["You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two" from the same performance is at • Barry Humphries (a.k.a... ] Best known to the world for his brilliant comic creation Dame Edna, Barry Humphries had a long association with Lionel Bart's "Oliver!" When "Oliver!" had its premiere in London in 1960, Humphries played Mr. Sowerberry and covered Fagin. Humphries repeated Mr. Sowerberry on Broadway in 1963. When "Oliver!" had its first London revival in 1967, Humphries was Fagin. In 1997, three years into the run of Cameron Mackintosh's revival of "Oliver!" at the London Palladium, Humphries returned to the role of Fagin.

I had zero clue this legend played Fagin, one of my favourite roles. This makes me miss Dame Edna (Barry Humphries) even more. RIP, you absolute hero to the comedy world.

Barry was on the judging panel of the 2008 BBC One TV series I'd Do Anything when it was looking for a Nancy and three Oliver's for Cameron Mackintosh's London revival of Oliver

I saw barry in the london revival at the piccadilly theatre and he was in credible playing a more sinister version than ron moody in the 1960 production at the new theatre in which barry appeared as the undertaker mr sowerberry. This man was so well rea and talented and i will miss him. Rip

The child talking throughout this may also be little, and this musical is suitable for little ones (who can handle more mature topics).

@@benneden2580 Yeah, like I suspected - consideration for others is gone. MY child can make sounds because of (insert reasons) and to hell with everyone else.

@benneden2580 so screw the others? No. Kids makes noise and that's understandable but take charge! Tell the kid to be quiet. Or if they can't really do that. Take them out of the room until they settle down.

I’m curious to know, was Steven Hartley still playing Bill Sykes at this point in the production? I heard he was in this revival starting around 1996, I believe.

🎹 Tsk, tsk! After years of portraying the over-the-top Dame Edna, Mr. Humphreys grossly overacted the part of Fagan in this song and did not deliver the material sincerely and plaintively. (Just saying...)

This is zoomed in very tightly. The London Palladium is a very big house, and almost no one would have been this close.

It's character makeup in a large theatrical house. That's how it's done.

This is amazing to see.....Barry Humphries, R.I.P, was Ron Moody's (Fagin) understudy in the original London cast of Oliver in which he played Mr Sowerberry the un dertaker.

Theater makeup-wise, it’s not even really that extreme. It accentuates his face very well and very clearly conveys a kinda creepy old man.
