i am 69 years old living in east texas...i stumbled/fluttered through santa cruz, cali from 1973 to 1976....i think (must) have experienced some of this energy....left cali in 76 and bumped around america like in a pinball machine until i settled in the lone star state....i am so old i remember life before youtube....this medium is so awesome....the music, the memories, the accessibility to it....i love this country

Agreed. Check out him playing with Sweet Thursday... it's not "Mad Shirt Grinder"-ish, but top notch playing with Jon Mark (pre-Mark-Almond), Alun Davies, Harvey Burns, and Brian Odgers. Heard on KSHE, most popular song was Gilbert Street but there's great keyboard work throughout. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rsd4gdRqpsnbXWw.html

This is a treasure..... fantastic music.... How lucky for those of us who grew up in the Bay Area.... We had no idea we were making a mark in the history of music.... From Marin to Santa Cruz.... from the mountains to the sea... Sausalito , SF, Woodside, OMG - Apple Jacks and Boots and Saddle , the old Catalyst... It was surely a time in space we were blessed to experience... and for some... to survive.... John Cipollina and David Frieberg and Jerry , Neil ... you could see them every week at any given club or barn party..... ALOHA ALL MY BROTHERS and SISTERS....

Man, I lived in Hong Kong in the 60s & 70s and between 68-72, a young kid, and I attended the US International School there, and the older kids, 16/17/18, playing this kind of music and jamming like this, and it was hypnotic. It has stayed with me ever since, to my ripe old age of 63. It is just so pure.

I got play at these jams, they went late and were only interrupted when someone would come in and shout "there's a pheasant out near the gate"...everyone ran for the guns and massive gunfire erupted, 45s, 45-70s ...a few minutes later they would come back looking dejected, I'm like what happened? ...we missed. The jam would continue. A few would stay overnight and have breakfast joints at the picnic table. Spencer Dryden jammed frequently at these jams. Crosby would bring $100 of ammo and everything had holes out in the forest. New riders would jam with Garcia on pedal steel.

It's so cool to hear Nicki Hopkins summon the tribe around the fire with a swelling oefan, while Hart pounds the upbeat striving for hippie dream in Cippolina's Messenger-like hands. And the, at 5:20 Jerry arrives with the band at "Long Distance Rider", or where those riders rode and still ride here to the grateful ears that so wistfully wish to experience that time once again. 10:40 shows that almost drone-like driving thing that modulates down to the bottom end with Lesh. 14:20 reminds me of the basic riff that leads everyone toward a common center. 17:30 makes me think of Terrapin Station, which i think stood at the side track down the line, just in case there was need to dwell for awhile. 28:00 is an interim that resolves with the band crossing a field in late june. 31:00 reminded of the interplay between the individual and group voice, the synthesis is the result. The photo of Nicki Hopkins and Phil Lesh is great. I like the blank visual, but intense attention to that page that is better both heard and seen. Or to be both heard as seen, and seen as heard, as if they are the same Unity. 41:58. The messenger both departs & Returns. Thank you all, my friends.

@@jakes36 sick Im sorry I doubted you. I don't know much about Mickey's years isolated on that ranch other than the jam sessions. Im also sorry Ive not heard of your band. Are you guys on KZfaq? Oh wow lol, I got some ranch questions but Ill show restraint lol. But was it basically like a commune with quite a few people staying there at all times? And was everything spiked by Bear? Lol Im jk about the Bear thing, but that ranch had to be one epic scene. It seems like a memory you wouldn't be foggy about considering what legends alot of these guys are now considered. But if you played there frequently then that's a little different. This tape is great, its aimless but you can tell everyone is into it. Seems they all can't decide on the same thing lol.👍

They had a 2inch 16 track Warner Brothers gave them, it was a mess with little or no maintenance. Healy wasn't a pro and he left everything turned on for months at a time telling me " stuff breaks when you turn it off" the so called control room was about 105° in the summer. Because they never fixed the roof , you could see light through it. Pianos always were out of tune, headphones, mostly Sennheisers, were thrown everywhere across the floors, stepped on . Mickey's riser was at one end of the room backed with gongs and 12 foot log drums on both sides of the low stage. Usually 2 drum kits. Mostly lazy to put up mics and dial in. Hundreds of hours of tape were run. Almost nobody would listen back. Occasionally Garcia and Hart would listen through some to get song ideas. Playing in the Band came from a jam on a Zakir Hussein song called 10 step, for obvious reasons. Wasn't a very together studio but was OK for jamtracks.
