Barrett's Privateers but you're a broken man on a Halifax pier

As everyone else walks along on two functional legs, you sit by a Halifax pier and remember the battle that took your legs, smashed Barrett and the sickening sloop that was once called The Antelope.
Once again, I don't own any of the audio in the video, I simply mixed together sounds I found on KZfaq. I made the thumbnail in Photoshop.
'Barrett's Privateers' was made by Stan Rogers. There are a few versions of it on KZfaq but the one I used for this video can be found here: • Barrett's Privateers
Thank you very much to Nolan Waters, AmigoRoberto, Kenneth Schlegel, Nolan Zona, Andres Cardona, and lastly Justin Hall for recommending Barrett's Privateers!
I know, how can he use a crutch if both of his legs are gone? Good question, I suppose he can't - I'll be honest, I forgot that both the protagonist's legs are blown off when I made the thumbnail. Imagine he has two peg legs and that there's another crutch lying next to him!

@@Lepper36 fun fact about the main truck: The "truck" is referring to rigging at the top of a mast, which means the mast fell over from the first cannonball (likely being what smashed Barrett). the funny thing is, on a stoop (the type of ship the antelope was) there is only one mast. As such, there is no "main" truck, because there is only one mast to have the rigging on.

I'd just like to point out that the US never signed the 1856 Paris Declaration that abolished privateering and that issuing letters of marque is still technically legal under the Constitution. So, while you may never get to cruise the seas for American gold, the possibility still exists that you could sail the seas for Chinese gold with an American letter of marque.

Stans voice breaks up when he sings louder much like an electric guitar distorts when pushed hard through an amp. It makes the story that much more believable, as though he himself harbors the anger at the lies he was told when Barret recruited him. Amazing artist. I remember feeling like a broken man on my last day of college: I walked out of a test I knew I would only barely pass, and had submitted the worst paper of my academic carrier that morning. I wasn't good enough to go to grad school, and I suspected that I had seen how the public education system grinds down school teachers, so I basically had no direction in my life. I found a bench on the quad and as a 1000 yard stare quickly developed, all I could do was wonder what happened to that bright, happy, kid who was always gushed over by all his teachers. They always said he had such a promising future...

Oh, the year was 1778, HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW! A letter of marque come from the king, To the scummiest vessel I'd ever seen, God damn them all! I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold We'd fire no guns-shed no tears Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier The last of Barrett's Privateers. Oh, Elcid Barrett cried the town, HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW! For twenty brave men all fishermen who Would make for him the Antelope's crew God damn them all! I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold We'd fire no guns-shed no tears Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier The last of Barrett's Privateers. The Antelope sloop was a sickening sight, HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW! She'd a list to the port and and her sails in rags And the cook in scuppers with the staggers and the jags God damn them all! I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold We'd fire no guns-shed no tears Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier The last of Barrett's Privateers. On the King's birthday we put to sea, HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW! We were 91 days to Montego Bay Pumping like madmen all the way God damn them all! I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold We'd fire no guns-shed no tears Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier The last of Barrett's Privateers. On the 96th day we sailed again, HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW! When a bloody great Yankee hove in sight With our cracked four pounders we made to fight God damn them all! I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold We'd fire no guns-shed no tears Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier The last of Barrett's Privateers. The Yankee lay low down with gold, HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW! She was broad and fat and loose in the stays But to catch her took the Antelope two whole days God damn them all! I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold We'd fire no guns-shed no tears Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier The last of Barrett's Privateers. Then at length we stood two cables away, HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW! Our cracked four pounders made an awful din But with one fat ball the Yank stove us in God damn them all! I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold We'd fire no guns-shed no tears Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier The last of Barrett's Privateers. The Antelope shook and pitched on her side, HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW! Barrett was smashed like a bowl of eggs And the Main trunk carried off both me legs God damn them all! I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold We'd fire no guns-shed no tears Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier The last of Barrett's Privateers. So here I lay in my 23rd year, HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW! It's been 6 years since we sailed away And I just made Halifax yesterday God damn them all! I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold We'd fire no guns-shed no tears Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier The last of Barrett's Privateers

I relate to this song a lot. I know how it feels to have your life irreparably damaged from a decision that seemed good at the time, especially with coercion from others. And then you feel stuck, as if there's nowhere else for your life to go. A broken man.

That feeling when you set sail on the Antelope (the scummiest vessel you've ever seen, a sickening sight even) on the day of the king's birthday in 1778 with a crew of 20 brave fishermen now know as "Barrett's Privateers" after receiving a letter of marque to plunder American ships for their gold, hoping to fire no guns and shed no tears only to engage a Yankee hove (against which your cracked 4 pounders were of little use) that you chased for 2 whole days and have your captain smashed like a bowl of eggs and your legs crushed causing you to, in fact, fire guns and shed tears, only to be washed up on a Halifax pier six years later, a broken man wishing that he was in Sherbrooke, the last of Barrett's privateers. I hate when that happens.
