The Bark River Ultra Lite Bushcrafter has emerged victorious as my everyday bush knife. Through years of testing and evaluation this knife has been a constant companion and held up to every task I have asked this knife to preform.

I'm with you 100% on this: the Bushcrafter ultralight is all the need one needs. You'll have an EXCELLENT knife for all bushcrafting needs except chopping and major batoning -- and for those things, a $22 Fiskar X7 will do MUCH more for you than any goofy behemoth knife. I have a Bravo 1 LT (3V) and it's TOO big. It's just not needed. I just ordered a BUshcrafter ultralight before watching this video. It will suit me perfectly (and I have no intentions of giving up the Fiskar X7 + a Silky Pocketboy). With those 3 items I am fully equipped in terms of cutting implements -- with first rate tools, IMO, little weight, and not much expense.

Bark river makes some fantastic knives and they're hard to beat. I am, however, a big fan of the LT Wright GNS. It's performed wonderfully for me. Also, I'm from Jackson county NC!

great video. I've come to the same conclusion. I have many bark rivers, 5" mountain man👍, classic drop point hunter👍, gunny hunter, 156 bushcrafter and my 3v ultralight. The ultralight is the best "bushcraft" knife I own. It carves better, throws Sparks better, and dresses out small game etc. better than the full sized bushcrafter. If bark river would make the bushcrafter in a blade thickness somewhere between .125 and 3mm it might beat the ultralight, but as is no way, especially if you don't use your knife for batoning. Listen very carefully to what I am going to say next. In fifty years of being an outdoorsman I have never had to use my knife for batoning. Hell until a couple years ago I didn't know what batoning was in this regard. my ultimate setup? Ultralight bushcrafter, silky saw 2000 and Grandsfors bruks small forest axe.

My kit includes the Ultra Lite Bushcrafter in Elmax steel, a Council Velvicut Axe, and a Corona folding saw. Only the Corona is made outside the U.S. in Mexico. I want quality tools but always try to buy U.S. made products if I can.

I get what you’re saying but for kindling batoning is safer than using an axe. Far more controlled.
@Chiefs500
@Chiefs500 4 жыл бұрын
@@andrewchiles Many of us made kindling exclusively with an axe for 50 years before ever hearing of using a knife for that purpose. Using a knife may be safer for those who are less experienced with using an axe or hatchet. As for me I will always reach for an axe when I have to make kindling.

i completly agree with you, ive got several LT wrights, barkrivers bravo, auroras all those... but the concept of a 1 tool option for everything is something alot of ppl hold on to but imo is NEVER gonna be as good as bringing a large chopper/axe/saw and a small knife like this for detail work... this combo will always beat any one tool option becouse of logics saying a huge knife can never be as good in small detail work and a small knife can never be as good in like chopping and batoning as a huge knife, so imo a combination of 2 knifes or axe and small knife is always far superior. [ dont get me wrong i love the thought of a one tool option for everything for when shit hits the fan, and for that i use my miller bros m8 in z-wear but that is a 900 gram knife and obviously never gonna be as good in detail work as a small knife, but the chances in life where you gonna strand somewhere and only have your one tool options are pretty slim ;) ].

Consider the Mini Kephart for comparison. I have two of each (ULB & MK) and prefer the MK for EDC tasks, actually. Pretty much the same blade stock (of CPM 3V), but the MK has a full height grind and more straight edge. The handle of the MK is not as much contoured, a bit chunkier, but for this knife size it doesn't really matter that much (for me).

Thank you I appreciate it! I have started to pick up some better quality components for video creation and editing. I may even start using the iPhone Xs max as the video quality is so good. I had one and it’s a great knife if you enjoy that size blade. I have a bravo one that I have used for years and that’s about as large as I’ll go. If it’s the only tool you can take and you would be out for awhile then it may come in handy but I believe I can do everything with the standard that I can do with the 1.5 but the 1 would preform better at skinning. For stropping to be useful you have to make sure the knife never gets dull or if it dose a few passes on 1000 grit sand paper will bring the edge back enough to strop.

@@HighCountryHang thanks for the reply. 1. if without axe/saw and go outdoor for a few days, the bigger knife you want to go with is still as large as bravo 1 not 1.5? I think 1.5 may give a light chopping/wielding capability, which may feel more "powerful and capable"; I have ULB, Bravo1 also, but considering if to buy 1.5. 2. I suppose most of your videos are about knife & gear reviews, hope can have more regarding your field bushcraft life, hunting/skinning, trip/hiking recordings, trapping methods, skills, etc. 3. fox river EXT 2 was out, do you think it would excel bravo 1 at bushcraft, camping, hunting, etc.? this is also one I'm considering to buy.. 4. Seems you have a few ULB, do you still go out using mora classic, companion, etc? ULB is definitely better than moras, as a comparison, moras may not feel fulfilling any more.. 5. sheath treatment (maybe with obenauf heavy duty LP), do you think it's necessary? btw, can join bark river official group on facebook. thanks

Great videos and great discussions. I just recently discovered your channel and have already subscribed. I am about to buy my first bushcraft/camping knife and, from your videos, I am little bit torn. Would you recommend to start with a Mora Garberg, for example, or jump straight to the Bark River Ultra Lite Bushcrafter? Maybe the Bark River Mini-Aurora? Are there other models from other manufacturers like LT Wright, for example, that I should consider. I would like to learn bushcraft skills but I also like camping and I would like to be able to use the knife for processing and preparing food, fishing maybe. Thanks in advance for your attention.

@HighCountryHang
@HighCountryHang 5 жыл бұрын
001 Dovehunter thanks for the comment. I have used a few different knives with full height grind. It performs much like the FWFR from BRK. I personally will always prefer a Scandi because I like the shoulder at the top of the grind as it aids in spitting wood, it keeps the wood off the actual cutting edge as much and prolongs the edge sharpness. That being said they I’m sure it’s great.
