He is referencing martyrs like MLK and Jesus. People who were killed because they led with love, fought without violence, and died in pursuit of equality. The one big mistake was saying King died in the "early morning, April 4". He actually was shot in the early evening and Bono does sing it correctly live in concert

As incredible as Bono's voice is the true greatness in this song can only be realized by following the lyrics. Especially the reference to the Jesus sacrifice and the Martin Luther King assassination.

Bono and The Edge always get the attention but Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton are the heartbeat in this song, that bottom end is just relentless. And credit has to be given to Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois for their production on this album. They really brought out the best in U2.

“Bad” was a legendary performance at Live Aid. Second only to Queen’s Live Aid performance.

Not only is he referencing MLK & Jesus, he’s also referencing a few others. The man caught on the barbed wire fence was a German civilian, trying to get from East Germany to West Germany, to be with his family, and was left to die, bleeding on the fence & soldiers would not help him. The man who washed up on the shore, and others. But that chilling ending about MLK gets me every time! 💜

A message about those who are willing to sacrifice themselves "in the name of love"; hence, the references to Jesus Christ & Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Most all of this great band's songs have deep messages. Thanks for your reaction.

I need to be in the mood for U2. But no doubt about it, they produced a high quality sound. They earned their acolades. "Early morning. april 4. Shot rings out, in the Memphis sky". Great line.

2 songs, Sunday Bloody Sunday, which was the song that introduced me to them. And the rooftop performance of The Streets Have No Name. Both these videos are live performances. And feel certain yall will enjoy both.

Fun fact: Chrissie Hynde (lead singer of The Pretenders) sang backup on this song.

One of my favorite U2 songs, along with 'Sunday Bloody Sunday'. IMO, War and The Joshua Tree are their best albums. Really appreciate your reactions!

“Pride” is a Tribute, to the late Martin Luther King Jr. “MLK.” The final verse of “Pride” says, Early morning, April 4 / Shot rings out in the Memphis sky / Free at last, they took your life / They could not take your pride. On April 4, 1968, King was fatally shot in Memphis, Tennessee on a motel balcony. In the song, Bono incorrectly sings early morning when the shooting actually took place at 6:01 p.m.
