I grew up in Bristol. When we were kids we used to say to each other . You need to be in Barrow Gurney, but i never knew where it was. Where is it please .

Sadly it's not still standing it was completely demolished many years ago to make way for new dwellings now its just a sad memory

Harry Arnold parts of it is still there but it's no so interesting,I'm went a few weeks ago and they are turning it into houses

It was NOT a "Mental Asylum", it was a PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL - a caring friendly place built and run on the ideal and principle of a "THERAPUTIC COMMUNITY". I hate these videos showing it in a sad derelict state. I was a nurse at Barrow Hospital from 1967-71 and have lasting memories of it as homely, gentle and not in any way spooky or sinister.

I was a medical student at Barrow in 1971. We may have met. I was given free accommodation in return for suturing patients who had cut themselves. I had a room in Woodland House. The architecture was practical.
