Ah it's too bad y'all didn't quite vibe with 710N. It is one of my fav episodes of the show. Appreciate the candor, tho! By the time Ronny/Lily rolled up in S02, I just accepted the show wanting to do whatever crazy, absurd, conflicting tonal things it wanted to do lol. And that worked out for me great. Cuz the often off-putting, stilted, absurd, yet still funny, vibes of the last two seasons is VERY MUCH my jam. S04 definitely isn't as funny as the other three, but the funny stuff still hits. Everything that happens in the show was rooted in its characters and who they are until the very end. That, to me, was the glue that held it all together. And I just LOVE the matter-of-fact violence & action of the show. Love how it is shot and edited. It helps ground the wacky, absurd situations that envelope the violence.

@unportanter
@unportanter 7 ай бұрын
You had trouble with the episode because you expect reality. That's how you relate to tv shows, as though these are real people and you are deciding what your relationship to them would be and how to morally judge them. But not only is tv not reality, Barry has had surreal touches the whole time. It has never been interested in representing reality (at least not strictly). This episode just embraced the surreal stuff a bit more fully. But that's the spirit of the show. The episode is not the problem, the problem is what you brought to it.
@stovesofa
@stovesofa 7 ай бұрын
So if they decided to embrace the surreal stuff by filming dog crap for a 4 hour episode while playing nails on a chalkboard at the highest volume possible, is it my fault I didn’t care for it? Or is it even a problem that I didn’t care for it? People can appreciate shows and their aspects without enjoying them. And just because they don’t care for certain things doesn’t mean they’re putting it down. They’re being open-minded; there is no problem here. Let them experience the show on their own terms.
@unportanter
@unportanter 7 ай бұрын
@@stovesofa That's generally a fair sentiment, unless you're not coming to the show with the proper understanding or attitude or experience. These two have been watching it like it's a normal drama, and basically tolerating the surrealism (like Ronny/Lily) because it's thus far been tolerably linear and comprehensible AS reality. They aren't actually operating at the wavelength of the show, and are judging it on different terms. An extreme example would be a person who'd never seen an action movie watching The Raid and saying it had too much action. MAYBE if that person ramped up their action movies properly and THEN watched The Raid they'd ... still have the same opinion, but we don't know, because they aren't ready for that movie, they're just a person irritated by different stuff. I'm trying not to be TOO harsh on them because I think the fault is more with whomever selected this show for them. You say they're being 'open-minded', and maybe that's true, but it's the open-mindedness of people who haven't watched enough entertainment to understand how to digest entertainment in the way that Barry asks. And, I think you're being generous ... they didn't finish that episode saying "I didn't enjoy it but I'm still adjusting to this show," they finished it saying "This episode was different and irritating".
@stovesofa
@stovesofa 7 ай бұрын
@@unportanter Again, if I’ve watched all the movies in the world and I’ve gained the fullest understanding of action and cinema that the human brain is capable of, am I not allowed to have an opinion if The Raid was just 10 hours of unmitigated action? Or even if The Raid was perfect, am I not allowed to dislike it for whatever subjective reason I want? I understand what you’re saying about the depth of people’s cinematic comprehension. But your point is still ignoring the fact that no show is perfect to begin with. Yes, maybe I’m not on the same “wavelength” of the show but not all “wavelengths” are well-constructed. I can nitpick the construction of the finest show if I want to, because it’s fine to be subjective and no art or craft is perfect. You’re also ignoring the fact that they were annoyed by the sensory aspects of the show. Regardless of how many movies someone watches, that will still bother them physiologically. Just like people who are dyslexic having to work around subtitles. I get it that it’s their “job” to be as open-minded as possible. But it’s still ridiculous to have this expectation that everyone has to only like everything they react to for the first time at any given day. Some people may very well enjoy something by the second or third watch, or an hour or years after they finished watching it. It’s not a problem if they don’t like something right away. And if it really bothers you, just find a different channel. There’s a difference between saying something’s wrong and not letting people operate on their own terms.
@unportanter
@unportanter 7 ай бұрын
@@stovesofa I'm not talking about people who have the "fullest understanding of cinema". THOSE theoretical people are allowed to have any opinion they wish, subjective or objective. We're talking about KZfaq reacters, for whom half the point is that they barely know anything and have barely seen anything. They're allowed to not enjoy things ... as long as there's awareness and an eagerness to learn, which they're incentivized to possess anyways so they don't offend viewers. I do not have any problem with Ariana's revulsion at the car chase scene, that was visceral and emotional and she didn't react to it with *judgment*. I do have a problem with their reaction to the YEAH scene, which, btw, *I don't like*, but I'm extremely experienced in parody/satire/irony and I understand what was happening in that scene and I realize that it was successful in several ways. They just watched it and said "these noises are annoying and therefore this scene is annoying". That's not aware, or constructive, or fun to watch, or open-minded, or anything else good. It's a reaction that is, itself, far more annoying than the scene itself, which was at least trying to do something artful. If you can't at least recognize that then why watch a show like this. That reaction is a microcosm of why I say that they process this show like it's reality, because what's going thru their mind is what it would be like to have a conversation with that woman, rather than processing it as a piece of entertainment.
@stovesofa

@@unportanter So what’s the solution then? You expect them to take an online course on literary/film analysis before they proceed any further with the show? Are you gonna plan their schedule so they can optimize their familiarity with every genre/style/culturally significant work while maintaining algorithmic relevance and fair use? And if it’s not that, how else do you expect people to get more familiar with what they’re unfamiliar with without diving into it and not getting it on the first crack? Unless you’re a patron, they don’t owe you diddly squat. I can make a channel where I just love or hate every show and movie for whatever irrational reason I want. Reaction channels aren’t only meant to be taken as an education. As of January 4 2024, they are who they are and if Barry isn’t their thing to the point that they’re being a little dismissive, the world will keep turning. There are a million other channels you can go to instead that will tell you everything you want to hear. If someone starts dismissing a show because it just doesn’t resonate with them in the moment, it’s not completely fair but it’s also in everyone’s nature. Even the best critics and scholars will be guilty of it. And I wouldn’t even consider the degree that they’re doing it to be “unprofessional.” There are far worse offenders out there.
@cabanochi1936
@cabanochi1936 7 ай бұрын
No spoilers, just gonna throw my ideas out for some of the stuff you guys were talking about. I think the scene with Sally and the exec making those noises is supposed to play more on to that only caring about the algorithm stuff. The executives at the streaming service minimize actual logical thought and empathy to a wild extreme (which we’ve see with the other exec who talks weirdly slowly/doesnt seem to be all there and the other dude with like the yoga ball in season 2 I think it was). I do agree however that this one was a bit overdone, felt a little too wacky imo. I still like the overall narrative that it plays into though. As for the catastrophic sequence of events which Barry is involved in, I think this episode just serves as a point to demonstrate he is in no way in control of the situation at hand. Obviously things have been out of hand to a degree for a while, especially in the third season, but I think this episode in particular serves as a bit of a clarification/realization of what exactly fuches has done + how bombastic the realities of the consequences of Barry’s actions are. Just my thoughts :D

most important episode of Barry. as Bill Hader got more confidant in the show, he mentions this a lot in the podcast, he's most interested in emotional truth rather than structural nuts & bolts. thematically this episode, with the bikers causing mayhem, with Gene facing his impact on ppl, with (last episode's ending w/ the accidental shooting at the end, just before this ep starts), with Barry being poisoned at a seemingly safe place, this one finally pivots into the final emotional thrust of the show, "the impact of violence gets in everything, like glitter". stylistically this is where the show turns into what it remains, pretty consistently, until the end. Bill has said a lot, he just isn't interested in absolute plot logic if it's not helping the emotional truth. also getting the plot to work, it's usually just boring. so in a way that dovetails with the euphoric hopes or hellish realities that the characters have made for themselves, it more and more feels like a dream. i love it, along with Better Call Saul (which ended right before this), as a corrective rebuttal to the Tony Soprano and Walter White shows, about monsters, but the shows were foremost plot-centric and ultimately forgave those monstrous sociopaths. sometimes in your life whether you win or lose you just have moments of "how tf did i get here? where did this come from?" that's the show from this until the end. love the channel! in a hundred years maybe try Deadwood? no one does :(

Bill Hader really likes the surreal stuff. This reminds me of this one story he told, about how when he was doing SNL he wrote and did this one video sketch starring another cast member that he said was exactly his type of surreal humor, and it was apparently the lowest-rated SNL video of all time, or something like that. So he knows that his type of humor doesn't appeal to everybody.

These episodes have to be the worst and it finally clicked on me. The show is literally turning in to GTA. Just pure nonsense parody for shock value or mockery of something. I feel so disappointing how the show has become so devoid of what made the first season so good.

i will concede that season 3 gets a lot more silly with how the world works. in season 1 and 2 barry and his ilk seems like weirdos in a generally normal world. but in season 3 and four the weirdness of the world catches up

I think Barry as a show would be much much better without season 3. felt like they were asked to stretch the story for an extra season and that became seasons 3 and 4. like the season 2 finale felt like a powder keg being lit but then we had to wait six more episodes for anything to happen.
