Whenever I listen to Bartok I ask myself how he could put all the patterns and musical ideas together? The Mandarin bursts of wonderful and intense musical themes and maybe Bartok should have written a 100 minute symphony with this music.

So wonderful how Bartok developed tonality into his own style(s). He used a variety of scales, chordal formations, and harsh dissonance, yet seemed to also admit tonal centers at times. This music features energetic, delicate, mysterious, dissonant, and colorfully-scored passages. I've seen the label "Primitivism" applied to the work (along with Stravinsky's "The Rite").

When I played this piece years ago with FOK orchestra Prague, my piano was just below the brass section. And I remember that the moment, here at 11:25 , it was one of the biggest noises I have EVER experienced in my life. I did not have any earplugs and to prevent becoming deaf, I had to close my right ear with my hand. Massive!

@@sneddypie right, unlike Stravinsky, Bartók was transparent about his use of various folk themes, and incorporated them smoothly and in his own unique way, unlike Stravinsky who copied various Russian and Ukrainian songs without ever tipping his hat to the sources. Every awesome tune in The Rite was copied wholesale from elsewhere. Stravinsky was clearly a genius, but no Bartók.

Captivates the frantic energy of the piece but needed more finesse with bringing out the technical demands. Most noticeable was how unusually bright the second clarinet's tone was- should've communicated with the principal and blended with each other for the lockenspiels instead of sticking out like a sore thumb.

The last section is too fast- Gardiner sacrifices so much detail as a result. There is a marvellous performance by the Berlin Phil under Mehta, which is so much more sexy and exciting by virtue of the tempo not being so extreme.
@SoaringTrumpet7 жыл бұрын
Agreed. They kept it together but he sorta sabotaged the orchestra.
@hans-detlevv.kirchbach27877 жыл бұрын
Solti - former student of Bartok - conducted it even faster.
@paulybarr7 жыл бұрын
Hans-Detlev v. Kirchbach Yes, you're right, of course. I've just compared the two performances again- I think it must be that because the Phil play the passage with a bit less bite and attack, it just sounds softer and blurred. Of course Solti conducted EVERYTHING that fast!

The part where the mandarin dies is in the full version. This concert suite version cuts after the mandarin chases the girl. This is the chase scene, which has to be played fast nevertheless

@petthemama8 жыл бұрын
+Malbrán María it's actually the prinicipal oboist (male) that screwed up, not the english horn player. in other recordings (I recommend Boulez conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra), the oboe and english horn are in unison. I just noted that not only did the oboist in this performance screw up the rhythm, but didn't play the right notes either. Just something that is very rare to occur in such a professional setting!

Bartok is like a train wreck. You just can't look away and when you're done you're sorry you watched the whole thing and somehow feel dirty. You wish you could just wipe it away but it won't leave your head. It wasn't enjoyable, it wasn't pleasant, but for whatever reason you stayed and saw the whole thing.
@dabedwards7 жыл бұрын
A very interesting comment, although I find I can tear myself away from it (unlike you), and I'm only too glad to do so. You've made me think about the fact that there is art and music that is generally acclaimed, and therefore I should respect, but which I cannot come to like, however much I might try. (Just as you may know perfectly admirable people you just don't like) For me, Bartok tops the list. I find his music technically brilliant but ultimately cold and unengaging. And often just plain ugly. My loss, I guess!
@joshuaazenberg46647 жыл бұрын
I completely disagree with both posts. In this instance, Bartok is writing for a post WW1 bustling city full of crime, struggle and in this case, prostitution. So to expect anything other than a heavy, dissonant grimy sound would have made this piece silly. Yes, it's technically brilliant but I'm completely engaged in this piece. I've performed it as well and found it really fun to play too. When you understand the time period and the events in which the composer is writing, the music tends to make more sense. Not all music requires beauty or soaring melodies. That's poor story telling.
@stephenallen11496 жыл бұрын
Of course -- music for a crime movie.
@euchamomeantonio5 жыл бұрын
i advise you to hear his romanian folk dances. it's far from being cold and unengaging :)
This comment is totally not musical: I wish the clarinetists were those brightness dressed ladies, so the seduction theme is performed with dramatic effects.
