Bascom Lamar Lunsford - His Mountain Music Style

I later got the chance to go back and tell the story of where this extraordinary man came from and why he was so committed to the Appalachian Mountains, mountain music, and the brilliantly talented musicians he encouraged.

Bascom and his family were my neighbors when I grew up in South Turkey Creek. When he mentions Big Sandy, that is now known as Sandy Mush. I spent many Sunday afternoons at the Lunsford's clogging and dancing. Bascom was very old when I knew him but I'm glad I can say, even though I was a very young child, I knew Bascom and his family. All the Lunsford's were wonderful people.

My grandfather-in-law owned 100 acres of the top of Doggit Mountain just above Sandy Mush. Grandma's home place was at the very end of Sandy Mush in a big two story hand made brick house. We'd get fresh milk and eggs from Aunt Mary & Uncle Ross who never moved from the home place (I was in my early twenties and am now 66).

Thanks for explaining what he was talking about in the beginning. I had sort of an obsession with finding out what he was saying. For about a year and a half now, I thought he said "Big Send" or "Bigg's End", but could never find anywhere with those names in NC, and was at a loss, and came back to ask here, but then I saw your comment, and suddenly it all makes sense. So apparently, there was this Jim King farm in Big Sandy that Bascom visited in 1906. It is obvious he is talking about winning a competition with this song, but could that be the farm the competition was held on, or was this somewhere else? I'm Norwegian and have never been to the US, so I'm kind of an outsider to all of this, but I'm interested.

My late husband's great uncle! Rest in peace Jimmy. Died this year at 54 from ALS.

Wow! Turkey Creek in Western North Carolina. I've ridin miles and miles of trails in Turkey Pin by horseback. Raised right nearby in Arden (South Buncombe County).

I lived in NC 12 years ,stationed at Ft Bragg. never really entertained the idea of visiting the blue ridge mountains and the smokey's , what the heck was I thinking, (or not thinking) for not having gone out there. I guess I alway's felt if you didn't grow up in the culture , people were standoffish. I'm not sure I was wrong, but I wish I had grown up out there.
