I'm not particularly an expert on Plymouth but most of those old engines that set for a long time lose compression like that, if you put a couple of teaspoons of gear oil in each piston it should give you enough compression to start it up, once you do that and run it through a few heat cycles you should get your rings back and have compression again.

It only takes about a spoon full of gas to prime the engine. Any more and you flood it. The low compression may because the excess gas washed the cylinders. Oil the cylinders and see if the compression improves.

Chevy's in my experience either start straight up quite easily or they are hell on earth. Had a '65 C10 283 that sat for 30 years, started up after new points, rotor plugs and was great. Then I had a '63 Impala SS 327 that sat for 25, did all the same stuff, it even had more compression, but the sucker is still fighting me after a month. I know they are near identical engines, but the 327's always give me a hard time for whatever reason.

Oh man, that growling starter brought back memories when I first started up my 58 Plymouth. I had this very similar situation, ran great and let it sit for months. No start. These don’t like sitting for long periods of time. Marvel mystery oil down the holes, clean and relube the starter (helps get more rpm’s out of it) and dribble in 2 cycle mixed fuel down the carb for starting, any mix is fine. Straight gas will just wash out your cylinders. Once it does run, try to get some heat cycles into it to help loosen/seal up the rings. Also might want to look into replacing that carb with the correct unit. The one currently in your car is off an early 1950’s Plymouth. It’ll work, but it’s not correct for the later model 230 flatty. Love the car as much as mine. Hope to see more of yours! Parts wise, Big M and Dave are the way to go! As well as the 1958 Plymouth FINatics group.

I agree with everyone else, add a little oil, Marvel, something to help seal the rings to get it started and then let it get up to temp. Get a few heat cycles into the motor and put her around the yard to get those rings moving again. I would like to see more on her and start getting those parts on the car like a brake booster and a new window.

Now we're talking! Finally a '58 Plymouth, the only classic american car I know quite well. Looking forward to watch that beauty come back to life. By the way: That's a 2dr Sedan, not a hardtop. It has a 2-speed powerflite automatic transmission, there was a 3-speed automatic available as well, called torqueflite + the basic 3-speed manual transmission. With that golden "V" in the grille she usually should be a 318cui V8 (or the V has been added at some point). Watch out, at some point she might even try to kill or hurt you...and I know what I'm talking about. Looks like she's a factory radio delete so at least you won't be surprised by a radio that will suddenly turn on and play music from the 50s. 😂 PS: Check out some of my older videos to see one of these. 😊

Maybe that's why the radio was deleted. I'd be sure there are no speakers of any kind. He also is doing the restoration wrong. All he has to do is step back and say "Show me" 😬

@@tammylott921 actually she was a mix of a Belvedere and a fury. They used both in different situations. And I believe that the coupe never came in red. @@tammylott921 Stephen King often used cars that didn’t actually exist in his stories. If I remember right, there was also, “From a Buick 8”. The way he describes that car as the specific year and model, it didn’t exist at the time.

I want to see more of it! Try some thick oil down the cylinders to help bump the compression up and try again. If it starts let it run and blow the cob webs away. It should help and free up the rings after a while. And keep it original! Love this car!

Try adding a little oil to each cylinder to get more compression to make it fire up. Maybe some heat in it will bring the rings back around.

Nice find! Just to fill you in on a few things, it’s not a hardtop, it’s a 2 door sedan. The hardtop roof is shorter and lower. This shares the same roof skin with a 4dr sedan. The pushbutton trans is a standard feature on every Chrysler product from 1956-64 unless it’s a manual car, or starting in the 60s, had a console shifter. Looking forward to the progress! Someone added the V to the grill which signifies a V8. Also added Belvedere roof trim

Yes, do that. That engine wouldn’t have fired and run as well as it did if it had 40psi compression. I think it has been washed out with fuel. Or, maybe a combination of that, and the ignition timing being out.

Thats a sweet find. For some reason the 2 dr sedans are harder to find than the hardtops. I remember a number of years back, Hotrod Magazine was trying to replicate one they had built back in the day as a racer or was it for the salt flats and as hard as they tried, they could only find hardtops. I dont know if they ever found a 2 dr post like yours or not, but they were trying to find a correct one that would eventually go into the Peterson Museum even after building a hardtop. If I remember right they were pretty much to the point of offering the bank account, the editors left arm, the authors first born, and the secretary for one.

I hope that you can get it running :D
