Willem de Fesch (1687- 1761) born in Alkmaar, worked in Amsterdam and Antwerp. Johannes Albertus Groneman (1711-1778) born in Hamm Germany, came to Holland when he was 19, studied in Leiden and settled as a composer in The Hague. Johann Christian Schickhard (1682-1762) was a German composer and woodwind player with a link to the University of Leiden. Anton Wilhelm Solnitz (1708-1752) was born in Germany, but lived his entire musically significant life in Holland. He died in Leiden. Great music !

amisfitpuivk Then same complaint has been said of the Romantic Period. You might investigate the Cantatas of J S Bach, the Harpsichord Music of Pancrace Royer (Marche des Scythes or Vertigo) played by Yago Mahúgo, J S Bach's Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, or in the keyboardworks of his sons CPE Bach or WF Bach. The Romantic era composers felt a special kinship to the Baroque and felt the music of the Baroque period was closer in spirit to their works. Any effort expended investigating the era will be richly rewarded.

***** *Sigh* Its a strange feel of longing for a time i was not born in. Back when having good etiquette and rich vocabulary was seen as a virtue insted of a snobish trait like today. Back when Intelectual matters where the topic of conversations and not petty drunken experiences and "who banged who" last friday. Ahhhhh, I wish there was still a way to behave as a renaissance gentleman and not being seen as a freak roleplaying in real life. Sadly, today the only thing that seems to matter for most is to behave like a braging idiot and have no regard for the fine arts. Oh yes, one last thing i shall say for todays generation.... Its Carpe Diem, not YOLO. hehehe :)

Roosje Keizer The Vikings didn't just raid. The Danes ruled important sections of Frisia(modern day Netherlands) for much of the 9th century. Just look up Rorik of Dorestad. So there wasn't just rape. There was intermarriage and assimilation. So yes it can be said that the Dutch have some viking blood in them. However, the Frisians themselves were seagoing pirates very much like the Vikings - so really not much difference anyway.
@modernknightone
@modernknightone 8 жыл бұрын
Roosje Keizer Wow that's quite a stretch and accusation. I can assure you that I am not a muslim. Maybe you should study a little more history before you accuse me of watering down history. We have excellent proof from archaeology that the vikings developed their longships from the Frisian (Dutch) designs. This was likely from both raiding and trading BY the Frisians north. The Frisians did not keep good historical records as they were pagans. However we do know from what fragment that survive that the Frisian Warlord Hengist raided into Kent(England), conquered it and settled a great many Frisians (Dutch) there in the 5th century. In fact the great Old English poem Beowulf which is often attributed to the Vikings was in actuality a Frisian (Hetwarus tribe) story. We also know that the Danish King Horik in 839 complained to the Emperor Louis the Pious about Frisian raids against his territory. (AQDGM Bd. 2 p. 49). In 855, a Frisian sailor by the name of Ubbo (Ebbe?) with his ship raided Sheppey in the Thames estuary in 868, he made a solitary raid into Northumbria which was ruled by the Viking Danes at this time (Maritieme Geschiedenis der Nederlanden, 'Scheepvaart van het Noorden tot 1400' HPH Jansen, p. 79)

I think it's interesting to note some of the events which occurred during the time (1600-1750) Baroque Music was being written, appreciated and very well may have influenced some of those events. Shakespeare writes; Othello and The Tempest. Jamestown, 1st American colony founded. First slaves brought to America. Galileo invents the telescope. The Fork is introduced to American dining. Taj Mahal is built. Harvard College is established in the colonies. First opera house (Vienna). Aria and recitative become two distinct entities in opera. End of Thirty Years War. The overture as musical form emerges in two types, Italian and French. Minuet comes into fashion in French court. Johann Denner, invents the clarinet. BORN: Dietrich Buxtehude, Henry Purcell, Alessandro Scarlatti, Antonio Vivaldi, J.S. Bach, George F. Handel, Joseph Haydn. Louis XIV builds Versailles Palace. The Great London Fire. BORN: Rembrandt, Sir Isaac Newton, Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin, Catherine the Great, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock, Johann von Goethe. 1st formal Thanksgiving Day. The Thimble is patented. Witch hunts in Salem. Champagne invented by Dom Perignon. 1st organ built in the colonies, Philadelphia. Scotland and England join to become Great Britain. Vaudeville, popular musical comedies, appear in Paris. Handel's Water Music first performed on the Thames. Handel's The Messiah, oratorio. J.S. Bach's The Brandenburg Concertos. Count Volta, invented electric battery.

To me it is disrespectful to compare such great and talented individuals to the likes of Brittney Speares and Katy Perry. A song or an album from either of those two would not survive 100s of years and still be respected but Bach and Beethoven's music are science and would never perish. They are not commercial products like music from Perry and Spears.

Wonderfully deep, transports us to a better place. Can't think of any moderns who have bettered these "minor" Baroque composers. In the present Information Age we have so much to learn, actually relearn. We should have courage to accept that forgotten things, like this great music, are not worthless. It's just our flawed collective memories that have failed, sometimes misled by professional pettifoggers and professors who profess intimate knowledge but lack even a nodding acquaintance.

I agree. There was a retired music professor full of pomp who held a music class at the senior center. All the popular classical music that everyone is familiar with year after year and I finally asked him why didn't he teach Telemann the grandaddy of them all, it would be great and something different. He told me that people would not know who he was. I was floored and told him, then you should teach them. I said that if he would play Telemann I would come. He totally ignored me - that was good because I lost all respect for him and glad I never went to his boring classes. Thanks.

Prachtig.

HARTSTIKKE LEUK! Now that I live in the Netherlands it is wonderful to discover this part of the culture. I mostly know of the Golden Age of artists and paintings. And of course The Netherlands discovery and settling of the city of my birth NY. It really should be named again New Amsterdam because New York for me is much more Dutch and nothing of England. The English tried to erase the Dutch history but the truth won't remain silent. Ik kan meer of minder Nederlands praaten maar er te schriven is moeilijker. nog mals heel erg bedankt. Nu zal ik proberen om meer Nederlandse componisten te ontdekken

I visited New York about 2 weeks ago. I had a copy in my hand of a street map of New Amsterdam from around 1660 and I was pleasant surprised (beside the high building) that New Amsterdam has hardly changed. Within meters I was able to visualize where the Dutch castle and mill once were standing, the house of Peter Stuyvesant, the houses, the fences, the cannons on the Walstraat, and so on. Most fascinating. In the park near Staten Island Ferry there's a bronze 3D street map with all the tiny houses. Very impressive.

I never realized how beautiful the oboe is! Before I discovered this music, and Purcell, I had listened to an oboe player discussing obe, English horn ( or cor anglais), and thinking why does someone become an oboe player? I had never heard any popular classical music where the oboe played the melody. It's so hauntingly beautiful. I heard The plaint by Purcell and I was floored.

It would be handy to learn that not all music dating from this period is to be played rigidly in strict tempo.Rubato as viewed as a 19th- century device was actually in vogue from about 1600!Which suggests that it was used to allow the musicians to lean on certain notes, nobly assisted by the continuous presence of the appoggiatura to delay arriving on the printed note. As much as this was implied rather than written out, so the same applied to use of judicious rubato, as this recording delightfully demonstrates. The music itself is not from the Low Countries, but reflects styles and genres found all over 18th century Europe.Thus it belongs to no-one and everyone. A beautiful recording!Alistair
