Some say that the tracks run to the west across Walney Island to a place few have visited. A place of legend.
@onanysundrymule3144
@onanysundrymule3144 3 жыл бұрын
Haha, yes, well they did run to the West as far as Barrow Island via the Buccleuch dock lifting bridge (which I also know as Woodbridge Haven), according to current documented evidence. It will be interesting to find out just how much further to the West they ran when "the Legend" is fully peer reviewed, confirmed, and accepted as gospel into learned circles.

On Any Sundry Mule some sources would say to almost 20 miles away from the Isle of Mann. Some sources are more conservative than others. In certain circles, it is estimated that there are as many as four gauges in use.

A friend of mine has been inside the station building and told me the platforms are still intact (a few years ago now). The old OS maps are available on line if you can stand not having paper in hand. Thanks for a fine insight into old Barrow.

Oh wow, thank you so much for your story. Did you start there in 1960 as an engine cleaner, or did you mean to say your father did Sir? I wonder if the chimney at the head of Rawlinson Street (ie in the triangle) was still standing at that time. Kind regards.

The waste land opposite Barrow's first & second hospitals of School Street which was the third and giant North Lonsdale Hospital as viewers may remember was Barrow's first public park of beauty. There was a small lake and bandstand in this park. It stood next to small wooded area known as Rabbit Hill. Which was a copse of natural forest that stood where St Georges Church was built and the slated outbuildings that remain today. It was called Rabbit Hill after the small copse being known as a hunting ground / natural habitat for our wild rabbits. My Great, Great Grandparents lived at number 16 Salthouse Cottages back in 1872.

Marvellous knowledge and interest you have Sir, fantastic. I will have to dig out some old maps and we see if this detail (the park and lake) was lucky enough to get get recorded on paper, or indeed mentioned textually in J.Fisher's book 'Popular History of B-in-F' 1891. Yes, I have heard of this area as formerly being Rabbit Hill, overlooking the then tidal channel running between here and Barrow island. At that time your grt grt grandfather would likely have been a shipbuilder, railway man, iron ore loader/carter, or of course tradesman to the developing town etc. An absolutely brilliant string of comments from you, keep it up, I love it. Thanks for watching, and kind regards.

Yes, I guess my great great grandfather is likely to have worked his trade as a Plater in the shipyard. He came from near to Whitehaven, a non shipbuilding town at the time. I think he may have learned his trade building locomotive engines. Thank you.

There is a map in existence as I have come across it the past, your right about J Fishers diaries, its the most important local record of all. I recall trying to work out the location of where the park bandstand stood, this i interpreted to be within 20- 30 feet from where the front doors of the Rsiedale Nursing Home, Albert Street are located today.

Let me know if you ever recall what map that was, I'm guessing probably pre large scale O.S. (i.e. pre 6" or 25"), so maybe a private land map or tithe map perhaps. Kind regards.

@@onanysundrymule3144 I am pretty sure the map referred to is held at Barrow Local Archives and therefore unique. I would be glad to help with any local information you cover, however mu knowledge is related to studies of Barrow only I'm afraid. Barrow became a borough in its own right in 1867, Prior to this the area of Low Furness was governed over by Dalton in Furness Bourough Council. Dalton were enforced to give up all jurisdiction over Barrow in 1867, it was a bitter blow to the town of Dalton. The majority of all official records relating to Low Furness prior to the change over have never materialised. Barrow is a town that lacks so much of its early infrastructure documentation. I researched what i could from these missing years and discovered a significant amount of early info. However, the problem I find is that several previous authors have assumed details that are believed and accepted by many people as 'fact' - these previous studies are not evidenced based, whereas my studies are. I do intend to release a study one day soon. Carry on your excellent work, you are not swayed or biased in any way, the topics you have covered so far are enlightening, based on your observation and awareness. Its Brilliant as well as unique. Thank You

The waste land at 10:08, that may be developed, was an abandoned railway sidings in the late 60's. I don't know when the tracks were removed but they were still there in 1968.

The Rawlinson Street Cop Shop was built to house Police Sergeant Alexander McIntee who was brought to Barrow from having worked on Glasgow Docklands. Sergeant McIntee lived in the middle house (where Police Station sign is) for 31 years from 1874 onward. The two houses either side of the station were used for police accommodation only. The Rollo Police Station was not a holding station or as you would imagine. Sgt McIntee fathered 11 children whilst living in the middle house, he was a very significant individual in the town as local councillor for Newbarns and head of the local Watch Committee.

Excellent detail Sir. Yes, I have just looked at the 1913 25" OS map, and indeed it does show the Main Police station at the North West corner of the covered market behind the Town Hall. Great stuff WilkoBB. Now Sir, if you haven't already, may I ask if you may perhaps be prepared to help grow this channel, and simultaneously encourage my humble endeavours, by considering subscribing, and at the same time telling friends or relatives in and around the town? You may also have seen that I do some stuff out and about in Furness too, and will hope to continue to do so, especially if 'fueled and fired' by positive engagement and dialogue. The Yellow Factory channel does some great local stuff too, albeit far more professionally than I could ever hope to do though. Kind regards.

The nursing home was there along side North Lonsdale. The site of North Lonsdale is on the land next to St Georges. So the two existed together. North Lonsdale was demolished sometime in the 90's maybe? after FGH opened. I was working in Vickers up until 1983 and clearly remember FGH being built in the late 70's / early 80's.

I own the Railway station and have gone through hell wigth Barrow council They are trying to buy it off me cheap . My plan is to develop it and keep all the origional stone work brickwork and marble . There are two collums that match those collums tht match outside the House of Lords that has burnt down. The council wanted to demolish it but I have saved the facade .I am afraid you are too late with the building opposite it has been demolished but you are right . The railway station is about six feet under the ground where thw railway lines still exist, The trains only came in on one platform. As for the rest you are 100% right. Roger Mckimm

I forgot to mention that the red brick building behind the railway station was demolished by the guy who gave you permission to film. Peter Cairns He then used at and all theland behind it as storage. When I had the House of Lords cleared Iwas told to store all of the bricks , Which I did behind the railway club once Peter cleared most of his bricks etc . However after a few deliveries the guy who carrying out the demolition work at the HOL Mike Marsh stopped taking the bricks to the railway and stole all of them .He also left the HOL in a hell of a mess . I have reported to the police but so far nothing.Not even interested. I have reported to the owners of that part that I don't own Steven Horrocks and Dave Cross but they are not interested either. They did however come and arrest me for breaking My gates ( I have the receipt ) When Peter Cairns tried to stop me going to my property to store my bricks . Closing the gates and placing his truck in front of it . I hired a dumper off the best mid size plant hire in the world Luscombe hire in Ulverston. Pushed the gates open and moved the truck.. Far from investigating anything else . The police are chasing me . Mind you I am not getting the best from the police at the moment am I . Rog

You are not having much luck at all Sir, my empathies to you. If the police are chasing you, you may need to adopt the following strategy; Drive down any residential street, at any Speed you like (ie at 50 or 60mph in a 30 zone, say), with or Without an exhaust pipe even (it just doesn't seem to matter), then the police will totally ignore you and let you carry on! This has been their strategy for about 5 years as far as I can work out, ie, to ignore speeders and noise polluters, that is. If you do see an actual police officer in person, hang on to him/her, it may be the last time you ever see one..... they are so rare as almost to be a fairy story from the past theses days. 'Believing' that you are seeing an actual police officer may however just be an illusion, or a delusion, or a dream/nightmare ..... they are so rare! I think David Attenborough did a program several years ago on the BBC about them becoming an endangered species of late. In fact, so rare are they I believe in some parts of the country - hereabouts included - that the children of today may only ever get to see one in a zoo amongst other barely extinct species like the Panda, a useful Labour party, and an MOT testing station that actually checks exhaust noise levels. I think they (the police, that is) will often be found as potentially effective breeding pairs around (ie protecting) rich persons gated communities in Richmond, City of London, MPs second homes and duck Houses, and the like: and perhaps it is hoped that if numbers ultimately regenerate, then they will "Re-wild" some young police males and females into these northern forested areas! I hope your troubles are soon resolved. Kind regards.
