i have to use a cane just to walk, im an old school pugilist, i have 159 amater bouts under my belt, but learning these can tactics opened a new avenue for the mechanics i learned in boxing, which were proper, now my cane is a weapon....thank you for the time in giving me a different look in using my cane

If you think about it, the first time a fighter combined strikes with grappling, wrestling and a few kicks, that fighter was using a mixed martial art. All that term means, is combining techniques from various form of combat. So, if you want to get technical, you could make the claim that the first recorded mixed martial art was practiced in ancient Egypt. Inscriptions on the temple walls at Beni Haded ( I'm probably misspelling it) depicts warriors engaging in a combatives style that include strikes, grapples and stick fighting. That would predate Pankiratian, possibly Kalaripayyitu as well. Tai Chi Chuan and Baquazhang could be considered mixed martial arts, since they combine joint locks, take downs and strikes, and I believe they were developed in the 18th century. And they were inspired by other older Chinese styles that also combined so-called "hard " and 'soft" techniques. Okinawan te combined closed hand strikes, open hand strikes, kicks, joint locks and throws. Speaking of Okinawan arts, the term Goju Ryu means "hard-soft" school. What about some forms of silat? Muay boran? So, the term could cover many different fighting styles.

The only reason bartitsu is considered one of oldest mixed martiaI art because it was the first style to blend Western (British boxing, savate, French cane fighting, and Swiss wrestling) and Eastern (jujutsu) styles.

I've started cross-training Bartitsu to keep in shape (I really miss my twenties); if nothing else, I've seen a rebound in my flexibility and reflexes from even a few months ago.

This is such an underrated and incredible martial art! It isn't the first mixed martial art though since the practice spans thousands of years ago on every continent in the world. Either way, Barton-Wright was an important figure and I'm glad his art is being revived.

This martial art has clear an obvious signs of Wing Chun among other eastern martial arts in it.

Remember that Shaolin had multiple chambers each with a specific style or system but I believe that Bartitsu is the first true mixed martial art of the west. Peace and OSU

Interesting to see some of the old school martial arts and the original attempts at combining martial arts for a better and more sufficient way of fighting. Also how they use defense against people attacking you with sticks and just using basic stuff to defend it not some weird Aikido shit. Personally I think that modern MMA and Jiu Jitsu is the refinement and perfection of techniques of martial arts combined but it’s interesting to see that people already have been trying to do this for awhile.

Sorry to disappoint any of you but the truth is that there is no first MMA style anywhere in the world. One of the earliest contenders for this title is the gladiatorial boxing styles that arose within the time of the Roman Empire, and before that with the Spartans, and before that with the Minoans. All the way back to the beginning of time. My opinion is that systematic training in the core features of martial arts began no later than with our neo-lithic hunter gatherer ancestors. I am in the process of writing a book to this effect now. My arguments will all be presented for the public at time of publication in about six or seven years. Although we think otherwise, the truth is that there is nothing new under the sun. We flatter ourselves in believing ourselves superior to our ancestors. All the best. I'm sorry, but claiming a European bastardization of various arts in the 1890's is the FIRST mixed martial arts system is simply ridiculous. Ninjitsu systems are more than a thousand years old and include striking, joint locks, throws, submissions, and weapons forms, among others.
