This week, the Hawaiian Islands were battered with days of 40mph storm winds, massive waves, torrential rain and even hail. With the weather finally clearing, Mason Ho grabs his trusty '96 Fish from ...Lost Surfboards and runs down to Waimea Bay to catch the river overloaded and ready to blow.
Always Listen to the lifeguards and Merry Christmas everyone!
Surfers: Mason Ho, Jamie O'Brien, Dylan 'Muddy' Graves
Filmers: Rory Pringle

I was there in 2014, and we saw the river come to life as guys dug it out. We didn’t see it get quite this big, but it was just so cool to watch the standing waves form and guys go in.

a lot of rain accumulates upstream above Waimea Falls. the river mouth isn't open, so the water collects until it's about to overflow. sometimes people will dig with shovels to connect the river to ocean, this time it didn't take much effort to break it open with the rivermouth almost touching the shoreline. we also had 15ft waves this day that were battering the shoreline. madness!
