Overall, I'm impressed by how well this thing works! For a low-use tool, crafting one from a junky hatchet beats buying one. Another thing to consider is its weight; while this is just a bit heavier than a walking stick, a properly-welded bark spud would be tough to lug around in the woods. One thing I would like to add though: use of leverage should eventually cause the top to start to separate from the axe head. When this does happen, the plan is to add another epoxy-twine binding through the eye and over the top. As a Beta model, I didn't do this yet. Wanted to see what it can handle first.

I used a similar method this summer. Needed to debark three spruce trees but I only had a landscaping edger. Worked surprisingly well. A little harder to get under the bark than a drawknife but due to the crescent cutting edge, it removed a lot of bark in one go.

...which are symbols. Was that a claim to have been born that way? nonononono, let me try to argue you away from that belief, lest you repeat it too often and solidify it. . Symbols are used to express ideas. An idea might be the description of the actual shape/variety/nature of something, or it might be the hypothetical description of something. Both cases are types of arguments. Both cases necessarily yield to some level of error. Both can be expressed through use of other sets of symbols. Logic is mathematics; it is the language-based application of formal argument. Thus, there is no distinction to be made between mathematics and philosophy. . You might have trouble with arithmetic, but that is not mathematics. Numbers are just one mechanistic aspect of it that's tough to overcome for everyone (which is why we've started to circumvent it with calculators). Though it may be uncomfortable to try, if your brain can handle grammar and syntax, it can also handle some logic. . Lifting weight sucks. It hurts, and it's boring. But the more you do it, the better you get, and the more you can tolerate. Juggling is an analogous skill developmentally, I'd imagine. Similar to both is abstraction development; the brain will eventually re-wire itself in such a way to be able to accept new, strange(r) geometries. . Although the brain starts to lose its processing power while you're still in your late 20's, it also continues to get much better at what it does. It learns through leverage by application of previously learned tools, and it develops conceptual bridges across/through disciplinary boundaries. As much as anything can be, continued ineptitude is a choice.* . *This is not a value claim. My personal experience with tumbling down the abstraction-distraction rabbit-hole was that it was nothing but problems. It might be the case that the highest-quality life is one that stays away from it all. Between the infinitesimal, the integer, and the infinite, there's nothing to be found but paradox: maybe we were just born unable to deal with that reality.
@DaveScurlock
@DaveScurlock 4 жыл бұрын
@@pocket83squared Definitely not a claim to have been born that way, for the reasons you've set out. It's more a wilful ineptitude, in the same way that whilst I enjoy fitness and sports, I have no interest in investing the time required to excel in any particular athletic pursuit. Casual cycling, running and yoga is sufficient for me. Writing however, both creative and technical contract drafting, is a joy. I take the point that the logic of technical writing particularly might translate well to mathematics, which is probably why I enjoy your videos (also, vsauce; amazing!), but I've no interest in ever plotting my own Brachistochrone, let alone making a race track following one to test the theory.

Peeking at the jack-in-the-pulpit... There's a bunch of it in the leaves behind my house. Something else there's been a ton of this year? Snakes. Garter snakes everywhere. My friend a few counties down from me in Indiana County had some rat snakes in her yard. Have you been noticing any extra snakes this year? As far as the weapon goes, what's a more classic weapon than putting something heavy and/or sharp at the end of a stick? As for the spud, isn't it so satisfying to make a tool that is actually useful? And even better for next to no cost! Thanks for the content pocket.
@pocket83squared
@pocket83squared 4 жыл бұрын
So far I've only seen one (live) snake this year: a big, Black Rat. He was in the middle of the trail during the hottest part of a hot day. I'm not too far from Indiana, so I'm guessing it was the early heat that made them move.

Hmmm, on the topic of whether the cherry log is really firewood: Does Cherry Spalt? I've seen Spalted Birch, and Spalted Maple, but not Cherry. I mean, everything rots, so I would think so, but maybe it's just not attractive, or maybe maple holds it's strength longer? Hmm.
@pocket83squared
@pocket83squared 4 жыл бұрын
They all do that eventually. After the log has been cracked open, I'll get back to you. In general, I don't like "spalted" wood. It's just a nice way to say 'half-fungaled.' Wonder if that's a word. I prefer solid; part of the art is to cure a piece of wood properly, that is, to try to find the sweet spot where its properties are best exploited. ... Anywho, my concern there was more about how hard the (somewhat dried) cherry would be to mill, since that log is still too fresh to have much (if any) rot. ... Now, as to why spalted cherry is not really a thing in popular woodworking-snob circles? [Pure speculation follows] Probably because it's perceived as being a bit low-brow. The ubiquitous Black Cherry covers the entire eastern half of The States, so I think it has just become low-culture from overuse. It seems like our beautiful Tulip tree suffers a similar stigma. Personally, those are two of my favorites, and Cherry *is* my favorite for burning. No others smell that nice when split, either. As is cures, it really does smell like candy. ... Have a nice weekend, Mr. Mulder ;)

@@pocket83squared personal preference... I happen to like spalted maple for the aesthetics of it. I know it's rotting, but I find plain maple to be often a bit bland, and the spalting can add some interest. I'm not sure I've ever smelled split cherry. Hmm. If you ever get a chance, check out yellowheart. Makes a really interesting spicy scent when fresh cut. Also unique in that it maintains it colour. No idea what the official latin name is.

No! It's too high to be practical. I would need to get a quad over it. If I were to make a bridge, it would be a simple straight span, with a truss-style triangular support from above. Compression on the triangles, tension on the rest. ... That's like, way, way in the future, though.

I have no idea why you won't upload some videos like these that are on this channel to your main channel. I guess you want to keep the high quality of the content in your main channel , or maybe sometimes you don't put much effort in a video so you automatically don't deem it worth enough for your main channel. Anyway you should consider that or promote your 2'nd channel mor, a lot of people who are subscribed to your main channel don't know about this channel and are missing on a lot of good content.
@pocket83squared
@pocket83squared 4 жыл бұрын
That's fine. I'm not doing this for high numbers. If I were, I would take a much different approach. Consider this video: if I wanted a higher view count, I would make it more energetic and enthusiastic--faster paced. I would sell the idea as though it were great, and I would edit everything to make it look easy and fun. I'd build suspense first with a teaser, and then with a slow tension that releases after the (sponsored) third quarter. I'd add fast-paced, quiet music. Use a tight edit with fast pan, GoPro-style. Add some friends in for feigned social appeal; you are now part of the party. The reveal would be quick, and then it's back to self-promotion. I would be patronizing, and act friendly. I would pretend to be your friend, beg you for your support, and seem to appreciate your view and feedback. ... Let the popular 'influencers' sell their spines for those numbers. As for me: I generate ideas related to fixing and building things, and I want to share those with people who are interested. This does not apply to the brainless masses that comprise the bulk of viewership on this medium. ... If that sounded nasty, it wasn't. I really do appreciate what you've just said. It's just my nature to remain as honest as I can; exaggerating just to sell you something is repulsive to me, and honesty just doesn't get you popularity. So here in my corner I will stay.
