Thank you sir on sharing the information and knowledge that you have gathered throughout your life, dealing with building firearms as well as loads and reloading them. For someone of your years and I say this with the upmost respect sir. To be willing to sit down and pass this information on to as many of us shooters, hunters, and sportsmen and women who are and have been looking into these same issues and finding nothing. Well we say thank you Mister Randy, sir for your time, and your knowledge. And for having the ( BALLS ) to stepup and put it out there for us all who know you are talking from truth. Thank you sir and God Bless you and yours.

Randy, you know I do very much enjoy your instruction videos and I try to follow the wisdom of a man with a lifetime of knowledge, regardless of the topic That is why I'll take your word over my own experiences about new barrels. Until now, I had decided against the break-in of my new barrels. This is because I have had some luck with barrels I didn't break in. But it just so happens that I have a new barrel that I am going down to the sand-pit with and I will follow your advice and do the break-in. We will see how things progress. Thanks again and sorry for the late post. Better late than never. Happy Father's Day this Sunday!!!

My apologies for my previous comments if I sounded less than polite.since then I bought a savage axis in 6.5 creedmoor.when I first started shooting it the best I could get out of it was an inch and a quarter at 100yds.now after shooting it a hundred times or so it suddenly started getting broke in.now with the same loads its shooting half inch groups at 100 yds.it is even doing three quarters of an inch with Remington factory loads. This was what my experience has been.i guess there are more than one way to get there. One thing I've learned in over 50 years of shooting is two perfectly knowledgeable shooters can get different results with same equipment or technique. That don't make sense on one hand but I've seen it too many times.many thanks,you've helped me much.

Thank you again Randy This is very helpful and informative. I believe this plays into giving the new barrel a cooling down period with cleaning in the schedule for a 3 shot string. Cleaning can’t hurt and will give your barrel the break it needs vs shooting a box of twenty and cleaning when you get home.

Sometimes in the shooting world something comes along that is a game changer . If you want to break in a barrel no fuss no screwing around clean the barrel as best you can getting all copper out. A factory match grade barrel blank obviously has never been fired therefore no copper or fouling. Load some powder coated projectiles 60 rounds or so and fire them . Don’t worry about accuracy. We are talking cast bullet velocities no more than 1400fps to polish the barrel. Refer to Lyman Cast Bullet manual use a fast burning powder. Powder Coat has a extremely fine polish compound and this is what will mirror your bore. Never hunt with a clean bore. If your bore is clean fire two rounds into the bank with the same ammo you will hunt with this will “cure” the bore for an accurate first shot on game.

Thank you Randy for your information, But my take on breaking in a barrel is a little more simple. I ve shot a lot of years and it's important to clean your guns and often, after a few shots I use a bore snake giving the barrel time to cool down between shots. That gives you time to study your next shot anyway, I've never had a rifle that was not accurate out of the box, but then I buy good rifles. Never overheat the barrels ever, it's not necessary and your overall accuracy will be better and your barrel will last longer. Shoot it clean it and get the best from it for many years, it's not a diabetic !

I often wonder how you can make a barrel from a blank of Stainless, cut the rifeling with tools that can actually cut the stainless and then shoot some brass and lead down through the same barrel and think your going to actually do anything to the stainless barrel. Hiw many rounds do you have to have down range to shoot out the barrel anyway?

There was an old barrel maker by the name of Bo Clerke who mentioned that barrels are broken in after the first shot and that elaborate brake in procedures were just costly and uneccessary, especially in quality lapped barrels.. I've heard this from others who know metallurgy better than I do and I would agree with their consensus. Even so, what Mr. Selby is doing in a break in isn't exactly wrong, if you take the premise that he's building load data and observing how his rifle performs as he advances in 1/2 grain increments. I agree with most here that once you drive a bullet down a bore that barrel is broken in and nothing internally is changing, only wear as round count continues. But there's no doubt that Mr. Selby is verifying load/data as he's getting to know his new barrel. I get what he's trying to accomplish, and appreciate and thank him for taking the time to at least explain his methods.

Small groups are all about consistency. If the first shot is from a clean bbl the next shot is likely to be different. I catch myself striving for all the accuracy I can get and am disappointed if a gun or load is not very accurate but I dont know why. I hunt heavy woods and thickets and most or my shots are under 50 yds. I would not suffer one whit if my rifles all shot 3 in groups at 100 yds.

I shoot Krieger match barrels and have talked to John Krieger regarding break in. For the most part it's very simple. First shot is breaking it in, second is wearing it out. Also, not all barrels are created equally. Depending on whether it's buttoned or hammer forged will tell you how many shots it will take to plate and "break in" a barrel. You WANT to leave some copper fouling on the surface...do NOT scrub it clean. Also, stick with 3-5 shot groups and allow it to cool. I bring a 10lb bag of ice to rest it on to speed it all up. As with breaking in rebuilt engines...there are many variations. Most have their own specific method but there's really no "best" way. That said...there ARE some very WRONG ways, but use common sense and it's not too difficult just a bit time consuming.

And there is such a thing as over cleaning , which I learned with a 338LM and it took 30 bucks in ammo to get that rifle shooting again! EVERYTIME I cleaned it . Every barrel is different, they are like people.

Thank you for your comments. The head shooter at Remington recently shot many hundreds of rounds through a .308 without cleaning and accuracy actually improved until several thousand rounds were fired then accuracy fell off and a good cleaning was required. That was more rounds than nearly any deer hunter would shoot in the entire life of the gun. You and I are in the same camp.

I'd say you're correct. If a barrel is good why would it need to be shot a bunch in order to shoot well? Not to mention that break in is basically physically impossible because a copper jacket can't abrade a heat treated steel barrel. What does verifiably abrade a barrel and change how it shoots is flame cutting at the throat of the chamber. Depending on the load/cartridge and your expectations barrel life for long range shooting may vary from a few thousand rounds to as low as 700 in certain cartridges. High pressure and steep shoulder angles are supposed to increase the effect of flame cutting. I don't know why someone would want to shorten the life of their barrels physical accuracy chasing imaginary increases to physical accuracy. It is most likely any perceived gain occurring from break in is due to muscle memory of the user and practice making them more accurate rather than the gun more accurate. I guess it's also possible in theory that copper fouling could fill in a rough barrel but in practice most usually that just makes them less accurate.

Are you slow? You can not "re-break-in" anything. It does not matter of it is a barrel or an engine. You only get a short time to break in anything. Breaking-In just means a period of accelerated wear and tear or put another way it is the finish machining that should have been done before you bought the "insert mechanical object here". Copper Alloys which the bullets lead core is jacked in is softer than the steel the barrel is made from. So no amount of jacketed bullets can ever wear out or break-in a barrel. The hot gases and friction from the powder is what wears out a barrel. Think about it you can not cut granite with bronze tools and steel is much tougher, durable and harder than granite. Clean and oil your grandfathers rifle and that is all you can do. How many times do you recon you can "break-in" a barrel even if it was possible. Lapping is a sign of really antiquated machining it is the opposite of precision. Lapping is a means of making up for poor surface finish and old worn out machines and tooling.

I don't agree with the 3 shots cleaning, 3 shots cleaning and clean clean again non-sense. Don't heat up the barrel with hot strings. Bore sight in you rifle at home, take a box of 20 to the range, and sight it in starting at 25-50 yards. If your barrel is heating, let it cool off. Then take the rifle home and clean it as you normally would and put it in your safe. If the gun manufactures wanted you to break in their barrel like Randy says, they would outline the procedure in their instruction manual, which I have never yet seen.

Yes your barrel will slightly change point of impact from a bare steel, brand new barrel, to a copper fouled one...That being said, dont be afraid to clean your barrel either. After about 10 rounds it should be consistant again, and most people cant tell a huge difference depending on range of course....Example, if your a hunter hunting like 300 yards and in, you wont see much difference...If you a military sniper where headshots may be needed at extended range, than you need to be aware of this

50 Stitches Steel Its paper season lol- The point I’m trying to make is copper fouling is it not an issue to worry too much about to a point after break in. Copper fouling does not matter to snipers, F1 guys and marksman like myself that enjoy taking and long range shots, by year to year I mean the data that I have used the previous year of shooting which had The same conditions- which i shoot about every other weekend at these ranges cold as Fuq or hot as heck at this point in my life- the main things I looked for temperature humidity and Chrono velocity’s for the effects these conditions had on my powder... at least that what I did in the past. The hornady app is the bomb with consistent powders such as imr 8133 which a staple powder for me anymore since it came out and a weather station that has blue tooth link to sync my phone, I only have to take a few fouling shot to check speed then it’s off to the races. I only have to come 56-64 moa on most days from my 300 yrd zero. I’m not suggesting shooting game at these ranges in any way. The best group I’ve had was only 12inch with 8 shots landing on paper and two flyers due to changes in the valleys wind. The longest shot I’ve taken on game is 550 yrd on white tail, I don’t thing I would ever push my range farther then this without something special happen and me having my 18lb rifle in the mountains lol that’s never happening.

Do factory rifles come broken in? How many rounds go threw said companies barrel?
@sdvten
@sdvten 5 жыл бұрын
Not usually. Probably lucky if most rifles see 5 rounds before being sent out the door. Depends on the price point of the rifle and the manufacturer. A rem700 DM Mountain Rifle (not the cheapest 700 out there) I have had such a rough bore from the factory I had to fire lap it. Otherwise you could never get all the copper out of it and it coppered up excessively even at a low round count.

Interesting. So assuming its about 65 rounds to work up a load and break in a fresh barrel, and taking this information in conjuntion with another video in which he says a barrel realistically starts loosing accuracy around the 300 round mark, not 2000 rounds like many say, we can be aware that weve spend a pile of cash for a highly accurate tool in which the realistic accurate service live is around 240 rounds after break in and load work before we start going downhill. We use nealry 1/4th of our accurate life just developing that accurate load. Its a wonder people have been able to learn the most accurate load when you consider all the details of brass, primers, various powders, seating depths, chasing the lands, bullet weights and respective ogive shape in relation to distance from the lands etc. A few hours plinking, and all the costs factored in to shoot and reload and get to a range or field and so on. Just interesting to sort of think about.

I find it interesting, that people who don’t believe in breaking in a barrel, somehow find the need to watch this & comment. Why ? Do the feel they are enlightening us poor barrel break in folks ?? When every barrel manufacturer & every quality gun builder says, “Break in your Barrel” I guess I’m breaking in my barrel. Not listening to some character commenting negatively. Besides, I like shooting, working up loads & getting to know my rifle, so why not. Don’t break in your barrels ?? Most of my guns will shoot 3/4" or better with my handloads. I have rifles in 300 RUM, 7mm Rem, 270, 25-06 and 22-250 that all shoot 1/2" or better and I have never 'broken-in' the barrels. I'm not disagreeing with Randy, but I am saying shooting 50-60 rounds through a hi-power rifle in order to break has never been necessary in my case. I spent 12 years in the Army and we never broke in barrels either.

People that dont break in a barrel because they think it doesnt need it dont really know much about rifles. You might just own rifles that shoot like crap. You need to smooth out the inside of the barrel and prevent copper fouling before it builds up or becomes a problem. If you own a muzzle loader just shoot it several times without cleaning it. Thats the same that happens to a rifle barrel just amplified.

I never break barrels in at all. I just shoot them. I’m not too picky about cleaning either. I only ever use nylon bristle brushes and patches. I never use phosphor bronze brushes, I never use stainless steel, I never use harsh solvent, I never use anything with ammonia in it, and I never completely remove the copper fouling from any of my firearms barrels, pistols or rifle. The only thing I use is BreakFree CLP, the same stuff I used when I was in the military. Some of my firearms require grease as a lubricant so I use that after I use the CLP for cleaning. My rifles shoot sub MOA and they’re ultra reliable. I believe just shooting rounds through the barrel will pretty much fix any microscopic problems and imperfections in the rifling. I don’t worry about it. I don’t reload either but I do pay attention to ammunition lot numbers. I pay attention to variations and point of impact shifts. All these snake oil, voodoo break in rituals are completely unnecessary. If the barrel was any good, they wouldn’t be needed. All you need is good ammo. I don’t use a bore scope. I’ve never had access to one. I don’t believe in break in periods for rifles because of my experience in the military. I’ve had some DMR (Designated Marksman) training and I’ve served in that role. We never had the luxury of highly specialized rifles, custom ammo, custom barrels, or the time to work up custom loads. Most of the time. You got an “accurized” rifle with an optic that was a little bit better than your squad mates and you were expected to make precision shots with it. Paying attention to your ammunition lots between missions to avoid variations was about the best you could do. The optic helped make deadly precision shots at range to conserve ammo, shots my squad mates couldn’t. So no. You don’t need to break in a barrel. Just shoot your rifle. Shoot it a lot. The real key to precision rifle shooting is having consistent ammo. That’s why the lot members were so important. Observe the point of impact shifts between your optic and your ammo between lot numbers and make adjustments. Pay attention to things like the temperature of your barrel and pay attention to the temperature of your ammo too. Your ammo will shoot different if it’s been laying out in the sun and it gets hot versus staying in your ammo pouches or in shade.

If a barrel is properly smoothed up at the factory no breakin is needed. I've seen properly finished barrels shoot one hole groups on day one and the worst case three inch groups when new. Then after a couple hundred rounds smoothed out the burrs it would shoot one hole groups. If you hear someone say always what follows is almost certainly wrong. The exceptions pop up their ugly head.

Your first shot is the barrel break in. Any burrs left on the metal will either be there for good or get ripped out in that first couple shots..No need for this old time ritual that may have been a thing decades ago. Now companies do a good job of getting burrs out of the bore before selling you the barrel....Grey hairs don't automatically mean wisdom guys. You have to understand why "barrel break in" was even a thing before you recommend doing it....The only difference is a "clean" bore, or a bore with copper fouling in it which could slightly change point of impact. Run about 10 rounds through your barrel after cleaning and get your hard zero. That's it, ready to operate or hunt

I can't say necessarily what is right for everyone, but I'd dispute cleaning it every three rounds, especially if you're only shooting a three shot group. Personally I'd make sure it's been thoroughly cleaned, fire a couple of shots, which you can use to get an approximate zero after bore sighting, then only use very carefully aimed three shot groups to get some loads configured that show promise. Once you know the loads are safe, and likely to yield good accuracy, do some very careful 5 shot groups, with a couple of minutes rest between each shot. At the 5 shot group stage, you should be close to where you're at on COL, if not powder charge. Once I've settled on what I'd regard as a near maximum load, back off slightly, get your COL right, then powder charge, and finally, if you can be bothered, the primer. Obviously the brass needs to be of decent quality, and of the same make. That's how I do it, but nevertheless, excellent advice.

Total BS. To quote Gale McMillan: This is total hogwash! It all got started when a barrel maker that I know started putting break in instructions in the box with each barrel he shipped a few years ago. I asked him how he figured it would help and his reply was If they shoot 100 rounds breaking in this barrel that's total life is 3000 rounds and I make 1000 barrels a year just figure how many more barrels I will get to make. He had a point it defiantly will shorten the barrel life. I have been a barrel maker a fair amount of time and my barrels have set and reset bench rest world records so many times I quit keeping track (at one time they held 7 at one time) along with HighPower,Silloett,smallbore national and world records and my instructions were to clean as often as posable preferably every 10 rounds. I inspect every barrel taken off and every new barrel before it is shipped with a bore scope and I will tell you all that I see far more barrels ruined by cleaning rods than I see worn out from normal wear and tear.I am even reading about people recommending breaking in pistols. As if it will help their shooting ability or the guns. Gale Mc.”

How to break in a barrel, SHOOT the gun. From the very first shot the barrel is wearing, anything you do will not change that, most barrels settle down after so many shots and accuracy improves, clean your barrel when accuracy degrades, besides that just shoot the damn gun and quit wasting time and ammo trying to perform magic on steel.
