I’m 60 yrs old, and I remember when I was in preschool, the teachers played this album to teach us what an orchestra sounded like. My teacher must’ve been so cool.

Although the orchestra on the album was actually a "Melotron". Of course the instruments were originally recordings of real instruments.

@@rmacdougallaliasdogviticus , Lynyrd Skynyrd-FREEBIRD. Vocalist Ronnie Van Zant wrote the lyrics to Freebird when he was 19 and guitarist Allen Collins the music when he was 16, and to this day it remains one of rock's most iconic songs ever written. They had the song already written for 5 years before it finally got recorded on their 1973 debut album Pronounced. Even then it didn't get immediately introduced to the world because Pronounced also had several other legendary songs on the album that became hits and remained set list staples for the band for their entire careers. Before the 1977 plane crash and beyond when the survivors reformed 10 years after the plane crash. Those songs initially got more airplay than Freebird because they were shorter, and deemed to be quote-unquote "more radio friendly" for the time. Among the songs on that debut album with Freebird were Simple Man, Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, I Ain't The One, & Things Goin' On.

In 1970, I was walking around Duke University. In front of the iconic Chapel, four guys were sitting, playing guitars and singing. I thought to myself these guys are good enough to play music for a living. Later that night at the Moody Blues concert, I realized they were the guys from earlier that day. Both performances were excellent.

I got to experience that "once in a lifetime" chance to hear them sing this live 5 times. I'm 66 now and have been a huge fan of the band since I was in high school. Cool factoid: Justin Hayward, the lead singer, wrote this for his girlfriend and gave it to her as a gift (along with a set of white satin sheets). They had been apart for a lengthy time and he gave the gift upon her return. He was 19 at the time.

Saw these guys live around 85. Great concert feel from a band that loved to perform music with real meaning. Beautiful experience during the second half of the show thanks to their sound engineer for doing his best in the acoustically infamous Calgary Saddledome. If he ever reads this I'm sure he'll remember it as one of his toughest challenges. The volume had to be low but we got the true concert (spiritual) experience of this world class band. This is a great live performance. "Nights In White Satin" is their most famous song. Moody Blues are one of my favorite groups from the 60's-80's. Love their mix of rock with classical music. Lots of great songs such as "Go Now", "Tuesday Afternoon", "The Story In Your Eyes", "Question", "Ride My See-Saw", "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)", "Gemini Dream", "The Voice" etc. All of their music is great! Many of their records are concept albums & meant to be listened to all at once. Sadly Ray Thomas their flute player & singer passed away in 2018 & their drummer Graeme Edge passed away in 2021.

Nice, great performance and they still had it live later in their career. I saw them 3 times, once with a full orchestra, they were an amazing band, both live and in studio. Their albums from 1967 - 1972 are all classic and everyone is worth a listen. They had elements of Rock, Prog, Pop, Classical, Psychedelia and New Age in a perfect blend that was the Moody Blues. For a great live performance when they were in their prime, search YT for them in Paris 1970, they are in an intimate venue and the audience is spellbound, they are amazing there and urge you catch it sometime. Enjoy! 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎸🎹🎻🎶🔥

I was 4 or 5 the first time I heard this song (I was introduced to it by my Mom and Dad) ... I fell in love. To this day I will say that Justin is one of my all-time favorite vocalists. When I first heard Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds album I found my favorite Justin song, Forever Autumn. In the early 2000s a full anniversary stage show was created for it in which Justin came back to "update" his performances live on stage. Needless to say, that new live version of Forever Autumn blew the original away ... which is saying a lot. Justin live (as well as the Moody Blues live) is just an unforgettable experience that doesn't leave you wanting for more. Any of the bands performances from Red Rocks shouldn't be missed.

I am a new subscriber, and I have been a fan of the Moody Blues since their release of the Motown cover of "Go Now" was a hit for the band and Clint Warwick was the bassist with Denny Laine on lead vocals. Denny Laine and Clint Warwick left the band with Denny Laine later going to Paul McCartney's group Wings. In 1966, Justin Hayward was hired as lead singer and guitarist, and John Lodge as the bassist as well as backup vocals. The group changed direction from their earlier Blues based music, and in 1967, was filling a contract to Decca, who the band still owed some recording time. Decca also sold early stereo equipment and wanted to experiment with a sound to advertise their new stereo speakers. At this time the band was made up of Justin Hayward lead vocals and guitar, John Lodge bassist, and vocals, Mike Pinder keyboards, and vocals, Ray Thomas woodwind instruments, and vocals, and Graeme Edge percussion, and vocals. Each of the band members contributed to writing songs and singing, as well as providing background vocals. Decca brought the Moody Blues into the studio with the London Symphony Orchestra and wanted them to record a classical piece. The band had been working on a stage play, and Justin Hayward had already written the songs "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Nights In White Satin." Mike Pinder, the keyboardist who worked at a factory making and repairing Melotrons, which could tape any other instrument and play that sound back in a loop, had written the song "Dawn Is A Feeling." Justin Hayward met with Peter Knight, the conductor of the Orchestra, and asked him if he objected to them recording something else, and Knight agreed. The band locked themselves in the studio and began writing the songs on the concept album Days Of Future Passed, which was released in 1967 and deals with both the chronological order of a day in a person's life as well as the order of a persons lifetime as a deeper concept. When the album was played initially for the Decca studio management, they didn't like it and said that that kids couldn't dance to the music on the album. There was a representative from the Decca office in New York City at the meeting who was impressed with the album and said that he could sell the album. The Moody Blues toured the U.S. for the first time in 1968 but the band had no publicity and were not well known and had very little funds to tour on. They traveled around the U.S. on an old bus and worked at small venues to help pay for their travel across the country. The first release of the album Days Of Future Passed in the U.S. was in 1968, and that's when I bought my copy, which I still have along with all of their other albums released in the 1960s and 70s. The song "Nights In White Satin didnt become popular in the U.S. and start receiving radio play until 1973. The band released their eighth album with this lineup of musicians in 1978 that was called "Octave," and Mike Pinder had married a woman who owned a ranch in California and didn't tour that album. His replacement was Patrick Moraz, who was to originally just replace Pinder for the tour, and Mike Pinder wanted the band to record in his studio in California and just have a replacement for touring. Mike Pinder had already had one failed marriage and had children by his first marriage that he wasn't close to. Pinder wanted to work on his new marriage and still take his musical career seriously. The rest of the band failed to come to an agreement with Mike Pinder, and he was replaced on a permanent basis with Patrick Moraz. The Moody Blues released eight albums before Mike Pinder left, and the decade of the eighties came in, and their musical directection changed and, in my personal opinion, was never as good and was more commercialized. I have some of the albums from the eighties, but I have never really listened to them more than the first initial time. Between 1967 and 1978, they released "Days Of Future Passed" 1967. "In Search Of The Lost Chord 1968. On The Threshold Of A Dream 1969. To Our Childrens Childrens Children. 1969-70. Question Of Balance 1970-71. Every Good Boy Deserves Favour 1971. Seventh Sojourn 1972. After a short time off Octave 1978. I was fortunate enough to see the Moody Blues in concert twelve times before Mike Pinder left the band, and three of those times, they performed with a Symphony Orchestra. I took my wife to the Octave concert in early 1978, and she was expecting our first daughter who inherited my love for the Moody Blues and for all good music. I also took my younger sister. It was my younger sisters first concert and my wife's first Moody Blues concert. Our youngest daughter and her husband bought us tickets to see the Moody Blues at a casino in 2012. Justin Hayward, John Lodge, and Graeme Edge, the drummer, were the only original members, but they still sounded great and played mainly their older songs from the 60s and 70s. My wife and I have been married for over 50 years, and I started going to rock concerts in the 60s. I went to more concerts than I could count before my wife and I were married, and I have seen some incredible bands and performers and some great shows, but I can honestly say that the Moody Blues were more than just a rock band and they always sounded amazing live. Unfortunately, Justin Hayward, the John Lodge, are the only members of the band who are still alive. I have a massive album collection from the late 50s through the 80s, and I love all types of music, but the Moody Blues will always be my favorite.

Bands like The MB's, and Procul Harum, from the UK, brought the orchestral element to Rock, which made you look at Rock in a whole other light, back then. The Beatles, and the Who, as well, went way beyond the typical 2 guitars, Bass, and drums thing, very often..Ironically, The MB's have a song, "I'm just a singer in a Rock 'n Roll band," which they were, but came to be so much more...I saw them twice, and they didn't disappoint, either time.

Along the lines of the Moody Blues is a classical rock group called Renaissance. The group is lead by opera-like vocalist Annie Haslam. They were most popular is the 1970's with their "Live at Carnegie Hall" double live album being their most popular. Their more popular songs are "Can You Understand", "Mother Russia", "Ashes Are Burning" and "Carpet of the Sun". They are best appreciated live. There are great live performances from 1974 on youtube.

I listen to the Moody Blues when I was very very young and listening to this live concert figuring it would sound different but it did not it sounds exactly the same as the original and to me that is just amazing. I enjoyed your reactions to this beautiful song.

It's never complete without the poetry at the end, as on the album! "Cold-hearted orb that rules the night, Removes the colours from our sight, Red is grey and yellow white But we decide which is right And which is an illusion."

There is a longer version that includes the poem at the end. It is a very theatrical performance.

Without the coda, the song is incomplete. Now, as for my opinion of the Moody Blues, I always put their albums on when I was entertaining a young lady (I was also young at the time). The lush sound, the intelligent lyrics, helped put her in a good mood. They always appreciated the lyrics.

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing The Moodies in concert many times. Love, love, love them!

This is my nominee for the most hauntingly beautiful, moodiest (no pun intended) song from the 70s. We listened to this song in dark rooms and let the music and spirituality take us on an extended journey. Again, the Moodies prove, as does Procol Harum's Whiter Shade of Pale, that rock, symphony, and choir go together, as Sinatra intoned, like love and marriage. Simply otherwordly.

This one always takes me back to my senior prom here in Michigan, 1971. It was always a favorite, especially is was a nice looooooong 'slow song' to dance to. LOL A classic. Laugh at us 'Boomers' if you want to, but we had the best music.

Outstanding and yes they are that good live in concert. I saw them in concert 6 times in the 60's and 70s including an outdoor concert backed by the St Louis Symphony Orchestra. Easily in my top 5 concerts of all time

We went to see John Lodge in May of last year where he played the entire Days of Future Past album. An unexpected surprise was that Keith Emerson of ELP was his production manager for the show and he came out to introduce himself to the audience.

The first record I ever bought was the Moody Blues A Question of Balance. That must have been 1970 or 1971. I still remember the sun that day. There was that cobalt blue sort of cloudless sky that Australia is famous for. I remember the look of the shop, paying for it, and then the walk down main street to the car. I even remember the first listen to it at home, and then writing a letter about it to a girl, Laura, and reading her reply about a week later. She was so much more knowledgeable about music than I was. Unfortunately she would get a job on a cattle station in Western Australia a few weeks later, so I was never to see her again. She had exceptional skills with horses, so I am sure she did well, and would have been popular out there. The richness of the tapestry of life is inextricably entwined with memories of the music of the Moodies. I was 15, and it was a privilege to start my musical collection and journey with what was one of the greatest assemblages of musical talent in history. This song is right up there with Beethoven's Ode To Joy as one of the greatest of song compositions, ever.

Great reaction, you used the perfect word to describe this song, "Epic." Despite the title of one of their biggest hits, the Moody Blues are much more than just a rock band, they are masters of melody and brilliant at combining rock with classical music. Other Moody Blues songs you might enjoy are Question, The Story in Your Eyes, The Voice, Your Wildest Dreams, and of course, I'm Just a Singer In a Rock and Roll Band. Thanks for your great insights!
