I knew how he did it right away. he grabs Brandon's phone to scroll and stops, looks at the screen, locks the phone and hands it back upside down. he keeps telling Brandon to scroll more but the screen is locked so its still stuck on the exact spot the dude looked it. hence why he keeps saying "did it time out yet ".

Yeah the impressive part is remembering all 8-12 names that brandon could pick. His first tricks a few weeks ago were done using magnets and special paper. Probably used it again for Nick.

@@garreTTU2023 i dont think thats it. He always KNOWS. There isnt anything but misdirection and extreme memorization. Maybe a couple forces here and there. He looked at the note before ripping it up. He saw enough to write it down. The envelope being stapled is a red herring, its very easy to write through a surface. He would never risk nick choosing something he couldn't research.

He rips Nick’s paper in a way that avoids cutting it up where the name is and takes a quick look at it right before throwing it away. He takes a quick look at the top name in brandon’s contact list and then discreetly locks it before giving it back to him to “scroll” through. Brandon’s not actually scrolling through since his phone is now locked but he doesn’t know that because Oz told him to tilt it down.

He knew that Nick was not going to have a pen that's why he insisted on using a Sharpie but try to make it sound like it was completely coincidental. If you notice when a mentalist does this trick they will always use a Sharpie, after Nick hands him the envelope that is sealed The Mentalist will bend it and the security pattern on the inside of the envelope makes it so he can see the shadow of what is written on the index card. I can also tell you how they do the one where you write down a number and they pretend to have already written that number down. The trick is a magicians pencil I forgot the exact name of it but it's this ring that is skin colored and you put it on your thumb and there's a tiny tiny piece of pencil lead it's impossible to notice and there's a number of ways to be able to tell what number you wrote down, seeing the reflection Through Your Eyes, how your eyes move, the way your pencil moved, your body movement. And then they will write it down and sneak it in an envelope while they distract you with something else
