It's sort of wierd that Thurman has sort of forgotten. So much of the focus of that era in the NFL is on Barry and Emmitt. Thurman was one the most versatile backs in the history of the NFL.

That Buffalo defensive front 7 is kind of in the same boat too. They were pretty damn good but nobody really mentions them much. Bruce Smith is the NFL all time sack leader.

Being such a dynamic threat out of the backfield in the passing game, Thurman has had big influence on how guys play the position today. e.g. Christian McCaffrey, Cordarrelle Patterson, Deebo Samuel etc. With the blending of what positions are expected to do in the modern NFL, running backs and wide receivers are no longer just running or receiving in the same way Fullbacks have been phased out in favour of using Tight Ends in the running game, even lining them in the back field.

I feel Thurman gets a bad rap from the SB losses losing his helmet and all. This guy was an all time great. An all purpose back who would thrive even more today cause of the natural of game which values all purpose backs a lot more. I mean he won MVP of the whole league in 91. Great player.

He’s a HOF’er. Anyone who speaks negatively about him or doubts his legitimacy simply doesn’t know football. I do agree that he doesn’t get all the shine he deserves which makes it sad for real football fans that hasn’t heard of him bc they’re missing out on a very talented rb and a overall special person and making it to four straight Super Bowls is an amazing accomplishment in itself so he deserves praise for just that alone.

They were both so fun to watch. I'm a Bills fan, so there is bias, but for Thurman not mentioned often with the best running backs of all time is a crime. There shouldn't be a question that Thurman is one of the best ever, like it is with Barry. Thurman led the league in scrimmage yards for 4 straight seasons, and he would have had so many more touchdowns if the Bills didn't take him out in goaline situations for the backup Davis because they thought it was unnecessary and to avoid him getting hurt, unlike Emmit Smith who had so many touchdowns within the 5 yard line. (Don't get me wrong Emmit was great too) I'm just saying Thurman's numbers would be padded even more if we didn't pull him.

Barry Sanders was a once in a lifetime talent at Running Back that I have yet to see since he retired. Before him was Walter Payton and Jim Brown. To me, Barry Sanders is the best Running Back ever and also the best Running Back to never win a Super Bowl. I mean who could with that Detroit team back in the 90’s? Scott Mitchell and Rodney Peete at Quarterback? Please?! The Lions never built around Barry Sanders like the Dolphins didn’t build around Dan Marino. That being said, Dan Marino is the best Quarterback to never win a Super Bowl. Could you imagine if they both were on the same team?! I’m a firm believer that every winning Super Bowl Quarterback great has had a good Running Back behind him. Griese/ Csonka, Bradshaw/ Harris, Montana/ Craig, Elway/ Davis. Except Tom Brady. That dude literally won championships with so many different Running Backs during his long tenure with the Patriots. Trent Dilfer is the exception to what I just said. No offense but Dilfer was not a “great” quarterback. Sorry, but that Baltimore Defense won that championship that year against the Giants.

To hear Barry Sanders tell what he mostly did as a kid of helping his Dad with roofing as his job was to bring the 50.lb bucket of TAR and bundles of thick roof tiles up on the ladder during SUMMER is very motivating of new ways to work out and even train. Barry had very massive legs as they were bigger than most taller guys. That type of work out of climbing a ladder with extra weight is risky but if you can find a safe way, legs should be extremely sore the next day or 2.

The thing is the second Thurman and Barry left the NFL, Oklahoma State sucked for many years after that. Look up the record of up Pat Jones who was the head coach after the 1988 season. They go from two straight 10-2 seasons in 87 to 88 to 4-7 in 89 and 90 and 0-10-1 in 1991. They were the best ever for OSU up until Les Miles came to OSU to revive the team and then Mike Gundy who was the QB's for both Thurman and Barry to continue that tradition. Too bad they couldn't beat Oklahoma or Nebraska who were ALWAYS the top dogs in the Big 8.
