In this second instalment of BARRYS SCHOOL OF BEATS we go behind the beat with Barry as he breaks down his beat making process, dissecting a quirky little Hip Hop creation, as featured in his rather popular Rhythm Roulette spoof (If you haven't peeped it yet the link is below)
In this episode we get to see the thought process´s that go into Barrys beat making as well as the various production techniques employed. From the programming and layering of the drums to the chopping and triggering of the Tijuana Brass inspired sample, we get an inside seat, witnessing the entire beat making process from initial conception to the finished composition.

I always start with drums too Barry. If the drums aren't cooking, I simply can't move on.

I mostly sample first and make a groove with just the bass and whatever drums the sample already has. Sometimes I start with the drums but that’s when I put actual instruments in.

I don’t sample as much as I used to anymore. Since I like a more jazzy approach to my beats and songs (the ones on my channel are all sampled I think), I play the drums on a drum machine or my friend plays his drums, I play my bass and piano. I add other instruments either from VSTs or if I can’t play an instrument, I get friends to play them for me. It’s interesting how you do the drums, I’m gonna try it out. Been having fun sampling though right now I’m into a clipping horrorcore sound or I just write. Great video, I like these.

Hi Barry, I like your beats videos and the Rhythm Roulette was far better than the official version. Can you make a video on how to chop samples in Kontakt please? I have Kontakt 5 and I just use it for the sounds, I didn't know that Kontakt could chop samples. Do use any of the sounds included in Kontakt on your tracks?

Hey man! I didn't know how to use Kontakt properly. It would have ever crossed my mind to use Kontakt as a sampler (something it actually is) and make a new instrument. i always used it for orchestra and piano libraries, which i just load in and get going. Is it possible to chop up the track in my DAW and just drag the sample into the piano roll in Kontakt or do i have to export all samples first and then load them in? Actually you inspired me to start with sampling (guitarist who rediscovered his love for hip hop). Keep up the great work, mate.

Yea probably pitched em up a bit. I would probably rather pitch up than time stretch as you always loose a bit of quality when stretching even when using the best algorithms.

Its all about dynamics. Its a question of drum choice, sample taking method and frequency balancing. As I point out in this video I am a massive believer in layering but there are many techniques when for instance using looped/chopped style of drums. I have to point out that when you are doing beats in DAWs it is a lot easier to manipulate the audio of drums in order to specifically target and EQ/Compress specific drum elements i.e kik, snare, hats. More info to come in future vids. This is but the beginning!

don't overcompress, maybe your compressor settings are wrong (too fast attack -> killing transients -> flat sound)

Kenny Lauderdale Hi Kenny. Yea what i do on my vids is run everything through a Dj mixer. So I take the daw output and put it in Chanel 2 (I have the turntable in Chanel 1. Then I just set up a mic and stick it into the mic input of the mixer. I then take the output of the mixer and put it into the mic in input on my Mac and use a screen recorder with audio to record the audio and screen. I then sync them up afterwards in premiere pro. Hope that helps

Great! Perhaps you can show some of you're workflow in this video. Most videos in YT only show how chopping in Kontakt works simple. They chop up a kick, some 2 bar sequence or stuff they never will use in their own production. This quarter notes sampling I never seen by someone.... But thanks for you´re videos, they are entertaining! I watched the Rhythm Roulette a few times. Really good stuff! 👍 Keep Going

it seems to me that he chops up the track and seperates it into different tracks within the project, exports the stems and then loads them into Kontakt. There's a tutorial on KZfaq how to make your own library in Kontakt.

Funny you should say that, I did acquire a copy of Specdrum back in the mid 80s but could never get it to load up. what would that be ? 2bit? lol. Not attempted rentaghost but I am planning to upload a rather tasty Scooby Doo inspired beat I made years ago at some point on BBL.

All your stuff sounds so nicea and sharp and loud, is that just the luxury of good records sampled from quality equipment? Even the vinyl rips I have don't sound as nice.

I think its just many many years of experience Andy. I am by no means a great engineer but after a while you learn how to construct beats in a way that makes the mixing process a lot easier. Drum layering coupled with all the flexibility you have when mixing in DAWs make for much more controlled and balanced results. As I point out in vid #1 thug, a good converter and turntable set up certainly help the situation. Hopefully as I put more of these vids up you will be able to see how I go about things and this may help you a little
