Barry is the best natural runner in NFL history. People sometimes forget what a solid blocker, and receiver out of the backfield he actually was. Equally important to all his on-field gifts, he was a complete class act as a person.

Barry Sanders is the greatest RB of all-time. He retired early, on his terms, otherwise he would've owned every RB record there is. The Lions were awful, they relied on Barry and he delivered EVERY time. Imagine what he would have done with a competent O-line and a competent team.

I've been a Green Bay fan my entire life, living on the east coast, so I never got to see many Packers OR Lions games on television back when Sanders was playing - but when I did, he stood out not only because of his incredible talent, but because of his class. The image I have in my head of Barry Sanders, whenever I hear his name mentioned, is how he never showboated - when he scored he would either take a knee a la old-time football rules, or he'd simply hand the ball to the referee and run to the sidelines. And if anybody had the right to celebrate, it was Sanders after any of his incredible runs.
@MichaelWilliams-zm4fk8 жыл бұрын
+MrAlumni72 Yep. Earl Campbell was one of those "no showboat" types too. He either just set the ball down gently in the end zone, or handed it softly to a ref and went for some Gatorade.

Thank you for honoring the GOAT ... Barry Sanders. He never had a good offensive line like other backs had. He earned every inch with pure drive, skill, and determination. I will always miss the miraculous talent of Mr. Sanders. There will never be another like him. The NFL has never been the same.

Let's swap Barry and Emmitt, Do you think Emmitt would've been the all time leading rusher behind the Lions line? Put Barry behind (arguably one of the finest lines oat) and you get a 20,000 yard rusher. He would've been untouchable on the rushing list.
@Downsmooth9 жыл бұрын
Jacob Denise I'm a Cowboys fan, and I agree with you, that had Barry played on the Cowboys offense, he would have the rushing title, and would have gained more yards as a Cowboy than Emmitt. But I also will say that he would not have scored as many TDs as Emmitt, Emmitt would have scored more TDs in Detroit than Barry did, and Emmitt would still be in the Hall of Fame if he had played for the Lions. Two different running styles, that's all. Both all-time greats.
@therealest13328 жыл бұрын
+Jacob Denise I honestly believe he would have gotten 25,000 yards behind a Dallas O-line.
@MrAlumni728 жыл бұрын
+Jacob Denise That's the bittersweet thing about sports - the what-ifs. What if Ted Williams hadn't taken time off to fight in 2 wars? What if Nolan Ryan had played on winning teams? Things we'll never know, yet always regret.
@samuelrobert40837 жыл бұрын
I believe he'd play the same as he did in Detroit or accomplish even less. The Cowboys line was at its peak only from 1992 to 1994 after the C was traded to the texans, Newton and Tunei were getting old and Williams got into a car accident. The lions had a better line after 1995. Barry also ran a run and shoot meaning he could only had to either chose left or right. Emmitt played with a fullback and used his offensive line more than Barry thanks to his great vision. Barry's linemen admitted then couldn't block for him because they didn't know where he'd be on any giving play. In 1997, Barry first 2 games were far from stellar. Because the coach switched the formation into a classic formation that included 2 WR, 1 TE and a FB. Barry had a lot less yards those 2 games and his dad made a complaint that wasn't the system he should run in and they don't know how to use Barry. The switched back to a run and shoot and Barry breaks 2000 yards. I really don't think with his style he can make the most out of a good offensive line and a fullback so there's really no point in having it. Emmitt made that line who they were. They weren't pro-bowlers or all-pros before he came to Dallas. In conclusion, Spread formations = 15,000 retires early and any other formation

+pashaun Pride For sure. Maybe the single greatest runner of all time. OJ too. Although I think if OJ would have played on a warmer climate team and maybe a bette team he may have had even better numbers and less injuries. Same for Payton in his early years. Living in Texas I didn't get the chance to really see Payton. But between the stats and the highlights I've seen he's kinda like the Jerry Rice of RB's.

Lomas Brown is a hof lineman. Barry gives his o line props but his fans don't. Make that make sense
@JZdude5189 жыл бұрын
Definitely the G.O.A.T.. You have to consider A) He retired early, and B) You need to consider if he and Emmitt switched spots. If you put Emmitt Smith behind the crappy Lions offensive line, on a team with no other offensive weapons, the defense knowing your the only one that's going to get the ball, I don't think he does nearly as well as Barry did in that situation. Versus Barry behind one of the best O-Lines of all time, on an amazing Super Bowl contending team with two other hall of fame offensive threats for the defense to worry about, I don't think anyone would even compare to Barry when it was all said and done.
@andrewmanjarrez61859 жыл бұрын
Lions played a spread offense with a team who has a passing game making it easier. Walter Payton didn't all defensive players were looking at him and he managed to come out as the goat
@klmbaby69 жыл бұрын
Andrew Manjarrez You're right the Lions did run the west coast offense but they never really had a dominant QB to run those offenses so the defense still stacked the line on Barry. In fact, in most situations, the defense singled up on receivers and dared the Lions QBs to throw the ball.

JZdude518 the best running back ever is bo jackson not barry not walter not emmit not thurman not Lt but bo jackson he hit like jerome bettis and was faster than barry
@bayushizero9 жыл бұрын
ramon Clark Bo didn't have Barry's balance or vision. Bo was a power and speed runner on a team built around him. Barry didn't have a team to be built around him, unfortunately. He probably had just as many yards running laterally or backwards to escape rushing linemen than he had yards gained. The Lions as a tea were absolutely trash and would never have gotten to the playoffs if they didn't have Barry Sanders.
@Noodles311979 жыл бұрын
But bo didn't need the balance or vision he ran everyone over and out ran everyone else he didn't run over I agree Barry is in the top 5 but he would of been in the shadow of Bo if he didn't have the lineman tackle him by his leg
