Wondering if cutting off half of the root system has any visible effects on the cactus after repot? I imagine it grows more slowly for the next few months as it builds roots back up

You are correct. The plant will focus its energy on regrowing its root system, so foliage growth will be halted or slower. The plant will pick back up again in no time though. I prune the roots of my plants every year with no ill effects. I can’t afford to keep up-potting, nor is it practical. I don’t want a 20” pot in my home. 😆

Wrap some thick paper around the spines if you have to handle it. Like bubble wrap postage parcels are best.
