I have 5 bark river 3V knives. I go out for weeks at a time. I find a ceramic rod and strop with a 1 micron diamond paste with keep a 3V blade razer sharp. I have been using them for 3 years and never had to reprofile a blade. I go 3V all day long. Great video.

I have both and by far the Gunny is the better of the two for me. I hunt and overnight hikes and the Gunny can cut up a deer with sharpness to spare and food prep is much better with the Gunny...but this is my experience and my opinion is not fact because choice of knife is subjective. Great video 👌☮

Thanks for the great comparison! I am debating the gunny Hunter vw the f1. I think for now the f1 supports the purpose of survival with little care required although the gunny is a beautiful knife

Should you be sharpening a convex grind on a whetstone? Isn't stropping recommended so you don't lose the convex profile?
@likota123
@likota123 7 жыл бұрын
You have to use the correct technique when sharpening on whetstones. It is not just a back and forth motion but you also have to follow the contour of the blade on the stone. Stropping is good to touch up the blade but sharpening a dull blade requires more than that.

I wouldn’t want to throw a Bark River into a backpack and go into wet or cold conditions. I have no problems with abusing a Fällkniven; it has a maintenance free plastic sheath and rubberized handle, I can throw the knife into mud and snow without problems
@keggerous
@keggerous 6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't feel that way honestly. You can get the leather treated so it becomes some what more resistant to the weathering. Also, handles on the Bark River knives come in all sorts of materials. Some of which are completely water proof.,

I fully agree. If you don't want to babysit your knife the Fallkniven is the better choice. To my eye the Bark River's are more pleasing to the eye but that won't help in the wet and damp climate. It's all about performance. Both perform good but Fallkniven is better when it comes to being care free most of all in wet conditions.

@@griff7749 I don't recall a video where DBK actually tested any knife in wet or cold conditions. They are usually in their backyard. They also seem to spend a lot of time on editing and special effects and it's nice to watch. I'm just not sure if you can depend on the judgment of people that won't leave their backyard?
@stevanoutdoor
@stevanoutdoor 5 жыл бұрын
@@griff7749 Sure they have trees in their backyard (parents back yard) but no jungle, no desert, no arctic, no taiga, etc. The term 'Bush' originates from Australia and means Wilderness. Not woodland. They are not outside when it rains or when it's very cold. They don't have to carry the stuff in their backpacks. I have nothing against reviewing knives from a desktop, backyard, etc. I do watch them and even make them. I'm not that good at filming. DBK is sponsored. They talk a lot about the steels. The truth is that for somebody who knows what he/she is doing the steel is not that important. Everything they do with these super steels I can do with a 10 euro Hultafors GK if the knives are the same size of course. So to call DBK the authority of knives is complete bs.

Well presented. I have had the F1 for years (Swedish Pilot Survival version - coated) but haven't really used it much. Don't particularly like the handle texture or that lanyard hole location). Recently got the Gunny Hunter with C-TEC handles & carbon fiber bolsters. Much prefer the feel of the BRK in my hand than the F-1. New subscriber - looking forward to more! Thanks

+likota123 Bark River has also achieved Internet marketing genius with the voluminous handle choices. Customers spend lots of time looking at dozens & dozens of images of the same model knife rather than the "if you've seen one F1, you've seen them all". We're able to personalize our selections without the wait & extreme price of most custom knives.

+ogenmatic True. The Gunny Hunter in this video is relatively unadorned with its black micarta handles. My Bravo 1 on the other hand is a good example of Bark River's customization options: Bravo 1 - LT version - rampless - in CPM3V with spalted curly birch handles.

Hello, I'm thinking of taking this knife, is it you, is it one of the best survival knives on the market today? How much do you use it? I've read that some users claim that glue under the handle after a glossy glue under the mitts started to get out of the top of the handle, did you ever have anything like that? Thanks Michele
@likota123

My top choice for a survival knife would be a SurviveKnife GSO 5.1 or a Fallkniven S1. I still use the Gunny Hunter and the F1 but not for survival and I never had any issues with the glue on the handles.

That is hard to say. Maybe the F1 because I have it for a long time and still use it frequently. The Gunny Hunter is very good as well but only after you make some modifications like described in one of my videos. Recently I use the Manly Patriot a lot. It is a very good little knife and very affordable.

Surviliast Ed Stafford had been everywhere on this planet.Two weeks in the mountains of Kazakhstan his survival knife was the Mora companion knife cost ten dollars,did everything with the knife,fire,food,field dressing game and using the Mora knife too climb mountains.Used the Mora in every show so far on Discovery channel.I'm a hunter and knife collector,have a big collection of Scandi knives eg.Helle Mora martini and Boker but I keep the Mora companion knife in my game bag and a Buck light knife on my belt for field dressing Deer and other game.I have the rest of my knives in the gun room,im thinking of getting the Falkniven F1,but I have very big hands triple X gloves and the handle looks too small.Would you recommend the Falkniven F1,any advice would be much appreciated.Stay safe.
@likota123
@likota123 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I have XL sized hands and the F1 fits just fine but I don't know how it would work with extremely large hands. But if the Mora Companion works fits your hands then the F1 should as well. Alternatively, you could go with the S1 - the F1's bigger brother. After 7 or 8 years the F1 is still my go-to knife in wet&cold weather. The grip is very secure and the sheath despite being ugly turned out to be very resilient. Some people complain that Fallkniven knives are too expensive, especially the Pro line. I can't comment on that because I bought mine a long time ago. The convex-ground laminated VG10 works fine and is easy to maintain. Laminated CoS in the F1 Pro seems to be even better but it is a lot more expensive. If you can get a good deal on the F1, I would say go for it.

It can be used for bushcraft but I would recommend to reprofile the blade first. The Gunny is more an allround camp knife thean a true bushcraft knife. For actual bushcraft I would prefer a dedicated bushcraft knife like the Bark River (Ultralite) Bushcrafter or similar knives.

I bought the Fallkniven H1 VG1O steel blade with 5 mm. thickness for skinning wild boars. Unfortunately, the knife at the slightest contact with the mud of the coat or with soft contact with the bones transforms very easily into a saw. It's a scrap steel for real hard work at a very high price for what it's worth. Is a survival knife only good for tomatoes and gherkins? I know Gripen pilots blah blah blah. I bought a Bark river in A2 steel which is theoretically mild steel and found my health.
@likota123
@likota123 Жыл бұрын
The H1 is a bit different than the F1 so I can only comment based on the stats and my experiences with the F1 and the KK, which I also have. After all these years I still think the F1 is a good choice for light chopping and splitting of wood. However, I agree with you that the H1 is not an ideal hunting knife. The blade is very thick (even thicker than on the F1) and VG10 does not react well when it hits on bone (even when laminated with softer steel). I also have a BR knife in A2 and I must say that I really like that steel because it is very forgiving, easy to maintain and performs well. In my experience there is only one major downside and that is corrosion resistance or lack thereof. It definitely rusts more than CPM3V but I found out that a light acid wash helps a bit.
@arkas6797
@arkas6797 Жыл бұрын
@@likota123 Although I find zytel a perfect material for an outdoor knife, I made my own knife with cocobolo wood after purchasing the H1 blade from Fallkniven. For my hunting (boar skinning only) the length of the blade, its thickness and its shape theoretically gave me the perfect knife. But in practice the soul of the knife its steel was for crying. The BR with A2 steel can scrape a 150kg boar without blunting its edge. Such a boar has its coat full of mud and 2-5 fingers of hard subcutaneous fat. The minus of A2 steel is as you wrote the torque on the rust.

I always see people commenting that Bark River is better than Fallkniven and that Fallkniven is better than Bark River. But, the people commenting generally haven't used both knives. I'm a Bark River fanboy, so likely won't ever pick up a Fallkniven. That said, it has such a fan base that I'm sure it is an excellent knife as well.

As stated your hard to hear, unenthused voice is hard to take for an entire video. These two knives should never be compared in the first place. I know for some reason people love fallkniven but they are grossly over priced! You get a soft mid range steel and cheap rubber with a crappy sheath while for the same price you can get a high end steel with burl handles and leather sheath. Again, no comparison. You are buying a name while sacrificing quality.

1. "These two knives should never be compared in the first place." Why not? They are both convex ground fixed blade knives and very similar in all dimensions. 2. "I know for some reason people love fallkniven but they are grossly over priced!" I agree but I bought the F1 many years ago when the price was more reasonable. 3. "You get a soft mid range steel..." I don't agree here. If anything the VG10 core is too hard for this knife. Spyderco is notorious for soft VG10. Maybe they should swap their respective batches of VG10. 4. "...and cheap rubber with a crappy sheath" Handles and sheath look and feel cheap but they are very functional in my experience. After all these years the F1 is still my go-to knife in the winter season. 5. "...while for the same price you can get a high end steel with burl handles and leather sheath." At least here in Europe that is not true. Such knives cost at least 100 € more. Btw, I am talking about the regular F1 and not the ridiculosly overpriced F1 Pro.
