Bryce Harper has been the most controversial, talented, overrated, underrated, hateable, and loveable player in baseball.
Harper has had quite the journey in Baseball this past decade and a half... He's spent his life ever since a teenager as a villain who baseball fans want to resent... but now he starts his career over as the man baseball fans love to cheer on

The prototypical Philadelphia citizen is logically hated. Anyone who bics their head when they have the ability to have hair, wears wife beaters and burns down their own city because a sports team lost should be looked down upon by society. Harper is lovable though.
@assass7012
@assass7012 9 ай бұрын
you have absolutely no fucking clue what Philly is like to such a comical degree that I think you're trolling. 1. What the fuck is the hair comment about? Makes no sense. 2. Nobody here wears wifebeaters except the guys that the high majority of us consider scumbags. Every city has those 3. We don't burn down our city when our team loses. Ever. We burn it down when we WIN, and even then, outside of one or 2 cars, a bus stop, and an awning, we haven't done any major damage. Boo

I just have a feeling that Texas would be harder for the Phillies to beat though I had the feeling the Diamondback would cause the Phillies a lot of issues and so far I’ve been wrong. Philly is a lot different now than it use to be. It’s still loud as all hell and the fans talk a ton of shit but Philly fans were at there worst when the Veterans Stadium was where the games were held. I remember as a kid seeing people get into fist fights and during a Eagles/ Cowboys game a cowboys fan started shit with an Eagles fans they got into a fight and then the Eagles fans threw the Cowboys fan off the 700 level of the Vet. It was a huge drop too then there was the booing and throwing batteries and snowballs at Santa Claus and the fans Cheering when Michael Irving got a career ending injure playing the Eagles being a Cowboys player. There was a lot of crazy stuff between Phillies and Mets fans also and Braves fans. Since the new stadiums have been built and The Vet was brought down the fans have calmed down a lot or maybe it’s cause a lot of the original Philly people moved away cause of crime or work or whatever.

Baseball needs more drama and antics. Harper was always tame compared to what is needed to make the game interesting today. Trevor Bauer was more in line with what is gonna be good for the game. Josh Donaldson also. The culture is too stiff. There's no attention paid to entertainment factors. There's all this wasted space between pitches. Stuff like that would make more interested in games that don't involve my own team.

The nl east has some crazy fans, the braves fans throw shit on the field and tommy-chop in unison when theyre good, the mets fans parachute onto the field naked when theyre good, the marlins might not have a lot of fans but the team was sued by their biggest fan because he wanted to be there every game and the price went way up. In some ways its great for baseball, in some ways its terrible for baseball, but id rather be thunderously booed by an opposing crowd than slightly clapped for.

Phillies hated Harper partially because of the media narrative and partially because we were getting beat by him. Then we got to learn more of Bryce because we saw him regularly and learned what kind of person he is. Here's the thing about Bryce Harper: Many people with his natural talent would be happy just cruising on that talent and be satisfied merely being "good" baseball players. But Harper doesn't want to do that. He wants to be the best. His "arrogance" is backed up by results. His passion boils over at times and we in Philly love him for it. Bryce was born to play in Philly, and Philly was made for Bryce.

This. X10. He's Pete Rose with power. He doesn't rest on his laurels like some other ballplayers. He's baseball's Answer to Allen Iverson, no pun intended. And that's why he will go down in history with AI and Brian Dawkins as players who most exemplify what this city looks for in its superstars. Someone please tell Embiid, because although he's a generational talent, he doesn't have 1/10th of the heart of Harper, Iverson, or Bdawk. And that's why our Sixers will never win with him

Ive always loved the guy. I believe his fire, his passion and heart for baseball is what the sport desperately needed. Baseball is/was a dying sport because unlike Hockey, Basketball and Football there was no big celebration, or "party" your team could do. If you tried things like a Touch down dance or a dunk and strike a pose you would be bood, and probably hit your next plate apperance. Baseball wanted robots (just look at Japanese baseball) look how someone like Jeter, who shows no emotion was touted and admired. No one wants to watch a dull game played by emotionless players who talk down to you "its about class." Players like harper and lot from latin countries breathed life into the game. Look at the world baseball classic. They brought passion, fire and fun back into the game.

Ironically the Nats knew what they were doing although they gave a huge offer for $300 mill for 10 years compared to the Phillies $330 mill for 13-years (less salary annually). as a phillies fan myself i cannot say enough about bryce harper. he’s just like us fans. he wants that world series win just like we do and his passion reflects it. i’ve never been more proud to have a player on my favorite team than harper. great guy and a freak at baseball.

I never understood the dislike. The only angle that kinda makes sense is the media hyped him and he didn't wanna play to the media like Magic Johnson or whatever. and when you don't cater to the media, they run you over

Harper has always been good, he got a lot hate after he signed that big contract with the Phillies, that season he hit 35 homeruns and 114 RBIs. Many people called it a bad season. An under-Appreciated player. The day he retires, people are gonna miss him.

So, as a phils fan and actual Philadelphian, the thing about harper is just how he parallels this city and came to embody it. Philadelphia is not a crap city. Its got food, culture, and a lot of great stuff. But it's defined by its perceived shortcomings. Harper was the same way. All the talent and skill, but defined by his failings in Washington. So he comes here, buys into this town and actually leans what drives this fan Base and shares it's identity. Jason kelce and Ai did the same thing (no one likes us, we don't care). He embodies the passionate, hard working, and yes, spiteful, nature that defines this city, which is one of the big reasons why CBP is as incredible as it is.

I think the comparison with Lebron is actually spot on. Lebron really was amazing in the regular season. But for whatever reason he couldn't get that initial championship for the Cavs. Then he went to Miami and played with other stars, and they won it all. I think the same will be true for Harper. Putting all that pressure on one guy to win it all in a team sport with lots of other contributors. Harper fits in to a roll as the fire starter for the team. You can tell he gives that extra juice to his teammates. And he doesn't have to be the only contributor. This phillies team is loaded. Look at this lineup, there is literally only one guy (Rosas) not hitting regularly this post season. It is fun to watch.

It’s better to be a villain in baseball. That’s how trash talking starts and it brings out more competition. Astros has to be the biggest villain team in the leauge and they carry it well. They love being the villains of the league.

He's become a living legend in Philly and for good reason. As a Phillies fan I didn't care for him much in his younger days with the Nats for no other reason than I didn't like his face..LOL. I think he's matured from those early days and he just "gets it" as he's embraced the fanbase and the fanbase in turn adores him for his grit and his ability to will his team to win. I won't lie as I would've taken South Jersey's Mike Trout over him when he signed here but as it turns out Bryce was a match made in Heaven for the Phightin's.

@jawbone78
@jawbone78 9 ай бұрын
@@chrismarston4266 I never understand what "he has matured" means with him. He's pretty much the same guy he was in 2012. I mean, he's not a teenager and has no doubt matured in his day to day life, but on the field he's pretty much exactly who he was then, just more consistent in his performance.
@chrismarston4266
@chrismarston4266 9 ай бұрын
@@jawbone78 I think a big part of it is he’s not as much of a hot head anymore, he’s learned to control it and let his play speak for him. He still has his outbursts at times but you can’t blame him for some of them. I think a big part of his maturity came from the move to Philly. Philly fans have always had the mindset of “you don’t like us, we don’t care” and I think that’s rubbed off on him, he knows people still despise him, but he’s fine with it now. Another part might be that he no longer has as much to prove. Coming into the league at 19 he had to prove himself worthy of all the hype, there was immense pressure on him to perform. Now, he can just play because he’s already won 2 MVP’s and just took his team to back to back postseasons.

I think Harper also fits better in this new era of baseball where some showboating is celebrated rather than frowned upon like it was even 5 years ago. Wasn’t it just like 5 years ago a bat flip was disrespectful?

The biggest explanation is he is just simply maturing. Most players keep the same mentality but of course as we all get older we become more aware and of course can change. Seeing harper on this run as a dodgers fan has gotten me to start rooting for a world series win

As a phils fan I never hated Harper because the Gnats were never a threat so I was indifferent to the entire team. Back then you hated the Mets team, fans, anything with a mets logo on it, dogs named “Mets”. We also hated the Braves which goes back to that 93 series.

I always thought it poetic how the Nationals won it all, the first year following his departure. And they haven’t been good since. It’s as if they were telling Harper: “look what we can do with you. Mission in life complete.” And it didn’t have to be like this if he were more like Trout or Altuve. It’s not that hard to be a great player and a nice guy.
