Richard is shedding body parts in his dreams, but making the most of the first class medical treatment that comes from having the Big C in your Big T. His guest is comedy legend and parrot joke expert Barry Cryer.
Barry reminisces about the many stars he’s worked with over the 60+years of his incredible career including Bob Hope, Graham Chapman, Kenny Everett and basically any big name comedian you can think of. Plus Morecambe and Wise’s views on Monty Python, what it was like doing comedy in between nude tableaux, Tony Hancock’s ashes, the delight of getting a birthday joke from Uncle Baz, the joy of spoonerisms and some first rate swearing from the 86 year old honorary gay man with the perfect smokescreen.
Absolute class.

In the early noughties my brother attended an awards ceremony for his industry. This industry is not even close to entertainment or comedy - think wholesale paper merchants and you’d be close. Anyway Barry Cryer was booked to talk and present the awards. He was great. The awards part of the show finished and Barry found a table (at which my brother was sitting), asked if he could join those seated, and stayed. He had some food, some drinks, and told many stories. He also asked people about themselves and laughed uproariously at jokes and funny comments. He stayed until near the end of the evening. He laughed at one of my brothers comments and my brother rates it as one of the best evenings of his life. As I said, this was not an event that Barry should have been interested in and he didn’t know anyone there but just seemed to love being around people and interested in anyone and everyone. A real one-off.

I'm going to miss him. I'm from the Netherlands, so discovering I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue was a bit of a fluke, discovered it some 20 years ago on Soulseek, looking through people's shared folders for comedy shows and music. Folders full of Just a Minute and I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue episodes kept showing up in the shared files of people who also shared things like Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy, which I love, so I just took a chance, downloaded it and fell in love with it. Those shows were my real entry point into british panel shows, that I still spend most of my time watching and listening to. Barry Cryer feels like a family member. I'm sad to hear he's passed away, but I'm mostly just in awe of him and grateful for the many many times he made me laugh.

Barry used to say that as a lad in Leeds he remembered his dad coming home from work each day covered in coal dust and his mam having to scrub his back clean as sat in an old tin bath in front of the fire.....he could never understand whay as his dad worked in a bank.

Thank you Richard. I met Baz a couple of times in the beer garden at Hatch End, and he was not just a brilliant writer and performer, but a truly lovely and generous man. His shows at the Harrow Arts Centre were like a family gathering. We knew all the jokes, but his enthusiasm and sheer enjoyment of live performance made every punchline seem like new. We'll not see his like again.

Hear, hear - was that the beer garden at the Moon and Sixpence? I took many a SIlverlink line train alongside him from Harrow and Wealdstone to Euston. So warm, friendly and had time for everyone.

Anyone remember "Crosswits"? It was first shown on 3 September 1985 originally hosted by Barry Cryer for the first 2 series. Always fantastic on "Sorry I Haven't A Clue" and many other BBC radio and TV programs, Jokers wild, Hello Cheeky,No - That's Me Over Here and many more. A sad day for British comedy! R.I.P. Barry

One of the funniest, cleverest and most charming men you could ever hope to meet. Barry was a real comedy legend. Not only was he tremendously funny, he was always incredibly supportive of new performers. Many comics of Barry's era were extremely hostile toward the new generation of "alternative" comedians back in the 80s, but Barry took them under his wing. I will miss his generosity of spirit and that familiar laugh. RIP Barry.

Dick Vosburgh (the American) was my grandad! Lovely to hear him mentioned in this podcast. Barry was a lovely bloke and a great friend to my family. He’ll be missed.

Met him at Edinburgh festival after a show and he was absolutely lovely just what I’d hoped. We chatted for a few minutes which was so gracious as he was with a crowd of celebs but took time to speak to a long term fan..I’m 67 now so had the pleasure of watching him for decades as well as unknowingly listening to a lot of his jokes! He wrote for so many greats! I’ll miss him

This is such sad news and my heart goes out to his family and friends. It really is the end of an era. Barry seemed to have known (and was loved by) everybody and was one of the last links to an amazing group of talented people, the likes of which we'll never see again. It was always such a joy to listen to him. Keep them laughing in heaven Barry with all your old mates who I'm sure are waiting for you.

I am learning more about him by his passing he sounded like a fantastic man. Also sounded like he was always on the phone to other people making them laugh! So I'm delving into Barry Cryer a bit more given the wonderful things people are saying about him and wasn't it a privilege to have him here? And giving people these wonderful memories and laughs. Wonderful.

Thanks for putting this up on such a sad day. Been a fan of Barry's since I was a kid. As a 10yr old, I loved him on I'M SORRY because he was the naughty one. Like so many of my favorite comics, I'm glad to have seen him live. RIP Baz.

Barry Cryer, the man besides (rather than behind) most of my favourite comedy. Everett inspired my whole life, and ISIHAC is the most legendary radio show there will ever be. Really gonna miss him.

One of the greats. Never aimed bitter shots at younger comedians and, unlike lesser comedians, didn't spend his whole late-period career boring us by going on about woke-ism and cancel culture. As a result, remained funny and looked happier.

i was working at the Liverpool Neptune around 2006 when he was doing his "First Farewell Tour" and Barry turned up early and had us all in stitches as we set up the bar. I was lucky to see so many great comedians but none took the time too get to know the staff like Barry did

What a wonderful, clever, fascinating, adorable man. In hard times when the world seems bleak, listen to and watch people like this. Life can be positive and uplifting. It needs more Barries and more Eric and Ernies and more Ronnie's and do on. We miss them all. But such brilliance can still be found online.

Barry Cryer was one of those amazing souls whose comedy was absolutely timeless. You can watch stuff from 60 years ago, or last week and it's still fresh and hilarious Rest well, you legend.

I chatted with Barry along and the late Ian Davidson at a Monty Python Party in the 90s and he was an absolute gent. And my favourite quote was when asked for a sketch to fill in a gap in the Russ Abbott show was - "Do you want in now or do you want it to be funny?"

I was so sad to read about Barry I’ve listened to him on ISIHAC since I was little and he’s always made me laugh. The world was rubbish anyway, but it’s so much worse without Barry in it

Thank you Richard for posting this. I was lucky enough to enjoy an evening in his company and just loved every second of it. Superbly funny man and very much missed. Listened to him on Clue for decades with his compatriots and hearing him laugh always made me smile. So many heartwarming tributes were paid to him and it perhaps wasn’t fully appreciated how much of a linchpin of comedy he was.

Fabulous! Thank you so much Richard. I used to live in the same road as Barry in the 80’s & 90’s. He was a regular figure with his white hair in Hatch End. I only spoke to him a few times but this is the conversation I would have loved to have. RIP Baz thank you for the laughs

We've lost another comedy great.. As well as being revered by the old guard, he gave so much guidance to new comedians starting out. I can't remember if it was on this podcast or somewhere else where a new comedian quoted him, to paraphrase "I like talking about the past, I don't like living in it". New comedy is the thing to get excited about and that's what excited him.

That man may not know how he made the life of a working class boy, from a single parent home in Glasgow, that much better by the careers he touched and tv screens he reached. I cried when I heard the news of his passing. Rest in peace, Barry.

One of my big regrets is not talking to him more when he played a venue i managed... He is still so sharp and full of language that still makes the jokes surf the stories... RIP My Cryer - let's hope for a re-incarnation sooner rather than later!

I’m just going to play this every night as I go to sleep…that sounds like an insult but I mean it as the greatest compliment…could listen to you both on repeat. Barry for the anecdotes and the brilliant wit and Rich for genuinely being the best interviewer out there. I am astonished that the BBC, ITV et al haven’t picked him up. He brings the best out of all his guests. It surprised me, knowing what a needy prick he seemed to be in the shows I’ve seen him in, but he knows when to talk and when to listen. That is a great attribute for anyone who wants to be an interviewer. Superb!

He was always funny because he laughed about the humour of a situation, or a pun, or laughed along with someone. He just seems like a nice chap, who put his ego aside to make comedy WITH everyone, this is why he endured in what can be a very short lived industry, he reached the top, then helped others up.
