue as long as I don't let it get super dull. All I was pointing out is that it's significantly easier to maintain a non "super steel" knife in the field.

Ceramic and a small strop loaded up with bark river diamond paste 5 mc. Works great in the field. Or ceramic alone. Spyderco has a great lil ceramic 2 sided hone. about 5" long 1" wide comes in a leather pouch. I just load up one side of the pouch with bark rivers black compound, and the other side with there diamond paste. Isn't as good as a real strop. But works great after you get used to the right angle, and pressure.

I just pulled the trigger and got a Cub from DLT trading. All the bark river cubs are not located the the section under "Cub" when you choose the section off of their main list. Do a search for "Bark River Cub" and others showed up that were not on the original list. thats how i found a dark curly maple with 3 mosaic pins instead of the 1 center pin and cheaper than most. happy hunting.

Looks like a really great knife all the way around and that sheath is pretty spectacular. Good video, you guys work really well together and always seem to have fun when you do. On that note I'm going to throw this out there as something for the two of you to consider doing... You guys should create a new channel for posting videos that you make together and call it; "Mind Mantis 2in1" or maybe "Mind vs. Mantis: 2in1", or something along those lines. Of course the name possibilities are endless but the logo possibilities for "Mind/Mantis" combinations are kind of awesome. Video possibilities might be things along the lines of you guys comparing the usefulness of different gear, and of course knives, from your two differing perspectives; preparedness vs. bush crafting. I've had that bubbling around in my head for a couple of months now but seeing you guys working together again on this one finally got me to put it out there for you to consider.

Fucking love that sheath, you say handle is half the knife which it is! But when you get that perfect storm, when everything all lines up handle, blade and sheath it just immediately becomes a go to favorite and the more you use a knife the more you either love it or hate it, so looks like so far so good but once you've had it for a few months maybe come back to it and let me know/ us know how it performs because this is a knife I am definitely interested in.

It blows me that will makes 3v look so light it’s really not that much lighter ... I mean not noticeable but will because he doesn’t particularly like 3v I guess wants to make it look super light but people it’s really not that much difference ... there’s more of a diff on edge retention and toughness of the steel which you should talk about rather then a weight which really isn’t noticeable at all
