'Lagege', fully written as 'ni Agége', means 'at Agége'. If you live in Lagos, you must know the place called Agége. The chorus is a play/twist on the Yoruba children folk song, 'Aeroplane ód'àbọ̀' (Goodbye, Aeroplane). As children, we sang the song whenever an aeroplane flew by. The second verse of the folk song, however, provides some comic relief: "Mo réèmò l'ágége: ajá w'ẹ̀wù, órósọ; ó faa báàgì s'áápá kan. Gbamúgbamù jigíjigì". This translates to "I saw strange sight at Agége: a dog wore a shirt and tied a wrapper; it even carried a bag on one hand. What a cause for serious laughter!". This song by Barry Jhay highlights some 'strange sights' in modern Nigerian society too. For example, he mentions mindboggling and funny issues, like a devout congregant smoking weed, a priest who loves a bribe, a mermaid that fornicates, a supposedly celibate church father that (secretly) screams "hold me tight", someone who sends fake alerts to the church pretending to pay tithe etc. It's a masterful composition, a nod to Yoruba folklore and a cautionary tale for today's so-called modern people to 'get a grip', with the bridge: 'Chameleon dey waka small small, e dey die - not to talk of frog wey dey up and down', that is, 'A chameleon walks cautiously, yet it dies. What chance has a frog that jumps up and down?'. That's the translation of a Yoruba proverb that teaches caution and modesty/ discourages excessiveness and brazen conduct.
