Who is Bas Rutten? This is the first basic puncher to achieve success in MMA. This is a guy with killer palm punches, which he used to beat off the liver of his rivals. He spent most of his career in one of my favorite promotions, Pancrase. And today I will show you the best fight finishes of this sports legend, which will prove to you again that the old school is the best school.

I've had the honor of designing for Bas in recent years. His FB cover, KZfaq channel art and his Big DVD's of Combat are all my work and I can tell you that working with him and his wife has always been a good experience. He might have a (well deserved) reputation for his fighting skills but, they're also really nice people and very easy to work with. At the top end of amateur and pro boxing, MMA, kickboxing and Muay Thai, pretty much everyone is in mint condition. What separates the champions from the rest is their capacity to make real-time, in-fight adjustments in the blink of an eye. They're problem solvers who can act and think under immense pressure - the martial arts equivalent of SF and just as dangerous.

It had alot to do with the fact that the Japanese had a different midset after being raised to revere the samurai code and then disenchanted by bushido wrestling being rigged. So they were hungry for legitimate unscripted fights. Thank goodness two Bushido wrestlers listened and started pancrase or we might have had WWF style UFC early on. Though theres argument for the UFC having now evolved more toward that direction of controlled outcomes. And dont even get me started in on the complete destruction of boxing throughi a total loss of integrity sportwide. ala Don "the self declared" King.

Here's what I see. A true professional fighter. Trained, strong, durable, and very very intelligent. More importantly though, he is composed. He allows his intellect to drive the use of his physical gifts rather than emotion. There's no rage, no loss of composure when he finds himself in a more vulnerable position. Though the emotions are obviously present, his mind controls them.

When I think of Bas, I see him as a pioneer and probably one of the first true martial artist, he came in and kicked butt, they figured him out, exploited his weakness to where he was able to actually morph his game and entered a whole new realm of MMA, the ground game. He was scary to face standing and was a monster in the clinch, and now was a monster on the ground.

Yeah, anyone that says otherwise hasn't a clue what they're talking about. He was as close to the REAL warrior that's in Bloodsport. Frank Dux, from what I understand, wasn't close to it. I would wage $1,000 on the fact that Bas would tear Frank Duxs head off. Also. In Pancrase, or Shoot Fighting is another term for it, they use palms of the hand and open slaps to the head and neck. Bas would knock people out with slaps and palm strikes. I've heard his punching to the head us just a sure KO.

Bruce Lee created Jeet Kune Do which was a combination of boxing, Muay Thai, Wing Chun, and others. The core of JKD was in Lee's words “Using no way as way; having no limitation as limitation." @@CruelWorldVids1 The difference is Bas Rutten really was a fighter and Bruce Lee was an actor. Im not downgrading Bruce Lee because he took the best things from those different martial arts to create an affective style of self defense. Most people who know something about the history of mixed martial arts know that Bad was beaten several times early in his career by people with jujitsu experience. People who could go for the neck or an arm lock or an ankle or knee continued to beat him for a while until he decided to figure out how to do it himself. Then he became so much deadlier.
