An unsung hero of mine, playing a tune I guess not very familiar to many, but one of my favourites. This was recorded in the fifties. It's a Rogers and Hart composition written in the thirties, which like "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" by Fran Landesman and Tommy Wolf, became a jazz "standard" without ever really being popular with the general public.
Barry Galbraith worked with the best as a "sideman" and was reputed to be the inspiration to some of those who followed him like a couple of other favourites of mine, Tal Farlow and Jimmy Raney. He spent an increasing amount of time in the latter part of his life teaching, due to a medical problem with one of his hands.
He was quite versatile, like many jazz musicians in the leaner times, he was prepared to record with "pop" singers.
Barry and Mundell Lowe played guitar on the Everly Brothers recording of "Let It Be Me."
(Barney Kessel played on the Beach Boys recording of "Wouldn't It Be Nice?")
Barry Galbraith 1919-1983
Personnel:
Barry Galbraith guitar.
Hank Jones, piano.
Milt Hinton, bass.
James "Osie" Johnson, drums.
Recorded 3/5/1956.
Edit: 25/1/2014.
Here's a KZfaq link to the 1961 short documentary film; "After Hours" I found today, with surprisingly, only 57 views, (I thank the originator Trevor Bascom) but I'm sure that it will get a lot more views now.
It features Barry playing (in his typical performing style), along with some very well known names: Cozy Cole, Roy Eldridge, Coleman Hawkins, Milt Hinton and Johnny Guarnieri. The singer is Carol Stevens.

He was your grandfather!!?? ...you posted your comment six years ago, but I wanted to reply anyway and tell you that your grandfather means the world to me. I adore his playing. His use of "Drop D" tuning like Johnny Smith and Mundy did is one of my favorite sounds ever. Your grandfather had impeccable taste..his technique was astounding..with a sound that makes me feel like "everything is going to be alright" God Bless him. I hope this finds you well Barbara best

I studied with Barry in 1972 at his home in Irvington, NY. He was as great a human being as he was a player. Such a kind and humble man.

What a great tune. Barry was a genius. My first exposure to the song was via the Chet Baker "Let's Get Lost" documentary where they play Chet's 1974 CTI recording of the song over some memorable imagery. Chet's version is interesting because it's about the last time in his career when his singing had a trace of that mid-1950s "innocent" sound that his fans all love. By the late 1970s, his singing was kind of like late Billie Holliday, moving in its own way, but more fragile and variable. Lorenz Hart's lyric is a heartbreaker, and while the comparison to "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" is apt, so is a comparison to Rodgers and Hart's own "Spring Is Here"--that mix of sweet wistful melody and emotionally bleak lyrics was so potent, and its what puts Rodgers and Hart above Rodgers and Hammerstein for me.

Relax e classe di un grande : Barry Galbraith. Le frasi suonate così piano sono fantastiche e aveva anche una buona tecnica strumentale.

Thank you so much for this upload and most especially for the 'After Hours' link. I've been trying to get my hands on this film but to no avail. 'An unsung hero of mine'. Very rightly put. Mine too. Thanks again :)

@wbjams Thanks for that, I've had that recording for over fifty years, still like it. He was well respected, a testimony to that were his "sidemen" on this recording.

Gslbraith was on so many recordings as a sideman that there have to be some tapes buried away in vaults that could be reissued. For example there have to be more tracks than this from the session that produced this track. It takes someone like Mosaic to track them down and reissue them as they did with Johnny Smith's small groups.
