Very sad. People will come and remove old barnwood for free. Burn the remaining wood after the good wood has been harvested. Those large timbers can be purchased at custom sawmills and they cost a lot of money. Many folks building their homes choose laminated beams when they learn how much single timbers cost.

Jim built a big ole barn in the 20's, took great care of it in western Illinois. Jim's grandson sold it to a company in New York for $54.000.00. All Jake had to do was knock it apart and load it on three flat bed trailers. ( Took him two weeks of vacation time)
@eriksimca94094 ай бұрын
that doesnt mean every barn ever built is worth money... not everyone has 2 weeks to knock down a barn and to load it all onto flat beds.... and why leave firefighters with just simulated fires to handle and not give them a chance at a real building fire..

We use to live on an old farm with a dilapidated 100 yr old barn, we'd remove wood from it and make antique furniture and sell it. A LOT of money could have been made off that old barn wood.
@MrMelonsz4 ай бұрын
That’s pretty cool. Chances are though, that the owners were old and had no interest in money. Nor the energy to make something new out of the barn. And judging by the immediate area, it’s obvious nobody would’ve taken the rights to the barn, even if for free.
@dochubbell Жыл бұрын
I too am sad to see such large nostalgic structures left to fall into disrepair due to it becoming way more expensive than it is worth to restore. Not only that, anyone with out buildings, (including barns), have to pay taxes on the buildings every year. If a barn is not in use, it is not financially beneficial to keep. When you have a huge old barn, they are not built to heat like today's livestock buildings. Most often too big, too drafty, and too cold in winter for the animals comfort. Sigh.......still sad as H. History burnt or bulldozed, or both. Won't be long when the only place you can see old wood barns in Amish country.

I hear so many folks verbalizing how this could have been saved or that could have been done. I see the fire department is in on this and I know for a fact that Fire departments use structures like this to give new firemen real training. Plus only the folks involved know how safe or not that structure was to try to attempt to save the lumber. I just am glad the barn burn was done by the firemen and that lots of good training probably was done that day.
