Unfortunately, the flag doesn't represent the same things to everyone. To us vets, it is a physical representation of the hardships, sacrifice, and loss of being one of less than 6% of Americans to answer the call to duty. To some it represents a history of oppression, inequality or corruption, etc. Both viewpoints are equally valid. We knew going into our respective branches that we were the ones making the sacrifices so others wouldn't have to. The fact that most people are ignorant of what freedom actually costs is proof in my eyes that our sacrifices, no matter how great or small, were not made in vain.

American bodies held the Flag to show the American resolve of strength and independence. This!!! EXACTLY THIS!! I am from a HUGE military family, and served in the Navy as well. I do not have to like those that burn the flag, or kneel during the anthem....but it is one of the CORE freedoms all who served fought, bled and died to grant. There was no pile of bodies holding up the flag. And Washington never said the line about "Americans would rather die on their feet than live on their knees." Thank you for your service and I don't say that as empty lip service. I truly mean it, thank you so much. My father did 3 tours in Vietnam during the Vietnam war so I heard some very hard to imagine without being there stories, but I know he withheld most of the real nightmare fuel because I was still very young. He passed before I was an adult so I didn't fully realize the horror he had seen and dealt with or the things he had to do until much later in life. I wish I could of been more thankful to him but i just was too young to have a real understanding of that-though of course, I still don't have a real understand. You have to have gone through that yourself to truly get it and I am very grateful that I never had to face what he faced. I have the utmost respect for our veterans.

I remember back when, there was a movement going on to replace " The Star Spangled Banner " with " America the Beautiful " as the national anthem by the usual suspects. Which made me laugh, because " America the Beautiful " is just rewritten words to " God Save the King/Queen " Britain's national anthem. Back then it was being touted as a ' warmongering ' song. Because those people weren't taught what the event was that played out that led up to the writing of the poem that eventually became our Anthem.

In the last three years if they try they get fired from their jobs. So our children learn we don't have a good heritage. As far as I know, it is taught in the curriculum of most east coast states, which makes sense because it is our regional and national history. Cant speak for other regions of the nation, but that's a large portion of the US population who do learn it.
