People crack me up when they say barrel racing looks easy. You stay on a horse runing with all their heart turning around a barrel. Its a sport like anything else that takes passion love and dedication
@franknewton5943 жыл бұрын
Anyone saying something like that has never seen a horse much less riden one. These ladies are bad ass.

when i was 6 years old my dad took me to my first rodeo when i watched the cowgirls run their horses around the barrels i promised him that i would do that one day and i'd be dang good too! he died when i was 11 and im now 13 i kept my word and 6 months after his death i taught myself and my OTTB mare how to barrel race. He would be very proud now, of his lil 'bug' Barrel racing kept my mind off the tragic lost of my dad, Barrel racing saved me.

@@horselover1228 so why do you call yourself a horse lover? Shouldn’t you be called horse abuser? Kicking and whipping is NEVER EVER okay, it doesn’t matter how hard it is! When a horse only does things when you are giving them pain to do so, then it’s abuse. As simple as that. Educate yourself.
@horselover12282 жыл бұрын
@@diemeckerei3021 educate yourself, i betcha you have never ridden a horse, they are made for these sports!! And besides they don’t normally use spurs while kicking it’s just to push them around the barrel

Any advice for motivating a lazy horse? I have a QH who could be an amazing barrel racer, but he won't go faster than a canter unless you really force him. (I've used a crop and dressage whip but never spurs so that might be an option?) I've seen him gallop before in the pasture and he's really fast when he wants to be, so I know he can... Mind you, I do have another who's really motivated and "fast" is generally the only gear he works in. XD
@almika3609 жыл бұрын
Ginger Robson if he doesn't want to run on his own he probably wont ever be any faster, barrel horses run like mad because they are excited if he's not excited by barrels and doesn't want to run you can whip and kick him all you want but he will probably just turn into a butt head to deal with at the gate because he will relate the arena and barrels to being wacked all the time... My advice is that if your horse doesn't have the want to do it maybe find a different job for him and a new prospect. Just my thoughts when I'm training barrel horses, best of luck

@Deathkitty123456 Barrel racing is riding. Everyone has a different style of riding. But barrel racing is not all yanking,kicking, and hitting. It is about trust between horse and rider. We take great care of our horses to make sure that they are safe. Everything we do while riding is not mean or hurtful to the horse. It is encouragement. And the horses love it just as much as the riders. Just because we don't ride like you do, doesn't mean that we are wrong or that its not real riding.

Altogether it does not looks that there is a harmony between rider and horse. I think there is a good reason for the prohibition of this sport in some party of Europe. But I have a Question: Do the riders only ride their horses in this way, for example in the training? Or is it also important to gymnasticate the horse? elementary definitions like: Contact, Relaxness, collected Canter..
@softballboo893211 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the horse. and booting them? is kicking. and some horses you have to use spurs on its just that simple. i have 2 horses that you well get more than what you want if you put spurs on their sides and one that you ride with or with out spurs

thanks i never thought about it that way, i guess i was just thinking about what me and my friends do;/ oh and in training and stuff ya we do practice like contact, relaxness, and collected canter. we dont push our horses like that when we are just training/practicing because we dont want our horses to think that they have to make a hard out run EVERY time they go into an arena;)

There was actually a study done that showed excessive kicking and whipping into, through and out of a pattern (barrel racing, pole bending, etc.) can cause the horse to slow down as it is more worried about when it's going to get kicked or whipped next instead of focusing on the job at hand. Kicking is okay when a horse shoulders out along with a kick or whip going into and going out of the arena, but nothing more otherwise the horse does slow down. It's minute, but you can see it happen if you really watch.

yes and even if it doesent hurt(which I know it does, their skin is that thin, that they notice it, when flies are landing on their skin) if it doesnt hurt it mus be still so degrading when someones sitting on my back and kicking shit out of me! These people simply forgot that they are horses not toys which we are using and abusing... horses are so sensitive in their minds, in their physics... I always thought we are trying to convince the horses, that we are actually their friends but when I look at these Videos horses are actually right in first place... we ARE their greatest enemies and believe me if someone would kick the shit out of me, I certainly wouldnt be your friend... and no im NOT an english rider I want the best for my horse so I try to teach my horse all important exercises out of all kinds of discipline but I also understand that my horse is a horse in first... and a friend indeed and Im greatful that she´s with me, that she follows me and I dont even have to ask her and I know that its a privilege to sit on her back, so you should start thinking about that and stop commenting because you feel hurt in your ego that english riders treat their horses incorrect... so about whom is this discussion? about the riders? NO you should look at the HORSES you should treat them like horses and I dont only say that towards barrel racers I say that to ALL of you english riders western riders, Iberian riders... EVERYBODY and as soon as it comes down to equestrian sport everywhere you can look at horse abuse but you all have a voice you all look at these sports and you all applaud after the presentation instead of actually start thinking about the one who plays the starring role guys its the HORSE...!
@TukikoIsolde8 жыл бұрын
Ambera Candis Very true. One thing I hear riders who do excessively kick and whip is something along the lines of, "we don't/we can't just sit there." When in truth your horse probably does want you to stay quiet so that they may do their job while at the same time as a rider you really don't sit there (unless you have a horse that will do the barrel pattern on its own with no rider and still come out with a great time and pattern then you just sit quietly and let the horse do the work), but you never sit there as you have to adjust yourself and your horse for the turns, sit through the turn to help the horse, plan ahead through your ride, judge your horse's speed (tap on the butt for a speed boast or slight pressure on the reins for a decrease in speed), etc. To go through your ride "loud" is very distracting and it does not allow you to set yourself or your horse up properly.

Keep in mind that most of these spurs are blunt or rounded, and when used right set your horse up for a correct turn. But if I was continually having that much impact on my sides my stride would shorten in an attempted self-defense. Sadly in all disciplines, there are riders who don't think about their horses as more than athletes.

I don't agree with the spurs, but that's my opinion, a crop however is a perfectly normal way to have better control of your horse, I use one personally after three times asking for what I want without it, then I add a tap (nothing to hard) of the crop so the horse knows that that's what I want it to do no excuses. Please don't hate on me because you don't agree with my oppinon, I do love horses dearly, I have ridden them for a long time, and I would probably die before I intentionally hurt my horse, or put him in harm's way.

It really depends on the size of the arena and the pattern, I think. I don't know the specific measurements for the standard pattern, but I think if you compare yourself to others on a standard pattern that should give you an idea of where your at. I believe that it doesn't matter how fast you are. It just matters that you have fun and feel like you do your best. :)

and if you think all that barrel racing is just about kicking and whipping, you are also wrong. in barrel racing you also have to know every stride and thought that goes through that horse, if you dont you are going to blow every barrel. that horse has to trust you enough to know that dirt its running on is safe and isnt going to make them slip and fall, even though that does happen that horse is counting on you to make sure that he/she will be alright. -
