Baseball's first curveball was thrown underhand and inspired by seashells

In the early days of baseball, the role of the pitcher was more like that of a basketball ref at opening tip: get the action going and don't get cute. But as the sport grew and evolved, pitchers became a more strategic piece of the puzzle. And that led to the odd, long-disputed birth of one of baseball's best weapons: the first curveball.

Fredrick Goldsmith is my great great grandfather. This truly means so much to see this. My uncle John wrote a biography on him and how he had grown up with him in his later years of life. Ok so I figured this guyu was innovative to be able to throw a curveball but then he describes how he did it to the paper using essentially the same understanding we have today, that the ball follows the path of least resistance which is different than straightforward because the spin of the ball create pressure zones around the ball. It's called the magnus effect and apparently this amateur athelete was fully aware of it during the civil war

It is significant to note that none of the supposed "inventors" of the curve ball have any documentation of quibbling amongst themselves over who was "first." Only the beta spectator/commentators resorted to argument and dispute. If you have a good curve, you only care about another pitcher's curve when you are at bat (and you can see it in his wrist better than the fielders).
