Very nice explanation Greg. When in doubt go over kill on stuff then you know you won’t have to worry. It turned out great 👍

We used telephone and power poles for almost everything. Only time we didn't use them, was when we couldn't get them. Replace some with square posts over the years.. Now it's almost impossible to get used power poles here now.. one power co-op has a long list of people who want them... Pretty much impossible to get any from them. Our power company is so big, that state DEQ is all over them..if they replace a pole, they have to dispose of the old one in a hazardous materials landfill.. freaking stupid!! We've nailed and bolted all the beams. Usually nail a board under it to set it on and help support the weight. I like the idea of sheeting it.. a good felt or rubberized barrier and should never leak... So many things I'd do differently if I ever have to.. Looks great 👍😁

That is really neat, i just got some old telegraph poles last fall, might use a few to expand the lean on our barn, the rest will be wind break i think. that is a really nice building, you guys did a great job, great explanation. Thank you for the video!

You are under roof and out of the wind. It is a nice building We have used poles like you but we sawed the tops flat like you mentioned and set the headers on top . (Young guys with chain saws) Then we got a saw mill and squared the poles to 8x8’s because the young guys wanted it stronger oh well it turned out nice. I like the idea of sheeting behind the tin. Warmth is important. I want my animals to stay warmer l don’t think they eat as much that way. Nice explanation of building your structure

Nice looking barn, you should be proud. You did a great job squaring it up an leveling the frame. Like your posts. You can tell it was a labor of love. But "here it comes" Sorry but the entire load of your barn roof rafters, sheathing metal roofing floor plywood, all the hay placed up there is being supported only by the nails. instead of with the notching where the load would pass down through the posts to the ground.

Yes you’re correct but the load is not on only one set of boards. The roof has two different sets. My dad has built many pole buildings and they haven’t moved in 30 years. We also had a new pole building built professionally and the roof is supported exactly like we did ours. Seems to be fine. If you calculate the load over the whole area you’d be surprised on how little weight there is per nail. We used ringshank nails.

That is one nice looking building and I can see that it’s warm in there in the cold weather! ❄️ Have you filled it up with small square bales? How many bales can you fit in there? Again, that is one nice looking building! 👍😎

We will put more squares in this summer. I guess we never counted but the floor is 14 X 32’ so it holds a lot.
