The splendid version of the Handel's sarabande that you can hear during the duels in Kubrick's masterpiece Barry Lyndon

Very interesting version; it serves the film impeccably. In a rare interview, Kubrick likened arrangements of this piece to Morricone (presumably his duel themes for Leone films). It's this sort of astute observation which, among other things, sets Kubrick apart.

No not this he wanted him to score a clockwork orange morricone couldn't do it for schedule issue Kubrick asked him once then he never botherd to ask him again. In a recent interview I heard him saying he regrets not doing a clockwork orange kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nsmaobmqxq--iH0.html

Leonard Rosenman did this brilliant arrangement with the tympani doing the theme and the introduction of strings could have have been perfectly done with percussion snare drum, but cleverly done instead with strings doing the percussive part, wrapped up with the original harpsichord, but still with the tympani in the background. One of my favorite scores for movies.

@AbolK2 space odessey is commentary on man, while Barry lyndon is a critique of "gentlemanly living". And also odyessy has the perfect cut, and when you claim a movie is the best you have to look at the larger consensus. And I think I fall in that.

In many ways I consider Barry Lyndon the greatest film ever made (although The Godfather and The Godfather II are also obvious contenders - and possibly some others as well). It is unquestionably my favorite Kubrick film - even over 2001: A Space Odessey - his other, nearly flawless masterpiece. And it is also certainly one of the most beautiful films ever made, if not the most beautiful. I realize Ryan O'Neal was a somewhat controversial individual - especially as a father, and also to some extent as an actor - but I don't believe he was ever given proper acclaim for his performance in Barry Lyndon. In my mind, he was literally made for that part. Actually, in many ways, I think Ryan O'Neal was quite a lot like Redmond Barry in real life. Here's to you, Ryan: "Kiss me, me boy, for we'll never meet again." Rest in peace, sir.

I agree! I saw the film for the first time last night and I thought it was Purcell's Queen Mary Funeral March again. I was surprised Kubrick would do something so self-referential, then afterwards when I looked it up I realised what a tone-deaf dolt I was!
