Around dawn on the Waterfront Trial, Washington Park Arboretum late November 2023.
Anytime anyone came within 50' or so, the owl would startle and fly away. I followed him for a bit but he eventually flew off into some trees and I lost sight of him.

The owl's odd behavior and blood makes me wonder if it flew into a window pane ~ an all-too common occurrence for birds. They don't see the glass, just reflection of trees and sky. If they hit hard enough, it could be fatal. I hope the owl is okay. I wonder if the crows could tell it wasn't well.

@@InsoIence sure. I'll copy my comment: "poor owl..... it has blood around its beak and its expression looks as if she's in pain... notice her eyes in the beginning of the vid, where she slowly turns. she also doesn't respond to a crow brushing her feathers while passing above her... i hope she'll recover... at least she could fly, so she'll probably recover. they never get this much blood from just eating, which is what worries me."

I'm wondering if the owl flew into a window pane. It's a common and often fatal event for birds if they hit the glass at speed. They see the reflection of trees and sky in the glass, and think they're flying into open space.

Crows do not have as much trouble with owls, they respect each other. On the other hand if this was a hawk, Kestrel or kite it would be very different out come, the crows would drive bomb it make the call and all corvids will protect there area and nests. If it was a big threat Magpies. Rook's, & Ravens will also help the cause. I've studied Crows for many years now and have wild pet crows i see daily i see them in there community. This was a polite warning to the owl to not to try anything as it is trespassing on Crows territory and if there was a fight there is 30 crows to one owl its a non contest (Hence the numbers of crows) and the owl showing no aggression at all.

Willing to confirm with anecdotal observation. There is an Owl that seems to nest near my house, in a major suburb of Seattle. The local crows pay no mind at all to his (or her) hoots. However, comma, I was out doing yardwork one day, and heard the shriek of a Hawk...

@richardthered
@richardthered 5 ай бұрын
@@JenniferPChung Its quite easy to be honest, its the same with most animals humans must offer food and time really. One of mine likes to sit on my shoulder and perch on the park bench with me. This is very rare for a wild Crow to act like this as i have put the time in with her since she was kicked out her nest and grounded. My shoulder gets all muddy from her feet so i don't let her sit there for long or make a habit of it as she will do her toilet on me at some point, peck my ear and will just flying up on my shoulder from behind, and it really makes me jump if I don't see her coming. They are without a doubt the most amazing birds & friends, extremely clever and very autistic in nature, they do have mood swings but 85% of the time adorable and gentle. My little friend tries to speak, I've been repeating Hello Hello for about 2 years and she makes a strange noise back its very funny, but she is trying. I would say about 1in5 Crows may be a bit more brave/curious than the others. They remember people faces and posture, kindness also (Monkey nuts Crows love). Crows that nest in woods or Forrest are much harder to get near. If you went to a park or similar the crows are more used to humans and noise etc and a local park would have resident Crows, so the chances of reseing the same Crow again would greatly increase, unless you was walking with a dog. Make sure you get the Crows attention and throw one monkey nut on the ground below them and walk away. Crows are shy and very cautious birds until they feel safe. Keep looking back to wear the nut was thrown, after about 15-20 metres the Crow if a curious one should fly down just to be nosey as there survival skills are unrivalled. Repeat this method on a Crow that has taken the nut and before you know it that crow after time will remember you and fly down right next to you after a few months. Their family will also begin to turn up, Mum, Dad, Brother Sister, cousins etc as they will want in on the free nuts too. then they except you and will call you to get your attention for a monkey nut, try to be repetitive where you put the nuts and the call you use for the crows attention is important. I use a generic cat call like a ticking sound, you could whistle or use a little bell, just something different for a sound for the crow to associate the sound with you and a free tasty snack. My crows know my car and fly along side it when i turn into the road they are on. They can recognise me from just my walk and posture from over 150 metres away, I've tried disguise before, hat different coat etc they are far to clever lol. They are extremely entertaining birds and very misunderstood.

And I think the crows were "testing" the owl to see if it could be scared (that might have triggered the crows to attack the owl), but I think the crows realized the owl was just comfortable being amongst them, and that's why they didn't peck at it in the least, because they were accepting of its presence.

Crows are omnivores. They can survive off of plants, insects, and meat. Owls are carnivores only as are all birds of pretty, and sadly only 1% of birds of prey survive beyond the 1st year. Most fail to successfully hunt enough prey to survive and end up landing and never being able to take flight again and die a very slow agonizing death by starvation or being picked off by another predator. For this owl to be sitting out like this in the open so far outside of its normal hunting hours (dusk and dawn) means its desperate for food. It’s actually very sad.

Despite the owl potentially injured, the crows want em out of their territory. The crows aren’t actively attacking, they’re trying to escort the owl out of the area. If they could speak human, they might as well be saying: Leave or FAFO.

From other videos I've seen Owls during the day. When they're attacked by other birds of prey they usually stay on ground level.

That peaceful owl was just trying to rest, cause in the middle of the night it will retaliate, crows are no match for an owl, owls are intelligent, crows are a loquacious

Been around birds too long. Some thing is off about this poor owl just by the way it is holding itself. Poor thing.

Barn owl is injured u can tell from its bloody face, crows know this and are waiting for a chance to attack and eat it. They do this with baby lambs and other animals as well. Ive even seen a crow eating an injured pigeon whilst it was still alive flapping around on the floor.

They aren't really competitor anyway. They don't compete for food, don't nest in the same areas. No reason to fight each other at all.

I'm not sure the crows are angry. They are very intelligent. Intelligent enough to know that the owl is interest in much bigger prey than themselves. They may be gathering around it for protection from bigger birds.
